Please consider that journalists, politicians, activists, governments and maybe most media creators want to maximize their reach, even if you do not want to use social media in that way. And a lot of them would like that to be organic, once they recognize the Faustian bargain of corporate algos etc.
Also how many of your family members would not be welcome to honestly express their political and cultural opinions here?

Everybody would switch to fedi if they knew everybody else would too. The value of having full control of your social media reach forever is obviously worth the cost of figuring it out once and paying the hosting costs.
