"On some level, I believe the question how can others make their own is a lot better. In her lectures, Jacobs points to federalism as a potential solution – at least when it comes to governments. But could equally apply to other forms of organizations.
We do not need to create large structures that just run the risk of becoming yet another single-point-of-failure and at the same time require approaches to decenter community. We do not need another centralized Twitter but in open source that fails at moderation as a result. We do not need the GitHub replacement with all its problems, even if, like Codeberg, it would be democratically governed by a member-run organisation. Just like we do not need an alternative AWS US-East-1 that takes down the whole internet when it goes down.
Instead, what we might want is many, ‘reasonably’-sized alternatives that can interact, exchange and cross-communicate. Jacobs did not think about ‘federation’ on a technical protocol level, but I think the Fediverse – with all its problems – shows that there is a real opportunity. And the folks working on making federated code forges work might just pull the same thing off for that domain.
This is all not to say that there never can be situations where ‘scaling up’ isn’t possible or maybe even the right call. But, instead of making how do we scale the knee-jerk reaction, we need to start earlier."

quite some other projects try to solve "offline communications" by using Bluetooth but I think this is very unpractical for anything that is not looking like an IRC or SMS app
but if people setup local interconnected wifi hotspots and build a mesh network in the cities/towns then you can have a something much more interesting while not draining everyone's battery
enabling people to do things like this and becoming truly resilient and autonomous
things like this you can never do with centralized messengers like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Signal, etc. if you really care about digital independence, centralized alternatives are just NOT an option at all

“These declines indicate that even though Bluesky’s app continues to add registered accounts, fewer people are using its mobile app on a regular basis. It also suggests that some of those who joined Bluesky due to their dissatisfaction with X post-elections haven’t stuck around long-term.
But the bigger takeaway here is not just that Bluesky’s post-election bump has shrunk. Bluesky’s app has lost more than half its monthly active users from its late-2024 high, which means that its app usage continued to shrink even after the initial post-election surge subsided. (Its quarterly average was around 22.1 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2024, Similarweb’s data indicates, and it declined to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026. That’s a decline of around 52%.)”

I was really happy to see @benpate and @dansup exploring similar ideas at the last FediCon: reducing user friction and making onboarding to the Fediverse almost invisible.
I’ve been working along the same lines. Here’s a small example: a user can interact with a #BadgeFed instance by simply logging in with #LinkedIn or #GitHub.
They can comment, upload images, like, boost, etc. They don’t need to know what the Fediverse is, what an instance is, or what software is running underneath.
For them, it’s just a social app.
Of course, existing Fediverse users can still connect with their Mastodon account or use their preferred Fediverse software.
Under the hood, it’s a #GoToSocial account configured with LinkedIn/GitHub OIDC OAuth.
But to the user? Completely transparent.
I think this kind of invisible complexity is one of the ways we can make the Fediverse much more approachable without sacrificing interoperability.
