I wanted to "reach out" to the author of the article.

Free idea:
A Fediverse/Social Web front-end for YouTube. Kill the algorithm and the front page. You make an account on an instance, and that server handles delivering videos for you to click on.
They *could* do this in any way they want, but let's be honest, the best way to do it would be via community sharing. You can "boost" videos, and then all your followers can see those videos. You just follow people who tend to like the same kinds of videos as you. You can also directly follow the people you're subscribed to (like, the YouTube channel, not a Fediverse account), and get a consistent feed of all their uploads.
The people running it wouldn't need to handle hosting video content. They just cache metadata, and it should theoretically be quite similar to running a Mastodon instance. You don't even need to have a video player, you can just have a link that sends you to the official YouTube site.
Does this already exist? Last I heard, YouTube has pretty good support still for their APIs that let people do this kind of stuff.

It’s amazing that we have such a mature tool when it comes to rich text #interoperability. It’s easy to forget or underestimate the impact tools like Pandoc have in writing, knowledge work and science in general. This impact is often hidden in the polished artifacts and end user applications capturing all the value in our twisted economy.

In theory you can do anything you want, and in practice people do that too. As long as you don't break anything that #ActivityPub specs prescribe, the #ActivityStreams vocabulary is just a 'toolbox' of #SocialWeb primitives you can use as building blocks in your solution. The only issue arises if you want your mechanism to have #interoperability with other #fediverse solutions. They should either ignore, or understand it, and not break. Writing a #FEP is the best-practice way to walking the path of adoption of your approach.

Armstrong(?) does not seem to have an understanding of how the tech industry works.
Interoperability will most definitely decrease rather than increase. For example code generated by one will not work with another. If it works today, it will fail spectacularly tomorrow ☢️

It's becoming increasingly obvious to me lately that if we want people to actually wake up and realize that corporate social media apps are not good for them, and to come over to the Open Social Web (fedi) instead, some of us are going to need to actually spread our ideas on those corporate platforms.
There needs to a whole community of people on Instagram and TikTok and YouTube and whatever the hell else constantly talking about how you can get away from those platforms and join the better side of the internet.
If we want people to do something, we need to meet them where they're at, use the language that they understand. Speak their cultural register to explain the alternatives.
And this doesn't just apply to fedi either. If we wanna talk about the fact that adversarial interoperability is illegal, we're gonna need to find some words for that which can be understood by non-tech people, because "interoperability" isn't exactly an easy term to work with if you're a journalist or an accountant or literally anything except for a tech person.
To fight enshittification, we're gonna have to get a lot better at talking about it with normal people. The revolution of the nerds isn't going to happen, we aren't large enough to make change on our own. We need to get the regular people to help us.

"Europe wasted no time using its landmark Digital Markets Act (DMA) to try to rein in Big Tech. Companies like Apple, Meta, and Google have faced steep fines and orders to modify their business practices since the law came into force in 2024. And the hits keep on coming for Big Tech in Europe. After several months of consideration, the European Commission has announced new DMA measures that will force Google to support interoperability and competition in the European Union, and Google is not happy about it.
The new “specification measures” cover two elements of Google’s business: Android phones and search. Both changes could theoretically increase competition and give users more choices, but Google claims they will undermine privacy and security. But as a “gatekeeper” under the DMA, Google has no choice but to comply. As the European Commission points out in its announcement, these decisions are legally binding.
On Android, Google will have to open up access to competing AI platforms. Currently, Google’s Gemini gets preferential access to the system. Gemini is preloaded on all Google-certified Android phones and can wake up in response to the “Hey Google” hot word. Google’s AI also includes system and app automation features, screen content access, and more.
“Third-party AI assistants are therefore limited in how they can offer their innovative services, making them less attractive to 60% of EU users who have an Android device,” the Commission said in its press release."

"This is a clear and substantive win for developers and users in Europe. The stranglehold Apple exerts over its ‘walled garden’ is injurious for developers, users, and researchers alike. By confirming Apple’s obligations under the DMA, the General Court has ensured that developers will be given more choice on where they can publish their apps, and users will have more options to obtain apps which, for whatever reason, Apple dislikes. And researchers will have less roadblocks and hurdles to overcome in their studies of Apple’s OSes, particularly iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.
Apple argues that the interoperability requirements will force it to lower the security standards that have led Apple products’ users to trust their devices. While this self-serving logic is not entirely without merit, it is far from the inevitable outcome. Especially with regards to the App Store, users can be given clear, informed choice when leaving the Apple ecosystem to obtain apps elsewhere. While we urge European courts to take Apple’s security concerns seriously, we’ve previously noted that this should not be used as a smokescreen to protect anticompetitive behavior.
Interoperability and security are not inherently at odds. When interoperable functionality is worked into the security model of a platform from the ground-up, a proper balance can be struck between two forces that are often falsely framed as naturally conflicting. While Apple OS platforms have not been built this way from the get-go, it is still possible, but takes more time to get it right. Here, the devil is in the implementation details."
