Getting a FastAPI api up and sending a received webhook to my Delta chat contact was an… experience.

Most annoying part was initializing the chat from my phone first and having an event loop solely to fetch messages so the E2E encryption happens properly.

Some of it might have been unnecessary, but there was so much trail an error involved… thread executor pool spun up in the FastAPI lifecycle… I wouldn’t call the result production ready :D

Ein paar Augenblicke, um den freien und dezentralen Messenger #DeltaChat in Betrieb zu nehmen. Im Beispiel mit einem neuen Profil unter Nutzung eines vorhandenen Chatmail-Relays.

➡️ Schritt 1: Download & Installation

Unter https://delta.chat/de/download finden sich Download-Optionen für verschiedene Plattformen: GNU/Linux, Android, iOS, macOS, Windows und auch Ubuntu Touch. Wer unter Android das freie Repository F-Droid bevorzugt, wird fündig. In dubiosen proprietären App-Stores ist #DeltaChat notfalls auch vertreten. Herunterladen und installieren wie gewohnt.

➡️ Schritt 2: Inbetriebnahme, Profil einrichten

Bei einer frischen Installation ohne Profil wird #DeltaChat direkt fragen, ob man ein neues Profil erstellen oder ein vorhandenes einrichten will. Wähle in diesem Beispiel "Neues Profil erstellen". Nun kannst Du einen Namen festlegen, unter dem Dich Deine Kontakte kennen (oder kennen lernen), auch ein Profilbild. Dieser Name muß nicht eindeutig sein und läßt sich jederzeit ändern. Wenn Du das voreingestellte Chatmail-Relay nine.testrun.org nutzen willst, bist Du nach einem Klick auf "Profil erstellen" schon fertig.

➡️ Schritt 3: Kontakte einrichten

Da #DeltaChat ein dezentraler und anonym zu nutzender Messenger ist, existieren zwangsläufig keine zentralen oder sonstwie öffentlichen Verzeichnisse von anderen Nutzenden. Privatsphäre und so.

Wenn man sich gerade direkt in die Augen schaut, können sich diese Menschen via Anzeige eines QR-Codes und Scannen desselbigen verknüpfen. Okay, den technischen Part sollten die Geräte übernehmen. Easy.

In anderem Fall kann man sich über den Austausch eines Links verknüpfen.

Dann kann es auch schon losgehen mit der Chatterei.

ℹ️ Und nun noch ein wenig mehr Informationen. Hintergrund und so.

▪️ Chatmail-Relays sind spezialisierte Mailserver, die die Zwischenspeicherung von Nachrichten übernehmen, wenn ein Gerät gerade offline ist. Diese Relays werden gern durch Spenden finanziert. Man kann auch ein eigenes Relay aufsetzen oder eine IMAP-Box für diesen Zweck verwenden.

nine.testrun.org ist die Vorgabe für viele Chatmail-Applikationen.

In Deutschland gehostet ist z.B. chat.adminforge.de.

Auf diesen Chatmail-Relays erhält ein Profil eine interne E-Mail-Adresse und es wird etwas Speicherplatz vorgehalten für die erwähnte Zwischenspeicherung von Nachrichten (im Beispiel nine.testrun.org 700 MiB, chat.adminforge.de 500 MiB).

Man kann auch mehr als Relay mit einem Profil verbinden. Nachrichten werden dann auf allen Relays empfangen. Zum Senden wählt man ein aktives Relay aus.

▪️ Die eigentliche Speicherung Deiner Nachrichten passiert auf Deinem Endgerät. Hin und wieder eine Sicherung durchführen, empfiehlt sich daher nicht nur hier.

▪️ Zweitgeräte hinzufügen geht direkt aus der Erstinstallation. Beide Geräte müssen sich im selben Netzwerk aufhalten (also z.B. im heimischen WLAN). Auf dem neuen Gerät wird dann kein neues Profil erzeugt, sondern das vorhandene Profil über "Zweitgerät hinzufügen" verknüpft. Das erste Gerät zeigt hierzu einen QR-Code an, den das zweite Gerät scannt. Im Anschluß synchronisieren sich die beiden. Danach sind beide Installationen gleichwertig und unabhängig voneinander. Wenn ein QR-Code-Scannen nicht möglich ist, kann man einen Code in die Zwischenablage kopieren. Praxistipp: Richte #DeltaChat erst am PC ein und scanne dann vom Smartphone. Wird meist einfacher sein.

▪️ Weitere Profile kann man nach Bedarf einfach in #DeltaChat hinzufügen.

▪️ Grundsätzlich schadet es nie, durch die Einstellungen zu gehen und für die eigenen Vorlieben anzupassen.

Übrigens, man kann den Kontakten auf dem eigenen Gerät einen eigenen Namen vergeben, wenn man will.

Viel Spaß mit einem dezentralen Messenger aus Europa, der übrigens als "Open Source" entwickelt wird.

Delta Chat wurde Ende 2016 von Björn Petersen ins Leben gerufen. Die erste öffentliche Version erschien im Februar 2017. Anno 2026 wird die offizielle Website verantwortet von der merlinux GmbH aus Freiburg (BRD).

➡️ Dezentral
Keine Zentrale, die alle Daten vorhält und einen "Single Point of Failure" darstellt. Betrieb mit eigener IMAP-Box oder unter Nutzung eines (oder mehrerer) Chatmail-Relays.

➡️ Verschlüsselt
Nachrichten sind Ende-zu-Ende-verschlüsselt - nur bei Nutzung einer eigenen IMAP-Box kann bei Bedarf auf unverschlüsselten E-Mail-Versand umgestellt werden. Chatmail-Relays erzwingen Verschlüsselung.

➡️ Anonym nutzbar
Bei der Anlage eines Profils sind keinerlei Daten notwendig: Keine E-Mail-Adresse, keine Telefonnummer, nicht einmal ein eindeutiger Nutzername. Zudem kann der gewählte Nutzername jederzeit geändert werden. Eine SIM-Karte ist natürlich ebensowenig notwendig.

➡️ Mehrere Geräte, mehrere Profile
Delta Chat kann parallel auf mehrere Geräte installiert werden, die anschließend unabhängig voneinander zu nutzen sind. Dies inkludiert Smartphones wie auch PCs. Auch sind mehrere Profile möglich - in der gleichen Installation.

Neben dem Austausch von Text- und Sprachnachrichten, Bildern, Videos und Dateianhängen ist Telefonie möglich, sowohl Audio als auch Video. Es existieren Gruppen und Kanäle. Funktionalität kann über passende Apps erweitert werden.

@fexplorer @delta @nic @indiscale ist mir auch nicht bekannt, man kann bei #DeltaChat doch immer noch "klassische E-Mail als Relay" einstellen. Ein paar Funktionen fehlen dann zwar aber das ist nichts nennenswertes. Bei #ArcaneChat wurde die E-Mail meines wissens nach entfernt.

quite some other projects try to solve "offline communications" by using Bluetooth but I think this is very unpractical for anything that is not looking like an IRC or SMS app

but if people setup local interconnected wifi hotspots and build a mesh network in the cities/towns then you can have a something much more interesting while not draining everyone's battery

enabling people to do things like this and becoming truly resilient and autonomous

things like this you can never do with centralized messengers like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Signal, etc. if you really care about digital independence, centralized alternatives are just NOT an option at all

No. I'm just a 'punter' like most folk on here.

But an important use case for Delta Chat is it can be installed as a Persistent application on TAILS OS and functions perfectly over the TOR network.

This is NOT possible with phone network based services nor those who run their own networks, such as Session.

This is because DC is effectively just an email client and uses the Data part of the Internet 'spectrum' rather than the Telephone part(in really, really simple terms).

Delta Chat haven't "reinvented the wheel", they've just modified its performance characteristics.

Try as they may, its quite difficult for authorities to shutdown the global email system without shooting themselves in the foot. It makes DC very resilient.

To my knowledge this is the only, truly user friendly, secure messaging app that can be used over TOR.

(Having said that, I am aware of others, such as XMPP, etc. that can be used, but DC is by far the easiest and most flexible of those I am aware of.)

And, Session is improving all the time. Any bad press it gets for the use of a cryptocurrency to fund it just shows a lack of education on behalf of the writer. I'm happy to expand on this point if required.

However, Session has two problems atm, one is a lack of a post-transmission Edit function and the other is extremely low uptake, IMHO.

But as a secure messaging service, its First Rate, for my needs.

Relax 😎! GPG is not OpenPGP!

Yesterday, vulnerabilities were published https://gpg.fail but they don't affect #deltachat or other #chatmail clients because

A) We never used #gnupg for anything; we use the modern #rustlang #openpgp implementation @rpgp, security audited multiple times.

B) #openpgp is fine, as modernized in #RFC9580, which already warns against several #gpgfail issues (gpg didn't implement that spec)

#DeltaChat has no forward secrecy.
And depended on SHA-1 and using MD5.
Both are considered weak cryptography if I'm not mistaken.
While I believe deltachat to be a great app with good use case, it's not what I'm looking for.

#xmpp ecosystem is?/was! pretty bad in serving proper e2ee cross platform implementation.
Till recently there was only conversations as a usable app. Since some weeks ago it seems that @dino now also offers e2ee by default. But also both conversations and Dino using an outdated omemo specification, and are by that not compatible with @kaidan.
I will reconsider xmpp when they adapt the newer specification.

@briar not mentioned, but also no, cause it's not working on #TailsOS or on android with Orbot.
So very much unusable, since it's not running on the platforms we use.

@lns Should but they never will, with good reason. They don't really need to, for email encryption at least there's #DeltaChat that non-technical people have a better chance of learning. Yes, it only uses a subset of #PGP called #Autocrypt, but if you really want to use PGP, there are much better tools than #GPG like: #Thunderbird, #Mailvelope and #Kleopatra. I know some of these are front-ends for GPG.

Hatte schon vor Jahren von @delta gehört, aber durch die Session auf dem #38C3 habe ich es jetzt auch mal ausprobiert. Coole Sache!

Dass man die #Telefonnummer bei #Signal verbergen kann, ist wichtig. Trotzdem müssen wir weiterhin darauf vertrauen, dass die Nummer in den Händen von Signal und deren Dienstleistern sicher bleibt. Wenn #Anonymität das wichtigste Kriterium ist, empfehle ich aber weiterhin einen #Messenger/Dienst zu nutzen, der die Telefonnummer gar nicht erst erhebt, z.B. #Threema, #DeltaChat, #XMPP / #Conversations oder #Matrix. #SimpleX entwickelt sich ebenso gut.
