If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.

Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

@poes @nawanp ada kok buat host sendiri #deltachat: #chatmail. Tapi gak usah chatmail pakai SMTP dan IMAP biasa juga bisa kok. Dah pernah coba. Paling "agak boros" batere kalo IMAP nya gak support IMAP IDLE. Dan create user nya gak bisa dari aplikasi deltachat.

Sebenernya masalah quota di nine.testrun.org atau host lainnya itu cuma bakal ngaruh buat offline message. Deltachat pakai email itu cuma buat relay kalo pas offline dan kalo gak salah bantu discovery. Begitu online dan kesedot, selanjutnya antar deltachat baik dengan akun lain ataupun akun sendiri kalo multiple device dia p2p pake #iroh.

Tapi kalo mau agak gede quota nya, pake relaynya dari #arcanechat, dapat 2GB

Похоже, что вчера в @rf заблокировали все публичные серверы #Chatmail для #DeltaChat. Я создала два теста для OONI Probe, чтобы вы могли проверить блокировки у себя.

1. Тест Chatmail: https://run.ooni.org/ru/v2/10312. У меня заблокированы все 25 из 25.

2. Тест #Matrix: https://run.ooni.org/ru/v2/10311. Были сообщения, что серверы Matrix тоже переблокировали, но у меня на домашнем интернете недоступны только 2 из 49. Имеет смысл запускать тест регулярно, чтобы было больше данных.

"Popularity is overrated" is an often occuring phrase in our circles. Which is of course nonsense because only what is popular, counts, right? Only what everybody else does is a valid choice, right? #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc are used in private places and communities that people are molding for themselves. We are just providing tools and approaches that work ... At least most of the time 😅 "Nothing works all the time" is another project mantra. Brb preparing the next releases :)

@rakoo no, user numbers are getting.increasingly unknown even to us. We tried to express this. That more people are joining the fun and contributing in various ways, is what we experience and appreciate. All three key efforts,#chatmail #deltachat and #webxdc are community efforts.

The last two weeks saw a dev gathering in the black forest from several in #chatmail, #deltachat and #webxdc communiities, also joined by @n0iroh and @rpgp folks. The tech demos and hacking results we presented to each other, were pretty mind blowing and tracing a path to very interesting futures, delivered in working code, not just some grand plan. Let us just say for now that we are getting to the fun parts of an age old http://testrun.org motto :) happy #equinox! May the tides turn!

Fun funding fact: If we had 10 times more money to develop #deltachat , the #chatmail relay network and the #webxdc secure mini app ecosystem, we would still have ten times less than what signal has (let alone Whatsapp or telegram). But we don't want to increase nudging people for donations, as we have many users who don't even have a legal way to send us money, let alone the means. It is a special kind of reward that delta works where most if not all other messengers fail to work for users.

We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:

- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china

- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays

- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk

It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.

It nicely masks the IP address to the #ChatMail server while still allowing voice and video calls between users.

#Chatmail clients typically use the Rust core library which provides all networking, cryptography, persistence, real-time networking, mail relay/server interop. Documentation to help with writing clients is scattered, but at least there are plenty examples to learn from.

What if all public funding and all private donations to our efforts stop tomorrow?

Users should be fine for years thanks to the wonderful world-wide community of #chatmail relay operators 💜 Relays are dirt cheap to run. Also, our developments are much cheaper and less complex compared to what we know from comparable efforts.

No worries though!

We currently have moneys to help sustain ~15 contributors, with a sum similar to what other projects pay for their foundation president/CEO alone :)

and even if the Delta Chat project died today, you would be able to keep using your #chatmail relay servers (or even just classic email servers) while when #Session goes down it seems the app will pretty much stop working properly, that doesn't sounds really decentralized

Any personal recommendations for a #ChatMail server? I'm excited to try @delta as they prepare to compliment #PostQuantumEncryption and #PerfectForwardSecrecy. Yes, I'm familiar with the list on their site, but I'd like to hear recommendations from users.

I'd prefer a server in #Germany that is geared towards English speakers and run by a nonprofit or collective but would love to hear all experiences.

Under the hood, we are using IETF Internet Messaging specifications commonly tagged as "email". Sounds old, right? Actually there is a lot of new stuff going on! For example, #chatmail apps now fully support:

- RFC9788 ("Header Protection") to achieve minimal metadata

- RFC9580 ("OpenPGP") to use modern cryptography

By comparison, "Messaging Layer Security (MLS)" has an older numbered RFC9420 (and doesn't have mass-usable app releases).

Maybe time to revisit old/new assumptions? :)

Ich bin gerade auf Delta Chat gestoßen. Ein Chat, der einfach über das E-Mail-Protokoll funktioniert. Das ist superclever. E-Mail gibt es überall und man kann sie nicht einfach abschalten.

Ich hatte z.B. sofort mit der kubanischen und iranischen Community zu tun. Das ist nicht die Opposition dort, sondern Leute, die chatten wollen, ohne dass der große Bruder in den USA mitliest.

Aber auch für Familien ist das gut. Wenn du ein Kind hast, aber das nicht in die kranke Welt von WhatsApp und Telegram schicken willst. Bei Delta Chat kann man nicht angeschrieben werden oder in Gruppen eingeladen. Du musst die Person wirklich getroffen haben. (Es sei denn, du machst es wie ich und veröffentlichst deine Kontakte. Das ist ja nur zu Testzwecken.)

@sebsauvage @titaniumbiscuit not all classic e-mail providers work equally well but many do. Since #chatmail entered the global e-mail server network 14 months ago, and we introduced instant-onboarding april 2024, we de-emphasize #gmail #outlook and #iCloud and don't perform "free" work to help them continue to dominate. Instead we put our energy into growing the chatmail server network which does away with spam/rate-limit problems by design. Everything is based on #interoperable #cryptography .

#deltachat is a minority messenger today and that's just fine for now. Changes often come from the precarious fringe which has to make ends meet, under hostile circumstances. Our approaches are aiming to provide working software that does its damn job. No unable to decrypt, no going for VC/Blockchain money, no bending the knee and no endorsing of corporate platforms. The #chatmail server network implements #interoperable #cryptography , does away with shady spam lists, catering for #Gmail etc

No coins, no chains, no big machinery but plain, efficient and scalable decentralization, leveraging the largest open internet messaging network ever created by humans ... made safe, fast and resource efficient with #chatmail servers using strong and audited #interoperable #cryptography. It just works (tm) in many places where Signal and WhatsApp fail today. It's time to reclaim "decentralization" from techbros, insist on real-life #resilience and trust this cute figure from @Xeniax :)

Of course, that doesn't mean they automatically get to influence the project direction and compromise its values. However, as far as self-hosting on minimal/budget systems goes, #chatmail wins.

Also, SimpleX plans to integrate #cryptocurrency (like #SessionMessenger did) in the future so that will add more complexity.

Que se cuide de que empiecen a spamear a los usuarios españoles que le puede salir el tiro por la culata, ya que puedo estar de acuerdo con cosas dichas en su mensaje, pero si empieza a haber Spam la gente puede huir en masa, aunque sea de vuelta a Whatsapp.
