Good news among the bad news!

If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.

Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

@poes @nawanp ada kok buat host sendiri #deltachat: #chatmail. Tapi gak usah chatmail pakai SMTP dan IMAP biasa juga bisa kok. Dah pernah coba. Paling "agak boros" batere kalo IMAP nya gak support IMAP IDLE. Dan create user nya gak bisa dari aplikasi deltachat.

Sebenernya masalah quota di nine.testrun.org atau host lainnya itu cuma bakal ngaruh buat offline message. Deltachat pakai email itu cuma buat relay kalo pas offline dan kalo gak salah bantu discovery. Begitu online dan kesedot, selanjutnya antar deltachat baik dengan akun lain ataupun akun sendiri kalo multiple device dia p2p pake #iroh.

Tapi kalo mau agak gede quota nya, pake relaynya dari #arcanechat, dapat 2GB

We don't think any institution or state has the right to prevent families and friends from private chatting, physically or digitally. But the Cyber Authority China (CaC) seems to take offense:

- they made Apple remove #deltachat iOS for mainland china

- their great firewall appears to block some #chatmail relays

- if you ask DeepSeek directly about Delta Chat, it doesn't want to talk

It's pretty sad, really. Everybody on this planet needs, and has a human right to private communication.

"Popularity is overrated" is an often occuring phrase in our circles. Which is of course nonsense because only what is popular, counts, right? Only what everybody else does is a valid choice, right? #deltachat #chatmail and #webxdc are used in private places and communities that people are molding for themselves. We are just providing tools and approaches that work ... At least most of the time 😅 "Nothing works all the time" is another project mantra. Brb preparing the next releases :)

@rakoo no, user numbers are getting.increasingly unknown even to us. We tried to express this. That more people are joining the fun and contributing in various ways, is what we experience and appreciate. All three key efforts,#chatmail #deltachat and #webxdc are community efforts.

Похоже, что вчера в @rf заблокировали все публичные серверы #Chatmail для #DeltaChat. Я создала два теста для OONI Probe, чтобы вы могли проверить блокировки у себя.

1. Тест Chatmail: https://run.ooni.org/ru/v2/10312. У меня заблокированы все 25 из 25.

2. Тест #Matrix: https://run.ooni.org/ru/v2/10311. Были сообщения, что серверы Matrix тоже переблокировали, но у меня на домашнем интернете недоступны только 2 из 49. Имеет смысл запускать тест регулярно, чтобы было больше данных.

The last two weeks saw a dev gathering in the black forest from several in #chatmail, #deltachat and #webxdc communiities, also joined by @n0iroh and @rpgp folks. The tech demos and hacking results we presented to each other, were pretty mind blowing and tracing a path to very interesting futures, delivered in working code, not just some grand plan. Let us just say for now that we are getting to the fun parts of an age old http://testrun.org motto :) happy #equinox! May the tides turn!

Fun funding fact: If we had 10 times more money to develop #deltachat , the #chatmail relay network and the #webxdc secure mini app ecosystem, we would still have ten times less than what signal has (let alone Whatsapp or telegram). But we don't want to increase nudging people for donations, as we have many users who don't even have a legal way to send us money, let alone the means. It is a special kind of reward that delta works where most if not all other messengers fail to work for users.

I just tested the #orbot #socks5 #proxy in #deltachat / @delta

It nicely masks the IP address to the #ChatMail server while still allowing voice and video calls between users.
