  1. Thinking Machines Lab announced research preview of "interaction models", which was trained from-scratch for real-time multimodal collaboration, 200ms micro-turns, audio+video+text+tools concurrent. Their bet: today's chat UX fits "answering inference", not collaboration, so capable AI defaults to autonomous use and looks like labor substitution. Could we change the debate by changing the UI/UX?

  2. Would you trust AI to make decisions without human oversight?

Our poll says most people would not. They want safeguards or human review in the loop.

People like AI for speed. Trust drops when accountability gets unclear.

So where should humans always stay in control?

  3. "Each prior “intelligence explosion” was not an upgrade to individual cognitive hardware, but the emergence of a new, socially aggregated unit of cognition. Primate intelligence scaled with social group size, not habitat difficulty. Human language created what Michael Tomasello calls the “cultural ratchet”: knowledge accumulating across generations without any individual requirement to reconstruct the whole. Writing, law, and bureaucracy externalized social intelligence into infrastructure, institutions that coordinate across longer time horizons than any participant within them. A Sumerian scribe running a grain accounting system did not comprehend its macroeconomic function; the system was functionally more intelligent than he was.

AI extends this sequence. Large language models are trained on the accumulated output of human social cognition—the cultural ratchet made computationally active, every parameter a compressed residue of communicative exchange. What migrates into silicon is not abstract reasoning but social intelligence in externalized form, encountering itself on a new substrate.

If intelligence is inherently social, then the path to more powerful AI runs not through building a single colossal oracle but through composing richer social systems—and these systems will be hybrid. We have entered the era of human-AI centaurs: composite actors that are neither purely human nor purely machine. Centaur actors can take many forms and inhabit many different roles. Each one of us may move in and out of diverse ensembles many times a day: one human directing many AI agents; one AI serving many humans; many humans and many AIs collaborating in shifting configurations."

  4. AI shopping agents are now required to prove a human approved each purchase. Altman’s startup will embed prompts or biometric checks that tie the final checkout to an actual user, creating a verifiable audit trail and cutting unauthorized chargebacks. The challenge is keeping the step fast enough to preserve the seamless experience while satisfying regulators. #AICommerce #HumanInTheLoop #TrustTech 🤖 - Powered by FG

  6. Exactly my thoughts!

"We’re at the same point with automation right now as autonomous cars. Autonomous driving is only possible on well-traveled, predictable roads with little variation or surprise, on routes that have been mapped and re-mapped, test-driven and re-driven, and constantly monitored. In the tech writer role, there are some repeatable tasks that are like well-traveled roads (for example, a weekly report), but more often, we tech writers find ourselves going down many new roads each day, each with their own unexpected twists, turns, and bumps. That unpredictability makes automation difficult, requiring frequent human steering and input to avoid crashing.

Until more tech workers have automated complex processes end-to-end, I’d like for the industry to more readily acknowledge a different model that better describes reality: the cyborg model. This cyborg metaphor comes from a research paper called The Jagged Edge, which I referenced in my book review of Co-Intelligence and explained in my post Why attitudes and experiences differ so much with regards to AI among technical writers. In short, the cyborg model is humans + AI working together. The machine augments, rather than replaces, the human, and vice versa. This cyborg model describes nearly every tech writer who uses AI: there’s a frequent back-and-forth collaboration to produce content.

This frequent back-and-forth collaboration is exactly the message I want to share with students and faculty: humans aren’t being replaced (at least not yet)."

  7. The most important question in AI is no longer what machines can do, but where humans remain accountable.
Control is not a constraint on progress. It is what makes progress durable.

  8. A genuine question for policymakers, leaders, and practitioners:
If AI removes the reason many clerical and rule-based jobs existed—not just the tasks—what replaces employment as a source of stability and dignity?

Hartmut Rosa, Situation and Constellation, On the Disappearance of Human Agency
"Particularly in our professional lives – but increasingly also in our leisure time – our decision-making is prescribed in advance by guidelines and forms, algorithms and apps, right down to the smallest of details. The role of situational, sensitive consideration and judgment is being replaced by the constellation-based machine logic of execution, which we wield on a daily basis. »Agree«/»Reject« – this is how agents of action turn into executors of actions."

"...When spheres of discretion and judgment disappear and the creativity of human agency is eliminated from everyday practices of execution, we feel an increased sense of powerlessness. And as our power of judgment dwindles, so does our energy to act."

  17. "The human in the loop is a false promise, a "salve that enables governments to obtain the benefits of algorithms without incurring the associated harms."

So why are we still talking about how AI is going to replace government and corporate bureaucracies, making decisions at machine speed, overseen by humans in the loop?

Well, what if the accountability sink is a feature and not a bug. What if governments, under enormous pressure to cut costs, figure out how to also cut corners, at the expense of people with very little social capital, and blame it all on human operators? The operators become, in the phrase of Madeleine Clare Elish, "moral crumple zones":"

  18. Great must-read blog about the human-in-the-loop promise that governments make.
"The emphasis on human oversight as a protective mechanism allows governments and vendors to have it both ways: they can promote an algorithm by proclaiming how its capabilities exceed those of humans, while simultaneously defending the algorithm and those responsible for it from scrutiny by pointing to the security (supposedly) provided by human oversight."

    robohub.org/a-faster-way-to-te

#AI components are pre-trained and need few examples to adapt - this is pretty common. But this stands out: when a task fails, the #robot is capable of giving counterfactuals (if X did not happen, you have been able to do Y).
It tells the user what it needs to learn.

The user is then supposedly able to give a well-targeted teaching.
