The day started with an inspiring keynote by Julia Pedak, followed by a diverse program of HCI sessions, workshops, meetings, and UP Bar Camp sessions.

Workshops and community sessions created plenty of space for discussion, collaboration, and new perspectives.

The day concluded with the Conference Dinner, including the Award Ceremony!

  3. @JamesWidman @iris_meredith super point!

I think that some #HCI courses treat the notion of #instruments and this gets somewhat close (but with different names and different consequences).

A whole course could be a bit big but a part of an #ethics course would be very sensible or?

  4. I am studying trust calibration for a CHI 2027 submission and I find this area crucial for making interactions more reliable and understandable. Trust grows when systems explain themselves and users can calibrate expectations, which feels essential for clearer humanโ€“computer interactions.

  5. Something caught my attention of what Brad Myers wrote in this 1998 paper on the history of human-computer interaction technologies:

Alan Kay proposed the idea of overlapping windows in his 1969 doctoral thesis, and overlapping windows first appeared in 1974 in his Smalltalk system at Xerox PARC, and soon afterward in the InterLisp system.

    dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/274430.

    dl.acm.org/doi/epdf/10.1145/27

So, after Smalltalk, Interlisp was the second system with overlapping windows. The Interlisp environment Myers refers to is not Interlisp-D though but the one described here:

  6. I have been thinking about the pressure researchers feel as deadlines approach and the ongoing challenges in human computer interaction. It makes me value steady progress and clear communication in the research process. #HCI #research #CHi2027

  7. If one of you nerds in northern Germany or maybe southern Denmark wants a HUGE touchscreen for 300 bucks, there's a working Samsung SUR40 (aka Microsoft Pixelsense) for sale in Lower Saxony: ebay.de/itm/158218959099

Hit me up if you want to install Linux, I wrote the kernel driver for the touchscreen together with @mkalten ๐Ÿ˜

(beware: pickup only, it's 37 kg and nearly impossible to carry alone, I know this from firsthand experience ๐Ÿ˜–)

  8. ๐ŸŽ‰ The Mensch und Computer 2026 program is out now!

From August 30 to September 2, the HCI and UX community will come together at the University of Duisburg-Essen for four days of exchange, inspiration, and new perspectives.

Look forward to keynotes, workshops, panels, posters, demos, and sessions on topics such as AI, HCI, UX, robotics, security, and more.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore the full program: conftool.pro/muc2026/sessions.

  9. New publication! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’ป

My first paper in computer science is out: *Retrocomputing as a Model for Sustainable and Cognitive Computing*.

I explore what low-resource computing can teach us about computational minimalism, attention and sustainable design. ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒฑ

  10. @lmk Thanks for your comment! Very simple: Security breaks when usability is not considered. See PGP encryption, where even experts still have challenges in setting it up securely.

A positive example is Let's Encrypt: Easy to set up, huge impact on making the Web secure. So yes, it's possible!

Maybe it helps to start with a small change first. Even this may make an impact on users. This website has some science-backed resources to start: usecured.das.uni-giessen.de/en/

  13. [BLOG] We often talk about cyber security, but rarely about how people actually perceive it.

At my Cyber Horizon Keynote, I showed how Usable Security improves user acceptance, maintains strong security, and reduces costs.

  14. Again, I don't want to work on this, I want to work on my game. I did install Cambalache though.

I'm sure trying to make a suitable GUI will cure my brain of wanting to make this git GUI.

  15. Anyone know a GUI layout design app for something I can work with from C, or Go, or Python? Or am I doing this in Godot? I think there's something for GTK?

Note that I don't *want* to do this, but I do want to use the tool. Also, every time I go to make a GUI tool I get pissed off at the state of GUI development and give up.

  16. I was just thinking about OS interface metaphor. The computer is the desk. The keyboard and other peripherals are the stationary. The screen in the desktop. So what goes on a desktop?

On a desktop OS it's always been files. On a mobile, apps. But what might be more useful - on desktop but maybe on mobile too - would be *projects*. So clicking on icon can open a set of projects files, and whatever apps they were last opened with.

  17. Man, the ACM website -- the Association for Computing Machinery's site -- is so confusing with all the usernames and accounts.

I am trying to subscribe to one of their mailing lists and it's asking me for an email address and a password. As an ACM member, I have an @acm.org email; my account also knows about my Macalester email, and my newer St. Olaf email. I have tried all of those, and all the various passwords in my password manager. None work.

If only, somehow, someone who knows something about, say, human-computer interaction, or how to use, uh, computing machinery to run a website with user accounts, mailing list subscriptions, and so on.

(Context: I just want to sign up for the SIGCSE-LAC list -- the special interest group for computer science education's committee for liberal arts colleges. computing-in-the-liberal-arts.. This should not be hard. Grrr.)
