  1. Twenty-Eight year old piece on anthropology at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and the influence of Dr. Lucy Suchman on interface design. Very interesting historical piece on what was then recent history that readers can connect to current trends.

    The title is woefully dated.

  6. People should always be able to search by keyword rather than navigate menus.

Especially if we (who make human-computer interfaces) do not want people to turn to life-destroying chatbot interfaces.

Are #KDE and #Gnome or others working on a standard way to do that in each program?

  10. Sharing this new academic conference from the EUSSET mailing list because I think it sounds really cool:

    International Conference on Innovation in
Rural Regions (ICIRR), 13-15 September 2026 in Siegen, Germany – icirr.wineme.wiwi.uni-siegen.d

Could be something for (parts of) my #HCI and #CSCW research bubble. The submission phase is already done, it's all about registering and attending now! 🙂 It's a first time event, but I know the organizers and it's legit.

  17. Man, the ACM website -- the Association for Computing Machinery's site -- is so confusing with all the usernames and accounts.

I am trying to subscribe to one of their mailing lists and it's asking me for an email address and a password. As an ACM member, I have an @acm.org email; my account also knows about my Macalester email, and my newer St. Olaf email. I have tried all of those, and all the various passwords in my password manager. None work.

If only, somehow, someone who knows something about, say, human-computer interaction, or how to use, uh, computing machinery to run a website with user accounts, mailing list subscriptions, and so on.

(Context: I just want to sign up for the SIGCSE-LAC list -- the special interest group for computer science education's committee for liberal arts colleges. computing-in-the-liberal-arts.. This should not be hard. Grrr.)

  32. Automation bias

Heute habe ich echt was daraus gelernt: automation bias.

Automation bias is the propensity for humans to favor suggestions from automated decision-making systems and to ignore contradictory information made without automation, even if it is correct.

DOI: 10.2514/6.2004-6313.

Danke, Prof. Hastie!

First, I thought I misheard something. But then I realized: This wasn’t about the review itself, it was about the way that we do this in our team.
