  2. CW: Note: Car Climate Control UI

Why, when I change the temperature on the thermostat of my Renault Zoe does it change the fan direction, too? Is this a UI affordance for people who want their faces colder but their feet warmer? I don't understand!

  4. Ah, the riveting saga of Photoshop's "focus" challenge continues! Apparently, the elusive mode wasn't lost, just cleverly (or incompetently) rebranded. 🤔 Brace yourself for the thrilling tale of user interface drama where "Quiet Mode" stealthily lurks, just waiting to confuse the next unwitting soul. 🙄

  8. Most-often when a toaster has a 'cancel' button it's simply labelled 'cancel', 'stop', or with a cross. But this week, I discovered a toaster that uses the 'eject' icon - like you'd find on a VHS tape recorder - on its button.

At first I thought this was an unusual user interface choice, but I'm coming around to it. It feels like a more-accurate and skeuomorphic representation of what actually happens than a cross suggests.

But the existence of toasters like this one does necessarily mean that, some day, some Gen Alpha will see a tape deck in, like, a museum or something, and will say 'hey, that's cute: the button you press to pop the tape out is the same as the one you use to pop your toast out'.

  13. The Settings GUI in #konform #browser was in need of some love and is now having a refresh. Several new knobs, some shuffling around to make things more cohesive and less scattered, and some edits of hints to hopefully reduce potential for confusion.

    New options for:
    - First-Party Isolation
    - Enhanced #tracking Protection tweaking in Custom mode (useful mostly for FPI users)
    - #webrtc and ICE
    - #dom Push and its optional network connection
    - #jit features
    - WebAssembly (#wasm)
    - Geolocation
    - WebGPU
    - Async callstacks support
    - Persisting of browser history

Hints and the "advanced" options expand when clicking the "?" for parent option.

Still a bit hesitant on where global toggles for #webgpu and #webgl belong. And perhaps configuration for cross-origin referrer could also move to Browser Privacy controls?

Otherwise feels like things are coming together - What do you think? Anything you're missing or that feels out of place?

A more general example might be, which window you should be looking at in the first place.

For me, one of the features most sorely lost in the transformation of the NeXT UI to MacOS was the clear distinction between main, key, and “other” windows/panels…

  24. The inconsistency of Tahoe’s design

I even collected them all together, so the absurdity of the situation is more obvious.

It’s hard to justify Tahoe icons @ tonsky.me

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I recommend reading the whole post. It’s an opus to how Tahoe UX design is an utter denunciation of the Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines – once considered to be the gospel of how interface design must be done.

I know it’s beating a dead horse at this point

I know it’s beating a dead horse at this point. Tahoe is a complete disgrace when it comes to user interface design. I don’t want to conflate this as denouncing Liquid Glass – although I still have issues with it. It’s how Tahoe is the worst implementation of it to the point where Mac OS isn’t what it is supposed to be.

Anyway, here’s to hoping all the changes with the leadership is all going to bear fruit sometime soon.

I’ve also realized that I might skip a mac OS version for the first time ever, esp now that I’ve successfully reverted my Mac back to Sequoia.

Terry Godier's fantastic article last week introduced us to the term 'phantom obligation' and reiterated something I've been saying for years: that 'RSS zero', unlike 'inbox zero', is not an admirable goal. And that reminded me to share with you how I personally make my FreshRSS installation feel more like a tool that serves me, not the other way around.

The issue is bigger than a mere disregard for the principles in the 1992 guidelines. It's that training for User Interface designers is nonexistent. As the old guard retires, untrained designers reinvent square wheels.
