Any time Christopher Nolan releases a new film, it feels like an event. This is no different with his latest release, The Odyssey. Just watched #Odyssey - a $250M #fanfic with Discovery Channel narration energy. I'd pay real money for a Sean Connery voice-clone doing that narration, gravel and all.
I didn't steal a single beat from it. I learned what to avoid: swapping the ancient, bloody satisfaction of revenge for therapy-speak - "let go," "accept yourself," "walk away."
Homer's hero fights to reclaim his home.
This one just leaves it. -

TL;DR: Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey it an abysmal adaptation of the Odyssey but interesting as a film about war trauma.
There are lots of things I dislike and the ending was just bizarre to me, but the shots sure were beautiful, even if most of the places didn't look like Greece at all. Kudos to Himesh Patel for making me care about Eurylochus more than about Odysseus.

🎞 watched “The Odyssey” at the Metreon in 70mm IMAX on opening weekend, and mostly enjoyed it. No spoilers in this post.
My pal Rohit (@rohit.khare.org) had bought tickets last year, had a spare, and invited me along last minute. After an early dinner at Cha Cha Cha (@chachachasf.com) we made our way to the Metreon.
There was a line to get in. I have never before seen a line merely to get into the IMAX theater. We only missed maybe 1-2 movie trailers.
Our seats were in the front row, only a few seats from the left edge. In general I would not recommend the front 3-4 rows at an IMAX theater because it requires craning your neck back, and lots of swiveling to see the entire screen. Ironically being near the corner helped minimize the latter. Despite being sold out, the seat to my left was empty so I was able to lean back kinda diagonally to take in most of the screen.
The film itself was excellent (as many others have said).
There were parts that felt like they dragged a bit, yet also parts that felt rushed, where a bit more build-up before resolution would have hit harder. The only negative of the experience was the seating location in the IMAX theater, and the rigidness of the seats (they’re quite old, not like newer, plushier reclining seats that most theaters have upgraded to.)
The best part of The Odyssey is despite all the action, it dives into a number of philosophical and other intellectual challenges, illustrated by the situations encountered and paths taken.
I recommend seeing this film with nerdy friends on the earlier side, grabbing dinner after and discussing the nature, ethics, decisions, actions of the characters, and consequences thereof.
I definitely want to see it again.

I spontaneously went to see the #Odyssey tonight. It's hot weather outside and I'm the only person here with one more couple way in the back. Almost a private screening 😂
I'm curious if I'll enjoy it. I'm going in with an open mind, despite the atrocious trailer. If nothing else, I'll have material for a review and discussion with my mythology friends. -

Serial mistranslation, is there anything it can't do?
- In the #Odyssey, #Nausicaa is a Phaeacian princess who, prompted by Athena, acts with courage and hospitality to the shipwrecked and naked Odysseus.
- In #Victorian England, Nausicaa is elevated to a chaste, compassionate, domestic, dutiful, modest, and nurturing paragon of virtues. Unlike the dangerous beauty of Helen of Troy, Nausicaa is seen as a reliable supporting character for some male protagonist.
- Bernard #Evslin’s "Gods, Demigods and Demons" (1975) leans into this, but must have fallen asleep at some point. Nausicaa is portrayed as an eccentric, free-spirited Phaeacian princess who rejects traditional suitors to live a life devoted to nature, music, and imagination. Nausicaa gets 3 pages. Zeus only 1.
- Hayao #Miyazaki's "Nausciäa of the Valley of the Wind" is a fearless, nature-communing warrior for peace and co-existence, in part because of Bernard Evslin work misleading Miyazaki into thinking Nausicaa was widely recognized and known for her love of nature.
