Gramle in 1 day! I pretty much read this one off, and then went "hey, that's a word, let's try it!" and it was. Answer: fields. I thought the initial fricative was probably too loud for theta, and the little gap before the final /z/ was probably enough for a voiced stop. Huge drop in F2 but not much change in F3 looks like /il/. #linguistics #phonetics #gramle Gramle 933 1/5

Wow, that was a tricky one! Two of the same vowel in a row, both unstressed. No wonder that low-F3 portion at the end went on for so long, relatively stably. Answer: murderer. Gramle 917 4/5

Wow, my initial reading of this spectrogram was "colt" (which is only 4 segments though), and it turned out to be "tulip." I wouldn't think it would be possible to be quite that far off. The initial aspiration noise and CV transition really, really looked like a velar pinch, and the VOT was long and loud enough for a /k/. I did think it was possible that the /l/ was medial with a schwa after it, but it's not obvious at all that there's a second syllable. #Linguistics #Gramle #Phonetics Gramle 899 2/5

Wow, this one is ambiguous! After solving it and listening, I can hear it either as the intended anser 'triad' or as 'trad.' In fact, I hear it more as 'trad.' This fits with this speaker's typical monothongization of /ai/. Took me a long time to be sure that was two vowels in a row in the middle and to figure out which two. #Linguistics #Gramle #phonetics Gramle 893 4/5

Whoo, Gramle in 1 guess today! I was only seeing 4 segments, but decided the final bit could be a stop plus a non-sibilant fricative. Sure enough, the /d/ wasn't really audible in the recording, sort of consonant cluster simplification. Answer: breadth. Gramle 885 1/5

Demonstrating yet again that I have no clue after 30 years of reading spectrograms what a /v/ looks like. Or the range of what it can look like. Also, the speaker did not pronounce the vowel in the transcription, which threw me off track a bit. I was sure the initial consonant was either a super-pre-voiced /bdg/ or a nasal produced with a bit of a release burst as hyperarticulation. It was a /v/ with a burst. Lack of frication in the /v/ doesn't surprise me though. Answer: venal. Gramle 880 X/5

One thing I love about Gramle is when a segment is especially hard, and then when I finally hear the recording, I find out it was perceptually ambiguous. There was a reason it was hard. Speech is just not that clear. On today's (answer: minds) I really couldn't see why that first segment was neither /w/ nor /l/. When I listened to it, I could hear the recording as either "minds" or "winds." It really was acoustically a [w]. Gramle 870 3/5

This one was hard, mostly because the intended pronunciation based on the transcription was clearly the 1st syll stress pronunciation, but the speaker used the 2nd syll. stress pronunciation, changing both vowels. I also thought there was an initial stop (it was shaky onset of voicing), thought the heavily voiced medial /d/ might be /nd/, and thought the final thing might be a cluster rather than a /t/, so I had entirely too many segments to fit in. This was a hard one. Answer: adult. #Linguistics #gramle #phonetics Gramle 867 5/5

    Just getting back into this.

Couldn't tell at first if that was an [l] or a nasal. And I guessed [z] for the last sound. My first guess was "finds" [fajndz], so I was thinking final devoicing.

I did *not* know that word!

The playback isn't working for me - I can't confirm the vowel sequence there.

In the spectrogram, the shift is pretty subtle. For that last guess, I was sure it was a consonant I was missing - some little shift at the end of that /s/. But I can see how the vowel is very /i/-like.

What a great challenge for my first day back after a long break!

I spent a loooong time after that first guess, trying to figure out what actual word could fit.

First guess was that /ɹ/ was second in a cluster.

Not paying attention. I guessed a voiceless plosive at the start twice, before catching that there wasn't nearly enough aspiration. Not for English.

But I got there eventually. 🤓

Well, I definitely would have transcribed that middle vowel differently (with a schwa at the end of it: [iə]). But I'm content with their transcription.

I was sure that first vowel just had a big transition into the following consonant - didn't occur to me for 3 guesses that it might be a diphthong!

Well, my first guess had a tap /ɾ/ in the middle spot. I'd say that was right, listening to the actual pronunciation.

That first vowel, though! It sure looks like it should be closer to the corner of the vowel chart than the second one. So I first guessed /i/, then /ɪ/. But listening, I agree with /e/. Good to know!

I was really thrown off by the apparent voiceless of the final stop-fricative sequence.

That final devoicing business is more extensive than I thought!

  37. CW: Gramle spoilers

Spoilers for today's Gramle. Are we sure this speaker doesn't distinguish /a/ from /ɔ/? Today's word has /ɔ/ in my dialect, and it sounds like an /ɔ/ in the recording of the speaker. That's not the main thing that tripped me up today, I know to expect the neutralization of those two vowels in the transcriptions, although it does slow me down on accessing possible words.
