I did *not* know that word!

The playback isn't working for me - I can't confirm the vowel sequence there.

In the spectrogram, the shift is pretty subtle. For that last guess, I was sure it was a consonant I was missing - some little shift at the end of that /s/. But I can see how the vowel is very /i/-like.

What a great challenge for my first day back after a long break!

Well, I definitely would have transcribed that middle vowel differently (with a schwa at the end of it: [iə]). But I'm content with their transcription.

I was sure that first vowel just had a big transition into the following consonant - didn't occur to me for 3 guesses that it might be a diphthong!

I feel really clever today. I was going to start with /h/, but realized that with a single syllable, I was probably looking at consonant clusters. Formants in the early noise and into the main vowel suggested /w/.

My first guess was "quotes", because I'm still not great at spotting open front vowels. 🙃

Anyway, 2 guesses feels pretty good!

Interesting plosive+affricate sequence there. I thought maybe an affricate before the second vowel, and a voiceless plosive after.

I'm pretty pleased with how informative my mistakes were in the first and second guesses - really drew a clear picture of how to revise my ideas for each next guess.

That first vowel, though! It sure looks like it should be closer to the corner of the vowel chart than the second one. So I first guessed /i/, then /ɪ/. But listening, I agree with /e/. Good to know!

Three guesses. That second vowel looks so diphthongy! What a strong formant transition!

Final devoicing shouldn't surprise me.

Wild. Guess 1 had no hits, but I got all the sound classes right.

For guess 2, I felt like I couldn't find a real word that fit the evidence. Turns out I'd made the unfounded assumption that the same sounds couldn't occur twice in one word. Don't know where that came from!

That medial consonant! Sounds like a stop, sure enough, but I'm pretty sure it's being produced as [β] here, or maybe even an approximant.

And not for the first time, [æ] has a lower F2 than is expect in a front vowel.

Yes!

Voiceless non-sibilant fricative.
Back non-low vowel. Nasal with a suggestion of labial formant transition on the following vowel, which then moves to a clearly front formant pattern. And a faint nasal pattern at the end. (I was actually thinking "foamy" at first, but needed another sound to make 5.)
