  3. A quotation from G. K. Chesterson

For there are two ways of dealing with nonsense in this world. One way is to put nonsense in the right place; as when people put nonsense into nursery rhymes. The other is to put nonsense in the wrong place; as when they put it into educational addresses, psychological criticisms, and complaints against nursery rhymes or other normal amusements of mankind.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) English journalist and writer
Essay (1921-10-15), “Child Psychology and Nonsense,” closing words, Illustrated London News, “Our Notebook” column

Suppose I were to make up a superstition. What would I create?

The best ones come from the irrational fears of children, I think. Something like if you kick off your covers in the night, your mom will never be warm again. Even on the sunniest of days, she'll shiver, even wearing the warmest of clothes. Now all it needs is a nursery rhyme.

  9. Rub-a-dub-dub Three Birds in a Tub

When I first saw this image of birds at the bird feeder, an old nursery rhyme immediately came to mind.

"Rub-a-dub-dub, Three men in a tub, And who do you think they be? The butcher, the baker, The candlestick-maker, And all of them gone to sea." - James Hook,

"The nursery rhyme Rub-a-dub-dub was first published in 1798 in the second volume of Hook's Christmas Box, a collection by English composer James Hook. However, the rhyme's origins are believed to trace back to oral traditions, and its exact authorship remains unknown. Over time, the rhyme evolved into the version we know today." - Copilot

  13. "Froggy In the Dell" teableau for 07/09/24

There's a folk song about a frog who lives in a well, who courts a mouse in the dell. In one version, on the way to his wedding feast, he gets eaten by a duck. In my display, he arrives in the dell after floating there safely in a cup. 💚

  14. CW: Criticism and analysis of violence in a nursery rhyme; swearing

Anyone ever think about how seriously fucked up "Three Blind Mice" is, on so many levels?

Ignoring any historical references that might be hidden behind the rhyme, it's just completely awful.

So, these three mice are blind, and for some reason a human's reaction is to mutilate them by cutting off their tails?!

And then, to top it all off, the apparent take away from the rhyme is the three blind mice, not the extreme violence of the human?!

And we still teach children this?!

    What the actual fuck?!

  15. I often pick a book about #PaulaRego off the shelf to enjoy (be puzzled by) her wonderful work... this afternoon while looking at her #nurseryrhymes series of prints I was again taken how striking yet disquieting her image of Ba Ba Black Sheep is.... on the face of it seems relatively innocent rhyme, but in Rego's rendering you pause & wonder, 'what is happening here'?

Something to ponder on a Sunday afternoon?
