  1. Part 2
At the time of the quake, his internet connection to his company failed, and he couldn't reach anyone.
He could just watch everything through TV.
His ongoing feeling of guilt is one of the reasons he's now working here as a volunteer.

    Interesting:
The organized crime Yamaguchi-gumi yakuza syndicate was actively involved in the relief effort from the beginning, distributing substantial amounts of food and supplies to needy victims.

  2. Part 1
Today I visited "The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction & Human Renovation Institution".

Impressive & distressing, especially as the guide explained that he still feels guilty for not having been there, as he left for the USA five days before the earthquake for work.

  3. Part 6
    Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

Filmed it with my DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and with my Canon R50 with a Samyang AF 12 / 2 lense.

In this particular lighting scenario, the R50 decisively outperformed the Osmo Pocket 3.

The red light on the left side in the first part is a night angler and not an error / glitch.
And yes ambulances have red lights in Japan (visible on the bridge).

  4. Part 4
    Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

The bridge is impressive during the day and a real beauty at night.

As soon as the sun sets, the bridge turns on its lights.
If I read correctly there are 31 different light modes available.
Which light mode is shown depends on the time of the year, if it is a full or half hour and if it is a special occasion (sakura, etc).

    Akashi Kaikyo Bridge!

On the side of Kobe you have the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center and the Maiko Marine Promenade which is an observation deck.
    Sounds boring?!
    Definitely not!
For 250¥ you can go up to the observation deck on the underside of the bridge!

You go up onto the 8th floor and then walk a footpath "under" the bridge :)

  6. Part 1
    Akashi Kaikyo Bridge!

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's second longest suspension bridge with a main span of 1.991m connecting Kobe and Awaji Island with a total length of 3.911m.

    Some might wonder why 1.991m?!
Originally it was 1.990m but the Great Hanshin Earthquake moved the two towers and so 1 extra meter had to be added.

  8. What I did find while strolling around where a lot of great manhole covers!

  9. I also went through Chinatown Nankin-Machi.
What should I say... Another overcrowded touristy shopping street...

So I left in a hurry!

    Kobe Meriken Park

And it is also the place of the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial!

The sheer number of deaths and destruction alone...

    Sorakuen

The garden could be my number 1 if there would be less / no city noise ...

  13. Part 4
    Sorakuen

    The garden itself is great.
Sadly it is in the center of the city, so you will always herr some city noise :(

    Sorakuen

I think the boiler should be renewed and the furniture is a little bit ... old... ;)

    Sorakuen

Another nice place in Kobe is the Sorakuen.
A japanese garden with a few buildings from the colonial era.

  17. Part 1
    Nunobiki Falls

In my opinion the realy relaxing part starts after leaving the gardens as the are very crowded with some very noisy tourists...

As soon as you exit the noise is mainly gone and you can keep on walking through woods until you reach the waterfall.

  18. Part 5
    Nunobiki Herb Gardens

Flowerbed upon flowerbed or herb bed. It's beautiful and fragrant. But there are also open spaces to relax in hammocks, etc.

  19. Part 4
    Nunobiki Herb Gardens

Inside the greenhouse there is a statue of a mother and child, a terrace with an "infinity pool" and various photo spots.

  20. Part 3
    Nunobiki Herb Gardens

The gardens are absolutely fantastic and a very unique species of "pot people" lives there!

  21. Part 2
    Nunobiki Herb Gardens

The main building at the top.of the garden has a very german vibe and they play classical music?!?

    And they sell bavarian beer?!?

  22. Part 1
    Nunobiki Herb Gardens

In Kobe i went with the ropeway to the Nunobiki Herb Gardens.

The ropeway is from Doppelmayr, a proper Austrian company!

The ropeway and gardens give you an amazing view of Kobe and also Osaka if the weather is nice!

  23. I've been busy traveling in the Himeji & Kobe area the last few days.
That's why there are now lots of pictures and videos to sort through...

  25. #JP06 2006-04-11

On day 16 of my first Japan trip in 2006, the amount of rain alternated between “heavy” and “torrential”. After visiting Osaka Castle in the morning, I took a short train ride to Kobe, where I went to Motomachi and Chinatown.
