  1. Massive growth on my Vietnamese coriander cuttings' roots. 😍💗 They have a gorgeous pink/white colour.
It took a total of 22 days to propagate to this stage - from when cuttings were taken & put into a large glass vase.💚👩‍🌾

  2. Some of my green shiso plants have started flowering. I'm saving their seeds to share.
Grow both green & red shiso to boost your cultural herbal/culinary gardens diversity.

*Red shiso has a more bitter taste & is better cooked up in soups/stews/stir fry foods. Green shiso is milder & better for adding to fresh salads.

  3. Choy Sum with pork soup - over rice.
Another simple, peasant meal, that my family has made & eaten for many generations.
We grow choy sum, year round. We grow several other Asian greens because we want to increase our own fresh & healthy homegrown cultural crops & decrease our money spent buying healthy fresh produce.

  4. I need 16 free colanders to fill my old kiddie pool to create a perpetual isolated garden of only watercress. Traditional Teochew watercress soup, with pork, has been one of my fave comfort foods since childhood. I could eat a bowl or two every day & still want to eat more of it. My fave comfort foods are peasant foods - simple, delicious, nutritious, goodness.

Mom & I used to go harvest it from the wilds for years. Now that we're both older, I want to grow them for easier & regular harvesting.

  5. One of the reasons that I like using glass containers for plant propagations in water is because I absolutely love seeing roots appear & grow. I can see the beautiful roots well, through glass containers 💚😊

These are #VietnameseCoriander propagations. I'm gifting some to kind local folks that I've met & befriended while out doing community building work.

  6. I don't want to hear from anyone who says -> You can't grow this (insert Global South cultural food/medicine crop unfamiliar to Global North gardeners), here!
I'm gonna try! STFU. I enjoy experiments with trying to grow more #CulturalCrops here.

  7. Please consider harvesting & cooking/eating #SweetPotato / #Yam #leaves.
They're not true potatoes, not in the nightshade family. Their leaves are fully edible & a rural Asian food staple.

Try this simple, tasty recipe, with yam leaves 🙂

  8. Eyeing up my old blue plastic kiddie pool to possibly repurpose into a perpetual moist garden bed - only for watercress. I could grow so much watercress out of a kiddie pool. If it's set up well & slightly protected in Winter - I could potentially have a year round watercress crop to harvest from, as needed for eating.

My family really loves eating watercress. We use it raw & cooked. My fave is a traditional watercress & pork soup - classic cultural soup that I've loved since childhood. Mom & Aunties used to go harvest them from the wilds & from ditches here. You can buy it from most grocery/Asian food markets. It's easier & more frugal to grow our own & harvest from backyard.

  9. #CapeHawthorn aka #WaterHawthorn.
It's native to #SouthAfrica. People there have long cultivated & harvested the buds & flowers as food. It's used to make #WaterblommetjieBredie - a traditional South African stew. The #Afrikaans name of this traditional cultural dish translates to "stew of little water flowers".

It's not a widely known edible water plant here. It's delicious. If you enjoy green beans - you'll probably enjoy eating Cape hawthorn buds/flowers too.

  10. I'm going to connect more with the guy from India. To discuss working with him to bring more #CulturalCrops from his native lands & start growing more of them here. I'm huge on increasing #FoodSecurity for all & we have a lot of #GlobalSouth #diaspora here so growing more cultural food crops is big in my books.
Also, with accelerated #ClimateChange - it's good to look at cultural food crops that can withstand not getting a lot of water.
He is part of a local Indian cricket team & they're interested in food security projects here 😀💚

He met me at community orchard.

  11. I'll be at 2 different workplaces tomorrow for two different local nonprofits.

LifeCycles Project team is having their jam making work party all day, out of Mustard Seed Distribution HQ kitchen. I'll be there most of tomorrow afternoon.

In the morning, I'll be helping out with another Iyé Creative Collective event 👇

Seeds and Synergies is a gathering that aims to bring together community members, growers, farmers, and farmers to be, facilitators, and partners from racialized groups to reflect on the role of Culturally Relevant Crops and Land Access in shaping the access of these groups to locally grown, healthy and nutritious foods, education, employment opportunities, income, and belonging to the land, to themselves and their communities.

For the past five years, Iyé Creative has been working with community members and local farmers to learn about cultural crops – plant relatives that carry deep meaning for our food, health, and traditions on Coast Salish lands. We’ve also been pushing for fairer land policies so more people can grow the foods and medicines that matter to them.

Cultural foods aren’t just products on a market, or grocery store shelf. They’re living connections that tie us to land, spirit, and each other.
