  1. Turns out there's at least one person out there who nerds out to the #linguistics of #Cantonese kinship terms and terms of address. Kinship is a bit more complex than it is in Mandarin #Chinese and that's already substantially more complicated than in European languages. (Most contemporary speakers don't really know and/or use the fully nuanced terms though. I certainly don't as a heritage speaker.)

  6. @MLNow My mother used to take me to a #ChineseOpera for company when I was a child but I hated it because I didn't speak or understand the language (& still don't beyond a very rudimentary level) & the because the sound was so "foreign" & unappealing to me. 🤷‍♂️

I couldn't even stand to listen to the entirety of the short Chinese Opera audio clip embedded in this article. 🤢

She stopped taking me any Chinese opera performances because I was very vocal about not liking it &, unlike my inability to speak #Cantonese better, I do not regret not attending another Chinese Opera performance since.

OBTW, I don't much like attending or listening to European Opera either. 🤷‍♂️

  7. My grandmother was really into Chinese medicine. Herbals stuff and oils and tinctures. This is one of the things she would use on us! I always thought it was from Hong Kong but it’s from Ipoh in Malaysia! It’s the Chinese version of Vick’s vapour rub #cantonese

  8. @mookie can we start using the #cantonese? because we are not visible on fedi places ❤️ @secretasianman

  9. My niece is so funny. She calls her dad (my bro) “Lo yeh, mo yeh” old thing, nothing #cantonese is such a great language, the older I get the more I appreciate the colour and grit of it! #chinese #family

There are clear historical reasons why #Cantonese was previously the only & still is the primary Chinese language spoken in SF Chinatown & in Chinese communities around the world.

Fact is, Cantonese as a language is older than #Mandarin.

Cantonese can trace its roots in southern China in Guangdong back 2000 years ago, while Mandarin only came into use in northern China about 1000 ye ago when the Mongols conquered China & established Beijing as its capital.

Cantonese is still in use in China, despite Mandarin being adopted as the "official" language of China in 1955.

And, until very recently almost all Chinese who immigrated from China came from southern China & spoke only Cantonese

It was theae people who founded the Chinese communities in the US & around the world & almost every person of Chinese origin living outside of China can trace their roots to them.

So, it is neither funny nor surprising that Cantonese is still spoken in SF Chinatown & in Chinese cimmunities around the world.

  11. The wonderful thing about living in the #sfba is that you sometimes get this intersection of #cars and #asian life.

Gao yut yut = 9-1-1 in Cantonese. The car is a Porsche 911.

  13. @mookie What makes it #Mongolian?

Just looks like pretty ordinary #Cantonese #ChowMein to me. 🤷‍♂️

Chow mein or not, I could easily scarf down a quart box of the stuff in one sitting and have done so more than once in the past.

    LOL! 😉

  17. Picked up a very mouldy, broken, dirty #cassette in #KualaLumpur: a collection of songs by Frances Yip, an absolute #cantopop legend.

Someone had been inside before, fixing a snapped-off leader tape by just connecting the magnetic tape directly to the reel. The card insert was bent and fox-eared and the jewel case cracked. Parts were covered in insect droppings.

Replaced the felt pad and rusty screws, spliced in a new leader, straightened the tape shell with heat, cleaned, steamed and pressed the card, replaced the case and slip mats, reglued the labels... the mould came off with a few plays and now it looks and sounds great. It has its battle scars but it's alive and kicking, ready for another 46 years.

This is an amazing #AAPI story!!! 👏👏👏

    My father (b. 1913 d. 1989) read #ChinesePoetry & I'm sure would have enjoyed the class.

I've asked a better connected & more fluent #Cantonese speaking friend of mine to tell her friends about this article & the #Chinese poetry class to see if she can help to add more as well as younger members to the class to keep it going.
