Wat heet mooi? Architectuur
Skara Brae, OrkneyEen tijdje geleden vroeg ik u te noemen wat u mooi vond uit de Oudheid en omdat de respons me overweldigde, heb ik tot nu toe alleen nog maar over mooie teksten geschreven. Vandaag neem ik u mee langs voorbeelden van architectuur waarop de lezers van deze blog elkaar attenderen. Er zitten verrassende keuzes bij.
Prehistorie
Eén zo’n verrassing was dat vier monumenten uit de Atlantische Prehistorie werden genoemd. Om te beginnen de megalieten van Carnac, weliswaar “strikt genomen geen Oudheid” maar wel zo’n plek waar iemands liefde voor de oude wereld kan ontluiken. Even oud als het spijkerschrift en onze hunebedden zijn de megalieten van Callanish op de Hebriden en de grafheuvel van Newgrange. Skara Brae op de Orkney-eilanden is wat jonger en werd tweemaal genoemd. Dit kleine dorp is opgegraven door niemand minder dan Gordon Childe.
Egypte en het Nabije Oosten
Skara Brae was bewoond in de tijd waarin de Egyptenaren leerden hoe ze piramides moesten bouwen. Iemand noemde het complex van Giza “veel mooier en vooral ontzagwekkender in het echt dan je je kunt voorstellen”. Ook genoemd werd de Kapel van Hetep-hr-achty in het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, die dateert van ongeveer 2200 v.Chr. De Witte Kapel van koning Senusret I, het oudste gebouw dat we kennen uit Karnak, is ruim twee eeuwen jonger. Het Karnakcomplex zelf werd ook genoemd.
KarnakVerder werd het Graf van Nacht bij Thebe genoemd, dus niet ver van Karnak, en het praalgraf van Nefertari, de echtgenote van koning Ramses II. Uit dezelfde tijd dateren de tempels van Abu Simbel, terwijl het complex van Philae eeuwen jonger is.
Uit het Nabije Oosten werden alleen Persepolis en Naqš-e Rustam, genoemd: de residentie van de Perzische koningen en vier van hun grafmonumenten. Irak lijdt natuurlijk nogal onder het feit dat het de onverdiende reputatie heeft onbereisbaar te zijn, terwijl het enige museum met echt opvallende architectonisch resten uit Mesopotamië, het Pergamonmuseum, voor de voorzienbare eeuwigheid is gesloten. (Het verbaasde me dat niemand Hattusa noemde.)
Griekenland
We gaan naar Griekenland. Het Minoïsche paleis Kato Zakros op het oostelijke puntje van Kreta werd genoemd (“inclusief de vallei der doden erachter”) en de indrukwekkende muren van Tiryns documenteren de Bronstijd.
TirynsUit de archaïsche tijd werden de tempels van Paestum en de tempels van Agrigento genoemd – de laatste driemaal. Ik had Delfi verwacht, maar u noemde het niet. “Overstelpend indrukwekkend was de eerste aanblik van de Akropolis”, schrijft iemand, en een ander noemt “met name de entree” van de Atheense Akropolis. Een derde noemt speciaal het Erechtheion en een vierde is onder de indruk van het Parthenon, en haalt een mooie herinnering op:
Voor het eerst op 8mm film gezien (rond 1967), terwijl mijn eerste vriendinnetje er met haar zusje onder de strakblauwe hemel tussen de zuilen speelde. Haar vader (beeldhouwer van beroep) liet deze film zien op onze lagere school, en ik besloot dat de Oudheid mijn studiegebied zou worden, ook al moest er een half jaar farmaciestudie aan te pas komen voordat die keuze definitief werd. Toen ik de tempel voor het eerst ‘live’ zag (in 1974) maakte zich een grote ontroering van mij meester.
Ook genoemd: de resten van de school van Aristoteles tussen Vergina en Naoussa (“dichter bij de Griekse Oudheid geraakte ik niet”) en natuurlijk ook de hellenistische stad Petra.
Rome
Een bezoek aan Rome is incompleet zonder fietstocht langs de Via Appia, en gelukkig werd die genoemd. Meer republikeinse architectuur noemde u niet, maar wel het grafveld van Cerveteri, dat tussen de zesde en tweede eeuw in gebruik is geweest. We gaan snel verder naar de augusteïsche monumenten. Twee mensen noemden het theater van Orange, iemand noemde de brug van Mérida (“zooooo lang”) en iemand anders noemde de brug bij Rimini.
MéridaHet Gouden Huis van keizer Nero kreeg als commentaar dat het “na de enige gebruiker definitief buiten gebruik werd gesteld”. Dezelfde tijd is gedocumenteerd in de verwoeste stad Herculaneum. Iemand noemde speciaal
een houten trap in Herculaneum, in een simpel burgerhuis. De onderste treden waren nog vrijwel intact, en met elke hogere trede werd het donkerder en meer beschadigd, tot na een trede of acht de trap ophield te bestaan.
Mij ontroeren dit soort details ook altijd, en ik begrijp helemaal waarom iemand “twee keldermuren van een Romeinse stadswoning in Tongeren” noemt. De Pont du Gard bij Nîmes werd genoemd, net als de Romeinse resten bij Arles en het aquaduct van Segovia (“zooooo hoog”). Xanten geeft een “goede indruk van de opbouw van een Romeinse stad”. Aan de andere kant van het Romeinse Rijk: Palmyra.
Rome, een vrijwel leeg PantheonEn dan zijn er de resten uit de tijd van keizer Hadrianus, zoals de Muur van Hadrianus, de Romeinse weg van 124-125 en de haven van Voorburg, de Villa van Hadrianus in Tivoli. Iemand noemde het Pantheon in Rome, en iemand anders noemde het Pantheon in Rome, en weer iemand anders noemde het Pantheon in Rome (“omdat de koepel zo overweldigend perfect is”) en ook was er iemand die het Pantheon in Rome noemde, waar je weliswaar de toeristenmassa weg moet denken. “Maar dat is bij dit gebouw, waar je blik onmiddellijk naar het ‘oog’ in het plafond wordt gedwongen, niet zo heel moeilijk.”
Iemand noemde de tombes van Hierapolis (Pamukkale) en even verderop de stad Afrodisias. Voor mij nieuw waren de catacomben in Pécs, Hongarije, “met een reconstructie van een Romeins graf”.
Kerk van de Heilige Wijsheid, IstanbulLate Oudheid
Vier mensen noemden de Hagia Sofia in Istanbul.
Ik legde als negentienjarige sufferd alleen op treinreis het advies van een Iers-Mexicaans-Amerikaans docentenechtpaar naast me neer en bezocht eerste de aanpalende Blauwe Moskee. Tijdens feestje met Turkse studenten kreeg ik allervriendelijkst op m’n falie. Ergo: ik volg gewoon de adviezen en tips op van mensen die wel kijk op kunst en cultuur hebben, en het kwam toch nog goed.
Tot slot noemde iemand het Clonmacnoise-klooster in Ierland, dat even oud is als de Hagia Sofia, en daarmee keren we terug waar we begonnen: in het verre westen, aan de Atlantische Oceaan.

Die Freilassung von Ogün #Samast (letztes Foto) aus dem #Bolu-#Gefängnis wegen "guter Führung" hat in der #Türkei für große Aufregung gesorgt. Der #Ultranationalist Samast hatte Hrant Dink am 19. Januar 2007 am helllichten Tag in #Istanbul erschossen. Dink war ein fortschrittlicher armenischer #Intellektueller und #Chefredakteur der #Wochenzeitung #Agos.
Auch die alevitische Bewegung in der Türkei reagierte wütend auf die Freilassung von Samast, der bereits bei seiner Festnahme von türkischen #Polizisten, die ein Foto mit ihm machen wollten, heldenhaft behandelt wurde (drittes Foto). Der alevitische Dachverband Föderation der #Aleviten und #Bektaschis (ABF) erklärte in einer Stellungnahme, es liege in der Natur des #Erdoğan-Regimes und seiner #AKP-Partei, Mörder freizulassen. Damit bezieht sich die #ABF auf die kürzliche Freilassung von muslimischen #Fundamentalisten, die 1993 in der türkischen Stadt #Sivas ein #Massaker an Teilnehmern eines alevitischen Festes verübten.

I am a bit disappointed by a (recent?) change they have done to how entering Ayasofya works: the entrance is not anymore from the main portal, but from the side. This means that the mosaic depicting Constantine, Mary and Justinian is not seen by most people. On another topic, the style contrast between Ayasofya and Sultanahmet is always food for thought: a play between light and darkness, two mirrors of the same thing. #istanbul #turkey #ayasofya #sultanahmet
