There are clear historical reasons why #Cantonese was previously the only & still is the primary Chinese language spoken in SF Chinatown & in Chinese communities around the world.
Fact is, Cantonese as a language is older than #Mandarin.
Cantonese can trace its roots in southern China in Guangdong back 2000 years ago, while Mandarin only came into use in northern China about 1000 ye ago when the Mongols conquered China & established Beijing as its capital.
Cantonese is still in use in China, despite Mandarin being adopted as the "official" language of China in 1955.
And, until very recently almost all Chinese who immigrated from China came from southern China & spoke only Cantonese
It was theae people who founded the Chinese communities in the US & around the world & almost every person of Chinese origin living outside of China can trace their roots to them.
So, it is neither funny nor surprising that Cantonese is still spoken in SF Chinatown & in Chinese cimmunities around the world.

One of the Iranians I follow on XiaoHongShu. Her Mandarin is absolutely impeccable.
It's really wonderful to follow Iranians and Russians on xhs because there are hardly ever the arrogant, rude, hate-filled comments you see on X.
But I don't want to give you the impression that Chinese social media is heavenly either. There are racist and bigoted comments too. However it's not like a flood compared to X or even Threads.
But on the whole I don't have to endure the usual antognaistic screaming and moral grandstanding we are so used to on Western social media

The newest improvement in my language learning tool #xiaolongdictionary is, that one can now comfortably enter special characters, that one might not have as keys on standard keyboard layouts. Since I use it to learn #mandarin / #chinese and I use US keyboard layout, those special characters are the pīnyīn vowels with diacritics.
This looks as shown in [1].
Currently, the shortcut is `ctrl+i`, "i" for "insert". The special chars can be configured in the config file.

New idea for my language learning tool: Saved searches! I think I got the idea from #thunderbird, where one can save searches as virtual folders, which when clicked perform the same search again across all selected folders locally or remotely, as configured.
In my tool it will merely filter local vocabulary. This is also good preparation for doing things like showing the last search result of a previous session.

New features include:
(1) context menu with basic text editing functionality for the custom text entry widget
