  2. Mandarin is Taiwan’s main language today, but it was not widely spoken before the mid-20th century.

    In 2020, 66.3% of residents used Mandarin as their primary language. After 1945, and especially after 1949, the KMT promoted Guóyǔ (國語) through schools, government, and media.

    Taiwanese Mandarin also differs slightly from Mandarin in China, including vocabulary and the use of traditional Chinese characters.
