My father (b. 1913 d. 1989) read #ChinesePoetry & I'm sure would have enjoyed the class.
I've asked a better connected & more fluent #Cantonese speaking friend of mine to tell her friends about this article & the #Chinese poetry class to see if she can help to add more as well as younger members to the class to keep it going.

Apropos of this post earlier today, I watched Ward Serrill’s wonderful documentary film ‘Dancing with the Dead: Red Pine and the Art of Translation’ this afternoon. I must have watched it at least 5 or 6 times now since its release and I always get something new from it.

Ume: “Of course I read, don’t all authors? I especially like yuri and josei romances. Poetry is nice too. I’m not very good at writing poetry, that’s Tomo’s department. But I love reading it. I was just reading some by Liu Yuxi (刘禹锡) today.”

35 years now since the Tian’anmen Massacre and the crackdowns around the country. History doesn’t repeat itself, but there are a lot of half-true rhymes.
Even with all the restrictions after June 4, Wang Shuo’s blistering 'Not Even Human' (千万别把我当人), which I translated a bit of at https://www.burninghou.se/p/babble-and-cant-and-flummery , was still published in late 1989. I’m out of date on the PRC and could be wrong, but it's hard to imagine anything like it making it into print today.

#ChineseLiterature #ChinesePoetry folk, has anyone got a recommendation for books/articles about the #Shijing? I’m back reading the Waley translation and greatly enjoying it, but I’d love some more context, both on the history and on the commentaries that have informed the translation choices.

I’m still reading the Book of Songs, but I admit my velocity has dropped off a bit after reaching the end of the Airs of the States.
Feeling somewhat vindicated by this episode of the #ChineseLiteraturePodcast, which discusses the poem She Bore the Folk (生民): https://chineseliteraturepodcast.libsyn.com/podcast/she-bore-the-folk, https://podcasts.apple.com/ch/podcast/chinese-literature-podcast/id1102235260?i=1000631326273. Lee Moore points out that although all the poems in the #Shijing are important, it’s the lyric ones that are most quoted in Chinese literature, not the narrative ones!

Since I was a teenager I've adored Ezra Pound's love poem "The River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter," after Li Po.
In later years I've been more aware of how — given the challenges of translation and the difficulty of any Westerner's seeing Chinese culture straight — unlikely it is that a Chinese scholar would find much to admire in the poem.
