He found himself in Meran with some cousins who had various slight ailments, but, being rich and imaginative, had gone to a sanatorium to be cured. But for its sanatoria, Meran might be a cheerful place; their ubiquity reminds a healthy man too often that the air is really good. Being well enough himself, except for a few mental worries, he went to a Gasthaus in the neighbourhood. In the sanatorium his cousins complained bitterly of the food, the ignorant “sisters,” the inattentive doctors, and the idiotic regulations generally—which proves that people should not go to a sanatorium unless they are really ill. However, they paid heavily for being there, so felt that something was being accomplished, and were annoyed when he called each day for tea, and told them cheerfully how much better they looked—which proved, again, that their ailments were slight and quite curable by the local doctor at home.

Shishi: A second highball did nothing, but when I started on a third, something broke in me, and all my misery came rolling up my chest. I had been an idol, and now I was nothing. NOTHING. The lights blurred, and the bartender behind the counter became indistinct.

It was in that haze that I heard a husky woman’s voice say, “You’re crying.” I looked up, expecting a ghost, but it was a woman’s face, framed in bleached blonde hair. I touched her face to be sure. Even as drunk as I was, I could tell it was beautiful. Her heavy makeup couldn’t hide its innate loveliness.

She touched my glass and said, “Another highball?”

#MyGirlFriend: Kao would like to have done something to decrease discrimination against sexual/gender minorities. Not that she is doing much along that line.

I pulled the floppy hat down and the N95 mask up higher, hoping they might hide how red my cheeks were. They probably matched the large cherry-red sunglasses I was sporting. I’d considered wearing a hijab but was unsure about the cultural implications of a nonbeliever wearing one. “I told you I don’t want people to see two Professor Henrietta Dubois’s.”

#PennedPossibilities⁩ 995 How do you balance making (emotional) demands on the reader with taking care of them?

Hopefully, I write with enough depth that it takes care of itself. When I feel like it has been bla, bla, bla too long working on some action, and when I feel like that has been a roller coaster of action scenes, I throw in some dialogue.

No formula besides my gut and an occasional nudge by a beta reader.

Many have been to the States for varying lengths of time. That helps with handwaving cultural glitches I may insert by mistake.

Kakuriyo of course, is not even of this world.

And Bijou from #TimeTravelingGhost has been galavanting all over time and the world. 1920 Paris, 1930 South Pacific and North Atlantic, Jurassic Switzerland, Cretaceous–Paleogene Yucatán, 2025 US, 1912 North Atlantic, and 1999 London. She is well-traveled.

• My #Girlfriend Almost Got Me Killed: Progressive Trance.
• #KonbiniIdol: Chika (Underground Idol). A mix of GothMetal and MetalCore for the fucked up parts. #DiableVoix would be a good choice. Maybe something like #MelonBatakeAGoGo for the weirder bits. If #MigmaShelter were still around, they could do psychedelic trance for the romantic bits.
• Bijou the #TimeTravelingGhost would be eclectic depending on the era.
• No idea about #Aisisu. New Ageish.

Ghost-sick is a life-threatening illness that doctors are helpless in the face of.

Snip Konbini Idol:

Only I didn’t tell him the next day or the day after. Instead, I lay prostrate with a high fever on the futon. I kept dreaming there was someone at the door who wanted to speak to me. I distinctly remembered that the door was red, a detail that seemed important at the time. Tomo restrained me more than once from getting up to open it. At least, I think he did. It was all hazy.

My days were as muddled as my nights. Tomo fed me rice porridge, gave me sponge baths, and smokes. I remember telling him we all needed to smoke Golden Bats, and then having a coughing fit when he gave me one. At other times, the priest would sprinkle me with sake, force me to eat salt, and chant over me.
