  1. Bit more done.

Next I'll be painting the spaces in that wider outer border dark red, and doing the pencil swirls in gold, then another row of blue circles around the outside.

It'll be put up for sale when it's done, £150 including postage. :)

  3. Speedball C-1 nib with custom Tono & Lims fountain pen ink on Rhodia paper. Yes, the ink just comes out like that (the purple can be accentuated by gently blotting once the ink has had a little time to dry). #calligraphy

  6. We didn't sleep great and I think I'm at that level of tired where I'll zone out writing loads of words and make silly mistakes, so no Little Prince today.

Instead, a palette cleanser :) Something fun and silly. Waiting for the ink to dry then I'll do the box letters and the border. It's A4 size on cotton rag khadi paper, and will be up for sale when it's done.

  13. “Typography is absolutely fundamental to Japanese poster design because writing itself is regarded as an art form. Traditional Japanese calligraphy, or shodō, is something every child learns at school, but mastering it takes decades. Every brushstroke follows established principles — the pressure, the angle, where the brush pauses and how the stroke leaves the paper are all carefully controlled. On many classic film posters, the lettering was created by master calligraphers, so the typography isn’t simply text; it’s an essential part of the artwork.”

    — Max Fujiwara-Lieven, Japan Poster Shop Collection, interviewed for Tom Koch’s Type Travel Diary:

  24. Now these brushes haven't been given a fair go.

They're Ferraris. 100% weasel hair, which feels like cat's fur. Made by a family who've been making brushes for 90 years.

But I found them too slippery, too flexible. I found I can use the large brush with rigid classical technique, slowly, back and forth. I did today's haiku piece with it.

I still can't get the small brush to do what I want, as my small-regular technique is too stiff. Hopefully I'll find a use for it.

  27. I don't often talk about the real stars of the show - my brushes.

These are small brushes. They're actually ink painting brushes, not used for calligraphy.

When I started small characters, I couldn't take classes for 9 months. I struggled practicing at home, and finally my teacher explained small characters should be done with a bigger pen. But having practiced with these brushes, I'd got into a groove, and they've become my trademark, flaws and all.
