  1. #Kanji #calligraphy of Basho’s haiku, In the plum blossom scent, the sun pops out, a mountain path (ume ga ka ni notto hi no deru yamaji kana)’ by Eri Takase.

  2. “Typography is absolutely fundamental to Japanese poster design because writing itself is regarded as an art form. Traditional Japanese calligraphy, or shodō, is something every child learns at school, but mastering it takes decades. Every brushstroke follows established principles — the pressure, the angle, where the brush pauses and how the stroke leaves the paper are all carefully controlled. On many classic film posters, the lettering was created by master calligraphers, so the typography isn’t simply text; it’s an essential part of the artwork.”

  4. I don't often talk about the real stars of the show - my brushes.

These are small brushes. They're actually ink painting brushes, not used for calligraphy.

When I started small characters, I couldn't take classes for 9 months. I struggled practicing at home, and finally my teacher explained small characters should be done with a bigger pen. But having practiced with these brushes, I'd got into a groove, and they've become my trademark, flaws and all.

  5. Calligraphy practice with my standard phrase, using Higgins ink and a Speedball C-4 nib. Got some excess ink on the first letter but the Clairfontaine paper just handled it.

  6. Ye artisans!

For an art piece I’m looking to include some “good enough” illuminated manuscript art, including #calligraphy (vernacular English, not Latin) & #gilding

Actual calligraphy is a stunning SKILL and prob not smth I’m cut out for (*whines in EDS*), so I’m looking for advice on how to learn something passable? key stylistic details to be mindful of?

Please lay thine advice, resources, methods (& maybe hype? I am hella handwriting insecure but I rlly wanna make this!) upon me, thy fool

  8. In May I spent a week in Cheryl Jacobsen's Gothic & Vellum class with Friends of Calligraphy, learning to write and paint directly on parchment. This book seemed to magically come together over the week. The fish just seemed to be calling me through the hole in the parchment. My favorite part of working on skin was turning its “flaws” into features.

"The Fish" is finished and available for purchase — contact me, if you're interested.

I've also got a second skin in the studio waiting to become the next book. Just need the time.

  9. The brushstrokes in Liang Qichao’s couplet are sharp, deliberate—each stroke a near-perfect rectangle, unsoftened by flourish. This stele-inspired script reflects a reformer’s vision: clarity as strength, tradition as foundation.

How does the unyielding geometry of these characters shape their authority on the page?

  10. @mass_driver on why they ‘don’t use A I in any of [their] #Design or production processes’.

“When we turn design over to generative A I, we remove the human element from the process. When we ask Mid journey to draw an ox, it does not think of home. Chat G P T will never invent a new #Calligraphy technique, because it has no wrists to feel uncomfortable. A tool that shields us from the friction of the work is compelling, but if we don’t experience the friction, we will never change the work.”
