“Typography is absolutely fundamental to Japanese poster design because writing itself is regarded as an art form. Traditional Japanese calligraphy, or shodō, is something every child learns at school, but mastering it takes decades. Every brushstroke follows established principles — the pressure, the angle, where the brush pauses and how the stroke leaves the paper are all carefully controlled. On many classic film posters, the lettering was created by master calligraphers, so the typography isn’t simply text; it’s an essential part of the artwork.”
