  11. The article decries detachment, criticizing how "we act as if anything sincere or effortful is cringe"—yet detachment is far from a natural stance and itself requires effort, mindfulness, and care (cf. #Buddhism). As such, detachment is not synonymous with apathy; though the author uses those terms interchangeably. Similarly, detachment isn't a "reflex" and it neither "is safe" nor "risks nothing." For example, some people who try it become "vulnerable to embarrassment" due to relative emotional unavailability, maybe leading to social rejection. Indeed, JA Westenberg almost gets close to recognizing that, claiming that detachment makes us "lose the capacity for earnest connection."

Contrary to what JA Westenberg implies in the main, sincerity and detachment aren't opposites. Rather, the opposite of detachment is more like élan—that terrific word the author uses. Furthermore, both detachment and élan might be sincere or might not. Both detachment and élan might come from "conviction" or might not. And both detachment and élan might exude "joy" or might not. Yet for detachment, the conviction or joy could be fairly quiet: like that of taking a long, solitary hike. I believe the key is whether we adopt an attitude of either detachment or élan primarily for show (to influence how others see us, which JA Westenberg wisely opposes doing) or for deeper, non-performative reasons.

WARNING: this reply to https://mastodon.nl/@voorstad/117055607776743115 grew unexpectedly long while writing 😄

I'm posting it here so that it also reaches non-ActivityPub platforms.
View article View summary @Eelco Mulder :mastodon: 🇪🇺 Dogmas are always problematic for me, and I tend to see religion as mostly a set of dogmas.

    Faith and religion

I've always seen faith and religion as two separate things. Faith is personal conviction, religion is someone else's convictions that are forced upon you.

If you haven't seen the (Dutch) film Simon, you should. Other than being a really, really good film, it also has the main character give us this wisdom:

Every form of organized religion is wrong.

I agree. Faith is fine, religion is (mostly) not. Let everybody think for themselves: a "moral compass" should be in your head, not in random ancient texts.

But if the gist of your holy scripture is to be nice to each other, to help those in need and to see all human beings as equal, several serious questions and doubts should pop up in your mind if an openly racist misogynist with a long list of convictions for crimes that also go against the Ten Commandments, says he is a true christian. Is he? And if so, are you?

    What would Jesus do?

Again, I'm an atheist, but I have absolutely no problem with telling people that face a moral question, to ask themselves "what would Jesus do?"

For me, Jesus wasn't an immortal deity who could walk on water, but simply someone who pointed out the same societal problems we see today: inequality, poverty, greed, abuse of power, hypocrisy... He wasn't the first or the last to do that either.

    Creeds on greed

Jesus was crystal clear about greed; this article, "What did Jesus say about greed?", explains it exactly like I see it.

That's pretty much the same as what Buddha teaches us, only the goal to reach is not a god or heaven, but enlightenment.

I like to see myself as a socialist, a concept that is based on the same ideas as those preached by Jesus and Buddha: help each other, and share. Capitalism is the opposite of that: grab what you can.

A true Christian can never also be a capitalist, at least not without an unhealthy dose of hypocrisy.

  17. I WANTED GOD BY FRIDAY 💎

When I was young, I wanted the truth passionately.

    I read all the books.

I listened to all the teachers.

    I really tried to meditate.

I tried to forgive, though it was traditional forgiveness rather than ACIM forgiveness.

I had tried hard to become peaceful.

    Ha!

Sometimes I even became quite good at the practice.

Then pride would enter the field and ravage everything.

    It was not real yet.

I was too busy being young.

    Too hungry.

    Too frightened.

    Too unhappy.

Too caught in the body, the world, sex, food, ambition, approval, and the endless hope that something or someone outside me would finally make life feel complete.

    Preferably by Friday.

Unbeknownst to me, I was trying to get out of life before I had properly lived it.

    That was a mistake.

Young people are not supposed to spend all their time trying to escape the world.

They should be f**king each other.

    Making new art.

    Creating new music.

    Building new things.

    Making old mistakes.

    Loving badly, then better.

    Getting their hearts broken.

Buying furniture that they already know they will regret.

Learning what matters by wasting enormous amounts of time on what does not.

That is practically the entire curriculum.

The practice came later for me.

    Much later.

Not because I finally became spiritually special.

    Because I finally became ready.

    The body changed.

    Appetite changed.

The need to be someone began to loosen its grip.

Life had already had its way with me.

    Repeatedly.

    Profoundly.

    Without asking anybody’s permission.

And now, near the end of this life, looking toward the exit does not feel dramatic or sad.

    There is no white robe.

    No celestial choir.

    No soft lighting.

    It feels simple.

    I am already halfway there.

I may as well breathe consciously and enjoy the view.

  18. ROBINZZ3: THE TRILOGY

I have somehow ended up with three Mastodon accounts.

    All called Robinzz3.

    All looking like me.

    All technically different people.

This is the sort of thing computers do while insisting they are making life easier.

The newest Robin lives at Aus.social, where I have been given 3,000 characters per post.

This is excellent news for me and possibly alarming news for everyone else.

The old Robin has 67 followers.

    The new Robin has four.

And yet the new account is already getting more attention, which suggests follower numbers may be less important than being in the right room.

So I am going to stay here for a while and see what happens.

There will be no dramatic migration ceremony.

    No digital removal van.

No small brass band playing as my followers are transferred across the internet.

For now, the three Robins will simply coexist.

    One active.

    Two increasingly historical.

    A small federation of me.

    One practical detail:

If you followed me on one of the old accounts, you will need to click Follow again here.

Mastodon does not assume that because you followed one Robin, you are ready for all available Robins.

    Probably wise.

Anyway, this is the new account.

    Same man.

    Same breathwork.

    Same opinions.

    More letters.

  20. DREAM BODY

I am enjoying this body more now.

That still feels slightly strange to say.

After years of heaviness, badly fitting clothes, poor balance, and the old post-stroke complications, the body now feels lighter, healthier, and easier to live in.

Even with the hemiplegia, I love it more kindly.

But I also know I am not this.

    That is the interesting bit.

“I am not a body” does not mean I have to despise the body, neglect it, or pretend it is not here.

It means the body does not define me.

It is not my identity, my prison, or my salvation.

While it appears, it can be cared for. Warmed. Dressed. Breathed. Walked. Fed. Rested. Used for kindness.

Fasting and breathwork have not made me more real.

They have simply made the noise less convincing.

The body has stopped arguing so loudly.

So I can enjoy the balance, the health, the clothes that fit, and the quiet pleasure of moving through the day differently.

    That is not body_worship.

It is good housekeeping in the dream.

    Not who I am.

Just the flute the breath is moving through.

  22. When you #meditate long term, your mind changes. You find yourself more grounded and less easily upset. In #Buddhism there is the imagery of a deep lake. The wind disturbs the surface, creating waves for boats floating there. Below the surface, the lake is still and eternally calm. #Meditation takes you below the surface. Open your mind to the universe and you will find peace, tranquility, empathy, compassion, kindness and love. We are all connected. #saha #sahadukkha
