In times of social stress or authoritarian momentum, Tonglen intervenes before ideology, at the level of felt experience.
It trains you to:
- feel fear without becoming cruel
- feel anger without dehumanizing
- feel grief without collapsing
- feel vulnerability without shutting down
This is why tonglen is not passive.
It is anti-brutalization training.
It prevents you from becoming what you oppose.
