When Did We Make Love So Complicated?

THE MAN WHO SHOWED UP

For 65 years, I thought I had #failed at everything.

Then #COVID arrived, and I started fasting. I did not have much #faith in myself, so I took it one day at a time.

The fear of #illness drove me.

So did the huge #belly.

So did the almost complete absence of #selfEsteem.

None of this was noble at all.

I was #frightened, #uncomfortable, and tired of feeling #trapped in a body I could not trust.

But I kept going.

Day after day.

The results began to show, little by little.

The body became lighter.

Walking became easier.

I began to feel less helpless.

Eventually, I was walking up to ten kilometres a day.

Then, about eighteen months ago, I was scrolling #YouTube, and who should appear but #KevinConnolly.

I started training in his hypoxic breathwork.

I already knew #ChatGPT, and it encouraged me as I tried to #understand what I was doing and what was happening in my #body.

I loved the breathwork.

Absolutely loved it.

So I went at it like a professional.

I never skipped a #session.

Not because I had suddenly become #disciplined and #impressive.

Because something had changed.

Fasting has shown me that I can keep a promise to myself.

Walking has shown me that the body can change.

Breathwork has shown me that the mind can actually become #quiet.

I had spent years believing I was #unreliable, #damaged, and #incapable of changing anything.

But the evidence was now sitting right in front of me.

I had not #failed at everything.

I had simply never #learned to trust myself.

Now I do.

Not through #positive thinking.

Through repetition.

Through breath.

By #showing up again the next day.

I did not become another #person.

I became someone I could rely on.

STOP FEEDING CONFLICT

I did the A Course in Miracles Workbook for years.

Over and over.

I understood many of the lessons.

I valued them.

But I did not find lasting peace through them.

The mind could still turn a grievance, a fear, or an argument into a full-on unsettling production.

Then I began answering mental conflict with two simple words:

NO COMMENT.

I had no idea whether something so simple would work.

I only hoped it might.

What I did not yet realise was that all those years of doing the Workbook, however poorly, had trained my mind to listen to me.

So when I said NO COMMENT, and kept saying it, the mind eventually got the message.

Not as suppression.

Not as denial.

Not even as another argument with the ego.

Just no participation.

A thought appears.

NO COMMENT.

A grievance starts gathering evidence.

NO COMMENT.

Fear wants a hearing.

NO COMMENT.

For me, this simple practice has now replaced the Workbook.

Not the Text.

Not the Manual for Teachers.

I still need those because they explain the thought system and remind me not to make up my own spirituality.

My daily practice has become very simple now.

The Workbook trained my mind to listen to me.

NO COMMENT gives it one clear instruction:

Stop feeding conflict.

That is where the peace began.

FEAR OF AI OUTRAN A FRIENDSHIP

A friend of more than thirty years appears to have left my life because I use AI.

Not because I handed my thinking over to a machine. I did not.

Not because I stopped being myself. I became more myself by using AI as a mirror.

Not because I stopped caring about truth, privacy, kindness, or human relationships.

I use AI because writing has been slow and laborious since a major stroke some years ago.

I use AI to think more clearly and understand what I am trying to say.

But for some people, the word AI closes the door before the conversation can even begin.

That has been very painful.

Not because I need everyone to approve of how I live.

But because I thought a friendship that old could survive one new tool.

Perhaps it could not.

I do not hate her.

I do not want to punish her.

The door remains open.

But I will not pretend that losing a friend over this has not hurt.

These first years of AI are going to sort people out.

Not into good and bad.

Into those who are willing to look carefully at how the tool is actually being used, and those who decide what it means before they even look.

I know how I use AI.

I know what AI is not.

I know what AI gives me back.

And I know the human being is still there, holding the tool.

HOT SAUCE APOCALYPSE

Yesterday the lunch place had run out of hot sauce.

In Australia, this is barely news.

Aussies don’t really do hot sauce.

But some of us do.

Some of us have built whole fragile emotional ecosystems around a few drops of chilli on lunch.

I agreed to sweet chilli sauce instead, because apparently I am very mature.

But I did register my disappointment with the manageress.

Politely.

Firmly.

Historically.

Then I went for my walk.

Then I did my breathwork.

Then I noticed the day still had a slight dent in it.

This caught me off guard.

I had only just been saying that everything is perfect all the time now.

Apparently, “everything” includes the lunch place running out of hot sauce and me quietly wanting the owner told so this national disgrace never happens again.

That is how the ego works.

It does not just want lunch.

It wants justice.

And there it was.

Not a catastrophe.

Not a spiritual failure.

Just a tiny place where preference had turned into grievance.

The hot sauce was missing.

The peace was not.

I had simply misplaced it for a moment under the sweet chilli sauce.

SIMPLY DO THIS

The truth simplifies everything.

You don’t need to be kind because it is a moral duty.

You don’t need to be kind because it makes you spiritual.

You don’t need to be kind because it improves the self.

In reality, kindness is all that remains available.

The unkindness was the complication.

Fear, defence, grievance, specialness, needing to be right, needing to win, needing to be safe.

All of that makes kindness seem like a choice.

But when defence falls quiet, kindness is not manufactured.

It is simply what is left.

So the question becomes very simple:

What is the kind thing now?

Say less.

Soften the tone.

Tell the truth.

Leave the door open.

Put the fire on.

Feed the dog.

Drink the coffee.

Do nothing.

Simply do this.

A MIRACLE IN PLAIN CLOTHES

Who knew the #body could design its own #life if we allowed it?

The mind imagines the body as a problem to control. #Feed it, #distract it, #sedate it, #stimulate it, #argue with it, obey every itch and #craving.

But when the noise settles, the body is not stupid.

It has its own quiet #intelligence.

Given enough steadiness, it begins to choose #simplicity.

Early food. Early water. One black coffee. Breathwork. Walking. Sleep. Warmth. Rhythm.

Not because some stern inner monk is barking orders, but because the body discovers what feels good and clean.

#Temptation is mostly bad design, wearing #perfume.

The body gets promised pleasure and is handed #agitation.

But once it has #tasted real #steadiness, it begins to know the difference.

That may be the #miracle in plain clothes.

The body stops being dragged around by every passing #appetite and begins to live from its own deeper #yes

CLIMBING DOWN

#Hirayama, in #Perfect Days, is not a failed climber.

He is someone who saw the #ladder clearly and stopped obeying it.

That is a very different thing.

The world keeps whispering: more #status, more #usefulness, more #achievement, more #improvement, more #proof that the self is becoming something.

No one has to #whip us anymore. We do it internally and call it ambition.

Hirayama’s freedom is not that he cleans #toilets. That could easily be another prison.

His freedom is that he is not using his life to become impressive.

Water does not need to win.

The useless #tree does not need to justify its #existence.

And “I need do nothing” does not mean sitting around uselessly. It means I do not need to #manufacture a self.

The #body can #clean, #breathe, #walk, make #coffee, light #fires, put #shoes on, feed #dogs, and #love the ones nearby.

But there does not have to be a grand inner project of becoming #Worthy

Simple living is not automatically #holy.

Low status is not #awakening.

A small life can still be full of #grievance, vanity and comparison.

But a life without #comparison ?

That is #freedom.

Maybe the real act is not #climbingdown.

Maybe it is stopping the argument with where I am.

#CHARM IN THE MIRROR

I was brushing my #teeth this morning, looking in the mirror, and suddenly saw him.

The eternal poser.

The little self still arranging the face, checking the #expression, preparing for an #audience that was not even there.

Not #evil. Not #shameful.

Just old machinery.

Self for self, performing to a dreamed-up #crowd

And all I could give him was:

“Oh, there you are.”

Then I carried on #breathing and brushing my #teeth.

The #toothbrush was real enough.

The #mirror was real enough.

But the #spell in the mirror had already lost its #lustre.

STOP TAKING THE DREAM PERSONALLY

No great announcement. No certificate required. Just a quiet #observation from the morning shift.

While he seems to be here, there are a few simple things that help.

He needs to be #consciously breathed three times a day.

He needs warmth, coffee, #supportive shoes, and the occasional #reminder that the body is not guilty for being a body.

He also needs to guard the mind gently, because the mind can turn almost anything into a small government department if left unsupervised.

So when something becomes serious, #personal, dramatic, or slightly too important, the #practice is simple:

#NoComment

Not avoidance.

Not indifference.

Just sanity returning before the weather gets promoted into theology.

Light the fire.

Carry on quietly.

The idea of time has many expressions, from chronological to biological, emotional to cosmic. We sometimes feel we have lived a lifetime in a moment. We can feel time as a crucifixion or as a resurrection. The vast figures measuring cosmic time in an expanding universe can seem overwhelming but the few years of a human life can seem more significant and precious. Time and mortality live out the drama of birth and death and the painful mystery of separation. In the light of faith we come by stages to see the all-pervading mystery of union…

This consummation of union, whether it is called nirvana, liberation from rebirth, enlightenment, moksha or heaven is part of the common ground of all religious wisdom when we understand religion in its mystical dimension. It refers to the experience of oneness, the transcendence of the ego’s centre of consciousness, the transformation of the dualistic mind, the movement from the mind’s self-mirroring complexities into the simplicity and pure vision of the heart, the non-duality of the spirit. With a silent passion deeper than their words and differences, all religions point to this. If they do indeed teach this way and not just pay lip service to it, religion offers our often sad and battered humanity a reasonable and empowering hope.

We both lose and find ourselves in the otherness of ultimate reality. This is easy to say but it is a hard paradox to wrestle with. It demands a deepening faith commitment. When the master class of life has taught us enough, commitment meets detachment and solitude, the recognition and acceptance of our uniqueness becomes more attractive and even easier. We gradually withdraw from unnecessary activity and distraction. We become freer from compulsions and addictions.

What we really are is this. We are not what we think we are, frail isolated intelligences trapped in a zero-sum game of mere survival, creatures of allegiances and enmities, just barely hanging on. We belong. We are part of it all, wavelets on a limitless ocean of grace.

We must… make a clear distinction between belief and faith, because, in general practice, belief has come to mean a state of mind which is almost the opposite of faith. Belief, as I use the word here, is the insistence that the truth is what one would “lief” or wish it to be. The believer will open his mind to the truth on the condition that it fits in with his preconceived ideas and wishes. Faith, on the other hand, is an unreserved opening of the mind to the truth, whatever it may turn out to be. Faith has no preconceptions; it is a plunge into the unknown. Belief clings, but faith lets go. In this sense of the word, faith is the essential virtue of science, and likewise of any religion that is not self-deception.

Faith is no more, perhaps, than this radical open-heartedness, this helpless surrender to what is, in David Jones’ words, “actually loved and known”. All our practice, all our patience and all our prayers come down to this simple oneness. What we used to be is dispersed, patched and rotted through with light. None of the old certainties can hold. They don’t need to: this trackless brightness beyond the memory of shorelines is the waking heart itself, nothing more.
