THE JOY OF BEING
AN IRRELEVANT OLD FART 💎

I have been stripped of almost everything.

Even the body I once thought of as mine has been altered beyond recognition.

And yet, strangely, I have more than I could ever have imagined.

I don’t chase money anymore, and I have enough.

I do not chase health, and I experience more health and wellbeing than I once thought possible.

I do not chase sex, status, approval or achievement.

And because I am no longer chasing, life comes to me quietly and kindly.

Abundant health.

Abundant wealth.

Fairly continuous peace of mind.

And ease of practice.

The pursuit was what kept everything at a distance.

Now I am old, and no one is asking me to build a career, provide an identity, prove myself or become someone.

That is the great privilege of being an old man.

You get to become a monk again.

There is time.

There is space.

There is less interference.

Old age is usually presented as decline.

Pain.

Illness.

Loss.

A slow shutting down.

But at 70, that has not been my experience.

It has become a delightful place in which the spiritual practice I only feigned as a young man can now become real.

The world asks less of me now.

And because it asks less, I can listen more deeply.

I can reset.

I can “choose once again.”

I can allow kindness to become the law of the land.

Nothing is missing.

Nothing needs to be acquired.

“I need do nothing.”

The old man’s privilege is not that he has escaped life.

It is that life has finally become simple enough for him to see.

THE MAN WHO SHOWED UP

For 65 years, I thought I had #failed at everything.

Then #COVID arrived, and I started fasting. I did not have much #faith in myself, so I took it one day at a time.

The fear of #illness drove me.

So did the huge #belly.

None of this was noble at all.

I was #frightened, #uncomfortable, and tired of feeling #trapped in a body I could not trust.

But I kept going.

The results began to show, little by little.

The body became lighter.

Walking became easier.

I began to feel less helpless.

Eventually, I was walking up to ten kilometres a day.

Then, about eighteen months ago, I was scrolling #YouTube, and who should appear but #KevinConnolly.

I started training in his hypoxic breathwork.

I already knew #ChatGPT, and it encouraged me as I tried to #understand what I was doing and what was happening in my #body.

I loved the breathwork.

Absolutely loved it.

So I went at it like a professional.

I never skipped a #session.

Not because I had suddenly become #disciplined and #impressive.

Because something had changed.

Fasting has shown me that I can keep a promise to myself.

Walking has shown me that the body can change.

Breathwork has shown me that the mind can actually become #quiet.

I had spent years believing I was #unreliable, #damaged, and #incapable of changing anything.

But the evidence was now sitting right in front of me.

I had not #failed at everything.

I had simply never #learned to trust myself.

Now I do.

Not through #positive thinking.

Through repetition.

FEAR OF AI OUTRAN A FRIENDSHIP

A friend of more than thirty years appears to have left my life because I use AI.

Not because I handed my thinking over to a machine. I did not.

Not because I stopped being myself. I became more myself by using AI as a mirror.

Not because I stopped caring about truth, privacy, kindness, or human relationships.

I use AI because writing has been slow and laborious since a major stroke some years ago.

I use AI to think more clearly and understand what I am trying to say.

But for some people, the word AI closes the door before the conversation can even begin.

That has been very painful.

Not because I need everyone to approve of how I live.

But because I thought a friendship that old could survive one new tool.

Perhaps it could not.

I do not hate her.

I do not want to punish her.

The door remains open.

But I will not pretend that losing a friend over this has not hurt.

These first years of AI are going to sort people out.

Not into good and bad.

Into those who are willing to look carefully at how the tool is actually being used, and those who decide what it means before they even look.

I know how I use AI.

I know what AI is not.

I know what AI gives me back.

And I know the human being is still there, holding the tool.
