Hello from Japan! Going through a bit of a busy stretch, but trying to relax with a set of purification fountains at temples and shrines in the Tokyo area. Often, the faucets are dragon-shaped, and it is thought that using ‘water that flows from the dragon god's mouth’ enhances the cleansing effect.

Many people are familiar with the famous Daibutsu (Big Buddha) statues in Kamakura, Nara and Hyogo (Kobe). But did you know that there is also a “Tokyo Daibutsu”at Joren-ji Temple in Itabashi Ward? At 13 meters tall, it is actually the third-largest in Japan behind Nara and Kamakura. While the Buddha statue is relatively new (1977), the temple dates back around 500 years.

There is a temple called Nanzo-in (南蔵院) in my immediate neighborhood here in Tokyo - but there is a far more famous temple of the same name in Sasaguri, Fukuoka. It is notable for its reclining Buddha statue, said to be the world's largest bronze statue at 41 meters long and 11 meters high. More than 1 million people visit every year.

Kawasaki Daishi is a prominent temple in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Founded in 1128, its main hall was reconstructed in the late 1950s, and other structures as recently as in the 1970s and 1980s, after destruction during WW2.

Temple staff rushing to serve Green Tea and Japanese Sweets at Hosenin Temple (宝泉院) in the beautiful Ōhara area of Northern Kyoto, Japan.

Passing my local temple, Nanzōin (南蔵院), on the way back from work this evening, I noticed that it was still open which is usually not the case after 6 PM. So I was able to enter and enjoy the quiet mood at dusk for a few minutes. There were also still some cherry blossoms left around an adjacent building.

Cherry blossoms at Tōkōji Temple in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. I regularly come back to this quiet image as it makes me remember the timeless and calming serenity that I felt during my visit. The temple was founded in 1691, and is located within the tranquil woods east of downtown Hagi.

In the last part of our visit to Takao, one hour north of Kyoto, we reach Kosan-ji Temple (sometimes also written as Kozan-ji). Wrapping up our visit there, we notice that (a) buses back to Kyoto aren’t that frequent and (b) we’ve gotten quite hungry from all the climbing - so we find a local restaurant with a nice view of the Kiyotaki River, and have a bowl of noodles 🍜

Adding on to yesterday’s post, here are a few more photos from Takahata Fudoson Kongoji, a temple located on the western outskirts of Tokyo in Hino. In addition to a beautiful five-storied pagoda, the temple also features a pleasant hiking course through a forest, with 88 Jizō statues located along the trail.
