  1. 🎓Kennin-ji (建仁時) = 'Gakumon-zura' (学問面) 'The Face of scholarship'.

⚔️Nanzen-ji (南禅寺) = 'Buke-zura' (武家面) 'The Face of Warriors' - many daimyō took the tonsure, provided financial support, and helped found sub-temples here.

  2. Most of Kyōto's Rinzai temple complexes are known by similar nicknames according to what they were/are famed for...

🧮Myōshin-ji (妙心寺) = 'Soroban-zura' (算盤面), 'The Face of Abacus' (frugal accounting, austere conditions, strict regulations).

  3. 📿TEMPLE OF TEAHOUSES🍵

Ryōgen-in's (龍源院) 'Tōtekiko' (東滴壺) is considered by many to be the smallest rock garden in Japan.
Designed in 1958 by Nabeshima Gakushō (鍋島岳生), it was inspired by the zen saying "the harder a stone is thrown in, the bigger the ripples".

  4. What does Zen have to do with grief and constipation? Quite a lot, as it turns out. Check our review on Nao Yoshigai's wonderfully strange "Masayume." japantimes.co.jp/culture/2026/ #culture #film #japanesefilm #naoyoshigai #zen #kyoto

#Japan

  7. Happy Sunday from Japan! Hope all my fellow Tokyoites are doing fine after last night’s strong jolt 🫨. Today’s post is some hopefully calming film photography of Togetsukyo Brigde in Arashiyama, Kyoto.

  9. Today's #digitaldetox was #kyoto #botanicalgarden again. I particularly like this picture. It's called "heron grass" (鷺草), and indeed the picture looks to me like white herons flying in the morning fog over a river.

  10. Turned 77 - wish me luck! Our sons and exuberant five-year-old granddaughter visited us from Tōkyō 💖. We stayed over in Kyōto again to stay cool (photos of temples: Higashi Honganji and Tōji).

  12. A pencil drawing of a Japanese folding door with Japanese sandals in Kyoto, Japan, in Strathmore 5.5x8.5 sketchbook. I made this drawing last weekend for relaxation of my insomnia

  13. 'Tobari' can mean to cover or conceal something, so 'kiri-no-tobari' conjures up the image of a beautiful covering, such as mist at dawn, or clouds at sunset.

  14. On the way to work I saw a few dayflowers growing beside the path.

Just a gentle rub and the petals melt into an almost purplish blue ink.

  15. Inspired by Heian period gardens, kikyō offer the only real colour within the "Genji-no-tei" (源氏庭).
White gravel is shaped into a pattern known as 'Genji Kumogata' (源氏雲形), imitating the gold clouds seen on "The Tale of Genji" scrolls.

  16. Rozan-ji (盧山寺) was originally founded at the southern foot of Funaoka-yama (船岡山) in 938 by Ryōgen (良源/慈恵大師). Its first incarnation was known as Yogan Kongō-in (與願金剛院).
It remains the head temple of the Enjō School of the Tendai sect (圓浄宗).

  17. Kanesuke's residence, 'Tsutsumi-tei' (堤第 'Pavilion on the Riverbank'), was later inherited by Murasaki's father, Fujiwara-no-Tametoki (藤原為時 ?-1029).
Born at the villa, it seems probable that Murasaki spent most of her life (even when married) at the house.
