Um, so I decided that my food rants and recs probably need a single home: https://jom.popagandhi.com/about/
You can also follow @[email protected] (altho you will also get my photography there, but I don't mind)
So it will be a food + film photos feed!
This is diff from my food newsletter which is a bit more long form; I'm also going to try to put out short videos there, and also figure out how to let people subscribe to categories (e.g. 'bay area', 'singapore', ' recipes')

CW: Hantavirus, sexisme

Voilà, voilà, ladies and gentlemen.
#sexisme"A French woman who tested positive for hantavirus after she was evacuated from a cruise ship reported symptoms to doctors onboard but was told it was probably just anxiety, the Spanish health minister has said.
Javier Padilla Bernáldez said the woman, who had been travelling on the ship at the centre of a deadly hantavirus outbreak, had been suffering flu-like symptoms but they appeared to be getting better and she did not have a fever. The World Health Organization later said the woman was in a “very critical” condition."

These guys have set up a business importing fresh durian into Australia. It is indeed an acquired taste, but good luck to them.
"Chong and friend Jerry Fong agreed something must be done, so they set up Durian Lah, a side gig that puts them at the experimental edge of Australia’s minuscule durian game.
'“We don’t want to do frozen because you can buy it from anywhere,” Chong says. “We want the fresh ones. That’s what people are craving.”
'The business is so new it hasn’t even received its first shipment (durian season is just starting in Malaysia), but the idea is to fly in fresh durian pulp on overnight flights from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne.
'Durians have an exceedingly short – and sensitive – shelf life, so customers must then make haste to Durian Lah warehouses in Vermont and Preston to collect their orders.'

TSA at Atlanta airport (domestic terminal): 20 min, at 5am this morning. Pretty long line but moved quickly, and airport was well laid out and staff were efficient.
And yes, ICE is working the passports / ID station. (I made it, foreign passport, no questions)

A person who was made to undergo Chinese political re-education as part of China’s ongoing, undeniable genocide
Built a propaganda tracker tracking Chinese state media and terms. They noticed how, during the re-education program, language was shifting: he was no longer Chinese Mongolian, he was from the ‘northern frontier’.
This work documents and tracks how quickly terms shift through Chinese state media

Taking a series of trains, buses and fun facts about them
1. Civic Center, San Francisco to MacArthur, Oakland
Fun fact: BART uses the broad gauge, same as Indian Railways (another train system I know super well)

EDIT: adding prices as a record. This was $4.80 -
Yesterday, I got to take a visiting Mastodon mutual to bao, the dimsum restaurant on Valencia St in the Mission.
It is one of very few places where you can have dimsum for dinner (sit down dimsum is typically a breakfast / brunch thing).
The standard was as good as any other high quality dimsum place I like. They have a much smaller menu compared to a traditional dimsum hall, but large for a Chinese restaurant in the Mission. They have all of the classics.
I would try everything there except the xlb (I’m picky and don’t think Cantonese people do it well). The standard dimsum classics (har gow, siu mai, turnip cake, woo kok) were all good.
They have plenty of veg options as well, well marked on the menu.
