Edit: I have been helped! Librarians are amazing.
If any academics or librarians have full-text access to the following article, I'd be grateful for a copy to read! Please reply to this post and I can drop my work email. (I'm a Texas-based academic librarian.) <3

💁🏻♀️ TIL: 📝📊 The #SAT was first administered to 8,000 students in June 1926, born from #WorldWarI #military I.Q. tests designed by #Princeton psychologist and eugenicist Carl Brigham.
Now taken by two million #students annually, fewer than 10% of U.S. #colleges require it for fall 2026 admissions, a shift accelerated by the #Covid #pandemic and long standing debates about what the test actually measures. The article traces the test’s #evolution from a tool that helped break into the old boys’ network of elite colleges to an #exam whose scores strongly correlate with family #income.

#HigherEd figures from #Duke, #Harvard , #UCLA & #Yale reveàled as chums amongst #EpsteinFiles in latest doc drop.
#DOJ released a new batch of 3 million pages from #JeffreyEpstein case, revealing correspondence with prominent figures at top tier schools even after his 2008 conviction with name-drops including figures from #Kinsey Institute having lunch with Epstein and a former Israeli PM.
Latest doc dump includes over a half dozen top #academics in trove, prompting some #Edu institutional embarrassment.
Amongst those shown to have years of sporadic contacts are a prominent #Connecticut school's computer science professor David Gelernter, who was infamously injured after being targeted by #Unabomber Ted Kacynski, but later in life crafted correspondence casually chatting with the convicted sex offender regarding female students on campus he had working for him.
A controversial Duke "behavioral economics" professor named David Ariely who wrote an advice column in #WSJ for a decade is mentioned 636x, although he had previously confirmed only two meetings with Epstein, despite documents that now show at least seven personal interactions.
Others newly named include some top Harvard donors and academics along with those previously mentioned such as former #SocialSciences dean Stephen M. Kosslyn, "Evolution Center" director Martin Nowak and #LarrySummers.
#Florida police first began investigating #Epstein in March 2005 after a 14-year-old girl reported being molested at his home not far from Mar-A-Lago. Eventuallly arrested after a probe in 2006, he pleaded guilty to lesser prostitution charges through a non-prosecution agreement arranged by future #Drumpf admin official Alex Acosta in June 2008. By mid 2019, under add'l media scrutiny, #Epstein himself was found dead in a detention cell in #Federal custody while awaiting trial on new sex #trafficking charges.

If you're following the #UNL #statistics` saga (proposed for elimination based on bad stats), you might find the seminar we gave yesterday interesting...

It was weird to rail against someone for an hour, but strangely cathartic, and the #datavis seems to have been effective?
All #academics should be aware of the absolute BS that administration can create with perfectly reasonable sounding #data, #stats, and #metrics

It's only shortly past 8 in the morning, but I need to #vent.
I just overheard a new #tenure track assistant #professor talk about how they got there.
In a nutshell, they haven't left the department since their master studies and stumbled into the tenure process by accident.I am (kinda) happy for them, but I am also so incredibly fucking jealous!
I have switched not only university but country after every degree/job, so by now I live in country number 5 since starting by studies.
The longest I've been in the same country was during my #PhD plus pandemic and unemployment for over a year.Especially older #academics don't seem to understand this, because whenever I mention any of this I encounter completely blank stares. Note, I'm in a department where most senior staff is local and celebrating 15-35+ years at the same employer.
I'm in my mid-30, I don't want to move every few years when my temporary contract ends.
I want to be able to plan more than 1-2 years at a time.I absolutely love doing #research, but I hate so many aspects of #academic culture or what has been normalized over the years for #AcademicLife.
I plan on staying in #academia despite of it.#Rant over, time to calm down and sip my tea.

by Max Matza, 3/27/2025
"US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order targeting the Smithsonian Institution, which operates more than 20 museums and research centres visited by millions yearly in Washington DC and New York City.
"The order directs the vice-president to 'eliminate improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology' from the institute's museums, centres and the National Zoo in Washington.
"It also directs the interior secretary to restore federal properties, including parks, memorials and statues, which 'have been improperly removed or changed in the last five years to perpetuate a false revision of history'.
"The move is part of Trump's effort to shape American culture, in addition to politics."

Lawrence W. Britt: 14 Characteristics of #Fascism
[Unattributed, but based on the writings of #UmbertoEco]
"#Historian #LawrenceBritt studied the fascist regimes of #Hitler (Germany), #Mussolini (Italy), #Franco (Spain), #Suharto (Indonesia), and #Pinochet (Chile) and found they had 14 elements in common. He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism.
1. Powerful and Continuing #Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of #patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. #Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of #HumanRights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, and long incarcerations of prisoners.3. Identification of #Enemies / #Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: #racial, #ethnic or #religious #minorities; #liberals; #communists; #socialists, #terrorists…4. Supremacy of the #Military
Even when there are widespread #domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.5. Rampant #Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional #gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to #abortion is high, as is #homophobia and anti-#gay legislation.6. Controlled #MassMedia
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation or by sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Government #censorship and #secrecy especially in war time, are very common.7. Obsession with #NationalSecurity
Fear of hostile foreign powers is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.8. #Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.9. Protection of #Corporate Power
The #industrial and business #aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.10. Suppression of #Labor Power
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor #unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.11. Disdain for #Intellectuals and the #Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to #HigherEducation and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other #academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.12. Obsession with #Crime and #Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the #police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego #CivilLiberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.13. Rampant #Cronyism and #Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.14. #FraudulentElections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by #SmearCampaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control #voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. This post is a summary of Fascism, Anyone? by Lawrence W. Britt published in 2003 by Free Inquiry magazine."
