"When I tell people I’m a nonobservant #Orthodox #Jew, there is usually a small pause, followed by a look that says: Pick one. I understand it. The phrase sounds like a hedge, or like someone claiming a title he hasn’t earned. But I don’t think it’s a contradiction.
It helps to start with where this came from, because it didn’t come from childhood. Until a few years ago, I wasn’t curious about any of it. I was #secular and, on some subjects, actively hostile to religion. What changed was #Oct7, 2023, and then a semester when I was honored to be associated with #Yeshiva University. I came away wanting to know more than I did, and I’ve been picking at that ever since.
I should be clear about the scale of it: I am not a learned man in the #Jewish sense of that word. If you quoted a passage at me, there’s a good chance I wouldn’t recognize it. What I do is modest and improvised."

Not typically a fan of Rabbi Ruttenberg, but this is an interesting, provocative thought-piece.
"Nobody would think twice about demanding a #reasonableaccommodation if #corporations asked #Jews to start violating #Shabbat or partaking of the #pork BBQ at the #company retreat against their own practice. And while I would not demand that every #Jew request such an #accommodation (for Shabbat or keeping #kosher), they should absolutely have that option available, even if their #religious practice is a work in progress. So too, here.
And despite seeing many people (including religious Jews!) eliding the moral and religious issues around #AI because "that train has already left the station," we should make choices based on whether they are right or wrong. Also, it's a fallacy: Movements grow from dissent."

AIPAC Wants #Democrats to Back Israel. Instead, They’re Turning on AIPAC.
Once the guardian of the bipartisan pro-Israel consensus, it is now a polarizing force in the party.

June 12, 2026When Brad Lander opened his #Democratic primary bid for #NY 10th Congressional District late last year, he made a promise that would once have meant political suicide: He would not do #AIPAC’s bidding” in Washington.
Now the June 23 primary is almost here, and AIPAC has been a recurring theme throughout the campaign. A progressive #Jew and self-described liberal #Zionist, Lander challenged his opponent, the pro-#Israel incumbent #DanGoldman, to take a “people’s pledge” to limit money from #SuperPACs. He has sent a steady stream of text and email blasts comparing AIPAC with Wall Street and crypto — a new, unholy trinity of corrupting influences in democratic politics.
