The essays collected in the new volume, his third #book, reference weekly Torah portions, the holidays, Jewish life and contemporary events. Together, they explore what it means to live as a Jew in a complicated world and why #Jewish identity should be a source of strength rather than something to conceal.
The book’s title comes from one of its essays, but as #RabbiSteinmetz writes in the preface, it reflects the message of the entire collection: “Our mission is to carry with pride #Judaism’s message to humanity.”
That message has taken on particular urgency in Rabbi Steinmetz’s work in #NewYork."

There's actually a very active frum fitness scene.

That may sound odd, because #Judaism is not a culture of physical vanity. We do not worship the body, glorify muscle, or measure human worth by outward appearance. The #Torah’s ideal is not the #athlete in the stadium, but the #Jew who lives with #faith, discipline, humility, and a sense of higher purpose.
And yet, somewhere along the way, many of us seem to have confused rejecting vanity with neglecting #health.

"In May 1818, #MordecaiManuelNoah, a prominent #Jew of his time and a member of the #Madison administration, delivered a discourse on #Jewish #history on the occasion of a #synagogue consecration. One man read #Noah’s words with interest, and took pen to paper to say so.
“Your sect by its sufferings has furnished a remarkable proof of the universal spirit of #religious #intolerance,” the correspondent noted, in elegant cursive. “Our laws have applied the only antidote to this vice, protecting our religious, as they do our civil, rights by putting them all on equal footing. But more remains to be done, for although we are free by the law, we are not so in practice.”
The letter’s author was #ThomasJefferson. 200 years later, there’s still work to do.

June 15, 2025"When I knew I had to do something, anything, about the war crimes in #Gaza (I was haunted by my lifelong grief and outrage that no-one, no-one, no-one stood up for us when we were being annihilated in Europe) I was immediately attacked online by right-wing Jews. The usual condescending reproaches and violent insults were trotted out: I was giving aid to our enemies; I was spreading a “blood libel”; I was a #Jew-hater; I was “pro-rape”. None of these insults could touch me because I knew how ludicrously false they were. As painful as it is to lose cherished friends, I asked myself: Is this intense social pressure why so very few Germans stood up against the Nazis?"
