Los diarios también confirman que Himmler visitó personalmente numerosos campos de concentración y exterminio.

Acudía para supervisar el funcionamiento del sistema, comprobar la eficacia de las instalaciones y mantener reuniones con los responsables de las SS.

Entre los lugares que inspeccionó estuvieron Dachau, Auschwitz y otros complejos del sistema concentracionario nazi.

En una de sus visitas presenció una ejecución y una operación de exterminio mediante gas.
Según los testimonios conservados, la escena le produjo un evidente malestar físico, llegando incluso a vomitar.
Sin embargo, aquello no le hizo cuestionar el sistema.
Al contrario, continuó perfeccionándolo y defendiendo su funcionamiento.

Lo verdaderamente perturbador es que, tras aquellas inspecciones, las agendas muestran cómo continuaba su jornada asistiendo a almuerzos oficiales, reuniones o meriendas con oficiales de las SS como si nada hubiera ocurrido.

Una crueldad meticulosamente organizada

Entre las anotaciones también aparecen instrucciones destinadas a aumentar la brutalidad dentro de los campos.

Una de las más conocidas consistía en entrenar perros de las SS para que fueran capaces de atacar con extrema violencia a los prisioneros que intentaran escapar o rebelarse.

No se trataba únicamente de impedir fugas.

El terror formaba parte del propio sistema.

La violencia debía servir también para deshumanizar completamente a las víctimas y mantener sometidos a los supervivientes.

Cuando Alemania se derrumbó en mayo de 1945, Himmler comprendió que el final era inevitable.

Intentó negociar con los Aliados occidentales sin el conocimiento de Hitler, esperando obtener un trato favorable.

Cuando Hitler descubrió la maniobra lo consideró un traidor y ordenó expulsarlo de todas sus responsabilidades.

Tras el suicidio de Hitler el 30 de abril de 1945, Himmler trató de escapar.

Se afeitó parcialmente el bigote, utilizó documentación falsa a nombre de Heinrich Hitzinger y se disfrazó como un simple sargento de la policía militar alemana.

Su plan duró muy poco.

El 21 de mayo de 1945 fue detenido por soldados británicos cerca de Bremervörde.
Dos días después fue trasladado a un centro de interrogatorios en Lüneburg.

Durante el reconocimiento médico, el 23 de mayo de 1945, un doctor británico descubrió que escondía algo en la boca.

Antes de que pudieran impedírselo, Himmler mordió una pequeña cápsula de cianuro de potasio que llevaba oculta entre los dientes.

Murió en apenas unos minutos.

Tenía 44 años.

Nunca llegó a sentarse en el banquillo de los acusados durante los Juicios de Núremberg.

Los diarios de Heinrich Himmler son hoy uno de los documentos más inquietantes conservados sobre el Tercer Reich.

No porque revelen nuevos crímenes —la magnitud del Holocausto ya era conocida—, sino porque muestran hasta qué punto una persona podía combinar una vida aparentemente normal con la planificación diaria de asesinatos masivos.

En una misma página podía aparecer una llamada cariñosa a su hija, una consulta médica, una comida con oficiales... y la firma que enviaba a cientos o miles de personas a la muerte.

Esa mezcla de rutina doméstica y exterminio organizado es, para muchos historiadores, una de las pruebas más estremecedoras de cómo la burocracia puede convertirse en un instrumento del horror cuando desaparecen por completo la ética y la humanidad.
