Medicare: From 1965 to Part D
Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law in 1965, creating health insurance for Americans 65 and older through Part A hospital coverage and Part B medical coverage. Congress extended eligibility to certain disabled people in 1972. The 2003 Medicare Modernization Act added Part D prescription-drug coverage, which began in 2006. Medicare remains public insurance, though beneficiaries may receive benefits through private Medicare Advantage plans. #Medicare
