  1. Automation and repression — why the two go hand in hand
    Revolts, triggered by inequality

    * "It's taxes or pitchforks!"
"This is the real underlying threat posed by automation: tremendous social upheaval, public unrest, and political collapse stemming from widespread unemployment and grotesque inequality."

"More automation will require more redistribution to cushion the disruptive effects of automation, so as a country automates more, the tax burden will keep increasing on "capitalists"

Acemoglu, Shadmehr and Gitmez "have modelled how workers would try to coordinate in an uprising, and how a capitalist state would try to prevent an uprising occurring, in an environment in which automation and inequality are increasing."

"They say the novel finding of their paper is that automation and repression complement and reinforce each other...The economy will ultimately converge to repression and the 'pitchforks' will be met with 'guns' from the capitalist state". >>
    abc.net.au/news/2026-08-26/aut

    * "We characterize the trade-off between the regulation of automation, redistribution and repression. Our main result is a complementarity between automation and repression. We show that, starting in a democracy, capital accumulation and thus greater automation encourages the capitalists to support a coup against democracy and set up a repressive system." >>

  2. @2legged It is absolutely no surprise to me at all that #Labour, under both Starmer & #Burnham, has no plans for #redistribution of #income & #wealth, #reduction in income & wealth #inequality or increased #taxation of the #rich, whereas they DO have plans, some of which they've already implemented, for #cuts in #social #spending & #socialsecurity #benefits, especially for the #disabled.

  3. Opaque Automated Nightmares

    * "Greens senator accuses Labor of backing gas industry and billionaires over ‘disabled people and our families’. Steele-John says:"

"Shame on you. You betray not only this community, but the national character. You will be condemned by history. The blood and the lives of those who will suffer and die will be on your hands, and will live in your consciences forever."

"And come the next election, we will consider what to do with our votes, and we will remember, who backed us up, who fought our corner in this moment, and who decided to turn away … We will ensure that every single life, every single cooked decision. Every single automated nightmare, created by this bill, is laid directly at your door." >>

    * Inside the aged care algorithm deciding support for older Australians

"The last time 96-year-old Audrey Staniland was assessed for in-home aged care funding was with a human clinician more than a decade ago...A "classification algorithm" would be deciding the outcome, with the clinician unable to change it."

"The algorithm was introduced by the government to ensure consistent funding because it said some assessors were over-funding elderly people, leading to a surplus of $4 billion in unspent funds."

"Private consultants designed the original algorithm, but the version used today was finalised and validated by public servants in the Department of Health and Ageing."

"...At Senate estimates, under questioning by the Coalition, Greens and independent senator David Pocock, the department admitted there had been no live trial of the final algorithm and it was unable to name any expert clinicians who validated it." >>

  4. The Revolutionary Charter for establishing people’s power (2023) is the output of a radically participatory and democratic process.
Eye opening video by @Ayman: youtu.be/ISyFtL2hq1Q

"Placing our focus on criminal justice alone may allow for some individuals to be punished for their crimes against society but will leave unharmed the same hegemony and oppression regimes who are behind violence and atrocities."

  5. A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries
    A habitable world is possible

"The Global Justice Report is part of a broader international agenda for planetary habitability, social justice, and reform of the global financial architecture."

"The Global Justice Project attempts to set out a new vision for global progress in the 21st century: grounding human development and equality in planetary habitability. It explores the conditions under which the world could move toward this horizon and traces an economically and ecologically consistent transition path from 2026 to 2100." >>

    Summary: The Global Justice Report
A Plan for Equality & Prosperity Within Planetary Boundaries
"It is possible to reconcile planetary habitability and high well-being for all, but only if the transformation rests on three pillars simultaneously. Fast decarbonization of energy systems is necessary. But we also need a major shift toward sufficiency – understood as a sharp reduction in labour hours and material footprint and large changes in consumption patterns, food habits, land use, and forest cover. In addition, neither decarbonization nor sufficiency can be financed and politically sustained without a drastic reduction in inequality of income, wealth and power, both between countries and within them. The compression of global inequality is not only compatible with deep decarbonization; it is a necessary condition for shared prosperity on a finite planet." >>

  6. What it really is is an economy with mostly one-on-one jobs, which have no possibility of really scaling, so you’d better hope everyone is getting great wages so they can pay you too, and the taxes are paid by the folks who have 2B or so potential customers. #redistribution #inequality

  7. Trump and Netanyahu spent a Washington photo op arguing over who is israel’s “number one friend.” The same week, israeli jets destroyed a mosque and displacement tents in Gaza City, killing one Palestinian and wounding a dozen more, under a ceasefire both men call a diplomatic win. The people living under that same imperial weight are named and reachable in this week’s list below. Give directly.

  9. People think #inequality favours power, but in fact it just creates mayhem and volatility. #Regulation creates stability, including of power.

What happened the last time we had such high ≠ was eventually enough rich got sick of mayhem (eg WWs, stockmarket crashes) & let us ramp up #redistribution.

  10. @ZackPolanski Only too true - it used to believe in #redistribution of #income & #wealth from the #rich to the #poor, & in greater #equality & #socialjustice. Now it's in thrall to the wealthiest in our #society, & won't increase #taxes on them. Instead, they propose #cuts in #social #spending to pay for more spending on "defence". They make me sick!
