  2. Abolish All International Orders

The phrase “International Order” begs the question of whether nations should be the foundation of global society. It is founded on an assumption that dates back only to WWI and the Paris Peace conference in 1919; the assumption that the world should be divided up into territories based on the outcomes of wars, possibly in the different past, and of the processes which had put rulers in charge of the people who lived in those territories.

Those rulers, regardless of the degree to which they have popular support, all claim “sovereignty”. Ostensibly on behalf of their country, but in practice on their own behalf, to make them less accountable outside the country.

On the face of it, this is absurd. There is no logic to it, other than “we’re in charge, suck it up”.

The results speak for themselves. It has resulted in continuous war and even more in the continuous development of every more dangerous weapons; we all know the phrase “arms race” but seem to consider it to be inevitable. Not only are these weapons capable of destroying us all if widely used, the military industrial complexes that support them use a lot of humanity’s collective productive capacity, which could be used to provide better shelter, food and healthcare.

It is destroying our ability to slow climate change, because the rulers of countries with fossil fuel “reserves” refuse to acknowledge that they are the source of the climate disaster which is causing more harm every year, mostly to low–income countries.

Starting in the United States, spreading to other countries, there are some people who claim to be “sovereign citizens” who claim not to be bound by laws. It is one flavour of far-right ideology. The legal systems of the countries in which they live pay no regard to their claims. But why, then, should countries be sovereign? Should they too not be bound by international law? Should we not have global systems that constrain what they do, so that using violence outside their boundaries is forbidden except in self defence? So that causing storms, drought, heatwaves and fires in other countries by excess emissions of greenhouse gases is forbidden?

What logic says that these artificial, arbitrary constructs should be sovereign, that does not say that their residents—real people—should also be sovereign? I have never seen an attempt at an explanation, just the claims that “we” should not be taking orders from foreigners, as if somehow binding treaties between groups of people are a bad idea. As if we shouldn’t commit to following rules like not cooking the planet, murdering each other en masse or using more than a fair share of limited resources.
