You can practice critical thinking while watching competition reality shows. This can be a good excise in awareness of your own biases, cognitive dissonance, and how easily you can be manipulated through storytelling.
1. First, pick your favorite competitors across the first couple of episodes.
Try to understand your own criteria for why they're your favorites, so you can adjust if they reveal new parts of themselves or new behaviors as the show progresses.
For instance, I value authenticity, people like myself, marginalized people, those with the best reason to win, competent players, and anyone who isn't one of those abusive personalities. (I do think lying is within the spirit of a game and not necessarily disqualifying.)
2. Notice when your favorites begin to change and why.
The editors will center a few contestants in any given episode. Notice if who you are rooting for ever changes *only* for this reason.
Stepping out of the narrative, are you suddenly pulling for someone you previously didn't like? Is there a good reason that aligns with your consistent criteria, or are you just being led by the focus of whoever is in the protagonist position?
For example, right now I'm watching the second season of Million Dollar Secret. Everyone's suspicions are circling around two targets for elimination. I keep catching myself rooting for the dudebro and against the smart girl. Because that's the editorial POV.
But I actually favored the smart girl in the *last episode*. I still like her. The bro has not actually won me over. But because I've been pulled into his perspective narratively, I empathize with him automatically. It simply bypasses my reasoning center.
I've become aware of this at several points and reminded myself that I'm rooting for her. I keep getting pulled back anyway.

They have been wildly successful in producing the most unwatchable drek imaginable - but the $$$ dollars keep rolling in..

I don't wish ill on the kid, but it WOULD be funny if Mini Tyrell struggled as a rookie coming straight out of late models with almost no big track experience in ARCA and they have to bring back the reality series for another year to replace him.
However, they plan on having Cup cars by Daytona next year, so I'm guessing there's a chance one of their Truck drivers goes to Cup with that program such as Cup vet Justin Haley and they will have an opening anyway.

The RAM and Kaulig reality show is really dumb, but I enjoy any extra racing I can watch and want to be able to learn more about the personality of a variety of (mostly) young drivers. Plus I wanna help contribute to getting these drivers more exposure, so even if this deal doesn't work out for them maybe they impress enough Kaulig puts them in their 5th truck for a few races or another ARCA or Truck team comes along.

I hate that I'm watching such a manufactured competition reality show, but I've watched the first two episodes of RAM: Race for the Seat cause of Roush's Racer X and Gong Show before that are any example, even those who don't win could go on to having a long NASCAR career either for Kaulig itself in its "All Star" car with plenty of part-time opportunities or for other teams looking for sharp young talent who watch this show.

I hate reality shows and I really hate Dana White, but I will watch the show where RAM and Kaulig pit 15 young drivers against one another to earn the 4th ride in the Truck series they haven't filled yet. When Roush did Driver X based of their Gong Show competitions, there were so many drivers that competed who ended up having really solid careers themselves even after losing like Justin Allgaier. So this show could be a who's who of future talent.
