This was our principal reason for selecting from the methods enumerated above the procedure of mental alerting and lulling, or suggestion to wake up and go to sleep; a method which, in the course of our investigations,
gave us the most stable positive results...

A story about our trip to Moscow in January 1980.
We were in the USSR for a long weekend, and we were very young.
We weren't particularly excited about looking at the Kremlin treasures with our guide, so we decided to go off on our own instead.
We went on the splendid metro to the Tourist Currency Shop and bought some souvenirs including my camera.
Time was tight on the way back so we got a taxi back to the hotel. The drive was exciting - sheet ice in an old Lada!
The rest of the time went fine and all was good until we arrived back at Luton Airport.
Our suitcase had been absolutely trashed and was held together with string and tape. Nothing was missing.
Only years later did the penny drop.
Were we watched or followed on our unauthorised side trip?
Did they suspect we'd met someone we shouldn't have done and collected something to take out of the country?
Was it some sort of 'punishment' for not staying in our group?We will never know!
