It's Estonia Independence day on Aug 20th
The collapse of the #USSR 35 years ago was largely bloodless - the Afghan war, the arms race with the west, cheap oil and a mismanaged economy left a demoralised military unwilling to enforce the rule of a warped communist system on a bankrupt population.
Countries controlled from Moscow since WW2 simply walked away - Estonia amongst others. The wreckage of the economy that was left was divided up amongst interested parties (oligarchs) and the political vacuum was filled by the only organisation left "intact" - Federal Security Service of the #Russian Federation - thus #Putin became a dictator with powerful enforcement capabilities.
The majority of the Russian population want the USSR (or at least the International clout) back - Putin is their man!
Maybe Wildberries and petrol lines will create the same conditions - Putin can see the writing on the wall.

Yes, Joni. The Soviet Union was not a state dedicated to human progress, it was the Russian colonial Empire disguised as #socialism
Eastern European states are the ”proof in the pudding”: After #USSR collapsed, life expentancy in these states has up to doubled.
#Russia is a barrier on the way to progress. And even though the USA is imperial too, there is no logic there that lets Russia off the hook for what they have done.

UA | Drohobycz | K.u.k.
Among some online events, you can watch this video (Congress for Jewish Culture) about the Yiddish writers, part of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, murdered on the 12th of August 1952:
"An annual memorial remembering the Soviet Yiddish writers and artists murdered on August 12th, 1952. The 2026 event features readings by theater students from the YIVO Uriel Weinreich Summer Program in Yiddish Language and Literature: Leyb-Shmuel Balasz, Eszter-Brokhe Kruman, Neyakh Mitchell, Tucker Tsilke Smith; as well as sometime faculty members Allen Lewis Rickman, Shane Baker, and Mikhl Yashinsky."

💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🐋🎵 In 1984-85, thousands of belugas trapped in #Arctic pack #ice off #Russia’s #Chukchi Peninsula faced starvation.
The #icebreaker Moskva crushed an escape channel, playing #classical #music to coax the herd forward. Roughly 2,000 survived and about 1,000 died, though the music’s role stayed unverified.

The United States, on the other hand, was not explicitly anti-Zionist, but through the idea of collective acceptance, explicit tolerance, and economic opportunity convinced many Jews to either go to the US, or to stay in the US rather than join the Zionist cause in Israel.
This was far more effective than any deliberate campaign has ever been in convincing Jews that Zionism was outdated and unnecessary.
Today's Anti-Zionists could take a lesson from history: If you want to really stop Zionism, offer an alternative that doesn't demand Jews give up their identity or values.
Discrimination, hate, denigration and even legality won't stop Jews from being Jews.

In the 20th Century there were two Anti-Zionist campaigns. One was deliberate and one was not designed to be explicitly anti-Zionist, but it effectively was.
In the Soviet Union, they felt Judaism's separate identity was a threat, and Zionism encapsulated their fears cohesively and collectively. Jews in the Soviet Union wanted out from under the oppression of the government. The US and Israel both served as threats to a nation ruled by elite domination where oppression functioned as a tool for social order.
Yet despite everything from outlawing Jewish languages to spies, and even trying to offer its own alternative to Jewish autonomy, the USSR's anti-Zionist campaign failed, as many Soviet Jews moved to Israel before, during or after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

CW: USSR
So according to Reddit, the Soviets had something called the Fonemophone-4 speech synthesizer, based on the Elektronika-60 computer, developed between 1978 and 1991. C'mon, #nvda and #tts guys. Where's my Fonemophone-4 NVDA addon? All you'd have to do is emulate an Elektronika-60; hardware emulation is already being done for Dectalk and Speech Proes and Keynote Gold, so this is a solved problem, right? LOL JK. #USSR #retrocomputing #nvdasr -
Кто в курсе, почему эмблемой СССР был серб и молот? Сербы каким боком там?
alexromanoffff.

Mikhail Gorbachev destroyed the USSR. Boris Yeltsin was a puppet and failure. Vladimir Putin restored Russian dignity. It was a historical mistake to give up Crimea. It was the only navel base of the Soviet Union in the region. The agreement for the Russian navel fleet to continue using Crimea was cancelled later. Then came the US-NATO alliance to encircle Russia, thus leading to the current war. The Budapest memorandum served western interest. #ussr #RussiaUkraineWar

#USSR authorities:
- executed >600k people for political reasons only during Stalin's rule, most of them in extrajudicial manner without any fair trial (btw in a way directly prohibited by #Soviet constitution).
- built #gulag, where incarcerated more than million people in various years, in particular for political reasons.
- plotted 3 artificial #famine s - with millions of people killed. The 2nd one in #Ukraine (1932-33) - with clear signs of premeditated genocide.
- forcibly expelled a number of ethnic groups (#CrimeanTatars, #Chechens, Soviet #Germans just to name a few) to distant regions of USSR, often into not inhabitable conditions, with fatalities reaching dozens of percents.
- Initiated aggressive wars against #Finland and #Poland (the latter twice, 2nd time together with #NaziGermany), annexed #Baltic states and part of #Romania.
- Performed mass execution of #Polish #PoWs (#Katyn massacre).
- Performed systematic persecutions of people with foreign origin falsely charging them in espionage, which typically led to execution (ironically, Soviets were murdering refugee members of #Communist Party of #Germany to a not so much lesser extent as the #Nazis).I've named only the most prominent fuck I am talking about.

Listening to a psychedelic rock album from the Soviet Union in the early 70s because my interests are entirely normal and mainstream, thank you

The #USSR’s first #LaserDisc player the Rus-501 built at the Ryazan Instrument Plant in 1988. Maybe a couple hundred were ever made.
It fired a helium-neon laser needing 2,000V. It only read CAV discs and was already obsolete in the West.
Also, opening the lid didn’t shut the laser off.
Please do not look inside.
