«One Petal at a Time» A Book Review by Rowena Suarez

The author has warned me that most of her poems are not for light reading. I couldn’t agree more. They are not for the faint of heart. Her verses are drawn from her personal experience as an abuse survivor.

With her poetic prowess, she infuses each verse with a unique grace. Her words are captivating yet deeply moving. I found myself struggling to suppress tears as I absorbed her words. It was not an easy journey for Joni. After reading a few of her poems, I could no longer contain my tears. They emerged from the pages and touched my soul. Her words resonated within me, moving me to the core.

She possesses a strong and beautiful soul. Some individuals who have experienced similar trauma might not have survived her ordeal. I extend my deepest admiration to her for sharing every aspect of herself through her exquisite prose and poetry.

She’s also a sweet and dear person. I’ve witnessed how she supported and promoted the work of others, including mine. For that, I will be forever grateful.
I conclude this with an excerpt from one of her beautiful poems titled “Sunflower”:

doorways to who l am, my heart and soul 
is my gift to give to those I choose to love 
a survivor, my stem, leaf, and flower whole

for God so loved me, his innocent daughter 
forgiveness I found, as I flourish with age 
my ray florets feel His rain and curing water 
life moving splendidly with every new page

Through her raw and honest writing, she offers a profound and insightful exploration of her own experiences. The book aims to shed light on the concept of gaslighting and its impact on individuals.

Maggie Watson is one of the remarkable poets I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I admire the honesty and wisdom conveyed in her verses. Her poems often impart valuable lessons, even though the effects of emotional and psychological abuse may be subtle and difficult to perceive. Her words resonate deeply with me, and I can’t help but feel her pain. Among her many poems, the following one particularly resonated with me:

The Things We Do For Love 

The sacrifices we make for love will often cause us pain. 

But we make them anyway. 
We think that love conquers all, and that they will change. 
Only years later do we realise that we lost ourselves along the way. 
The clock is now ticking. 
We have less time to waste as we remember the good old days, when we were young and so desperate to become adults. 
If we knew then what we know now, would we have made the same sacrifices for love?

She is also one of the sweetest poets around, always leaving thoughtful words and wisdom. I felt how strong a person she is through her last poem:

I am (Becoming) 

I am a leaf blowing in the wind.

I am the bird that soars and flies. 
I am the butterfly emerging from the cocoon. 
I am the spring flower in the garden beginning to bloom. 
I am letting go, but I am not free-falling. 
I know the map of my soul, and I hear its calling. 
My soul no longer plays a lament over the past or things not meant to be. 
I am now becoming the person I was supposed to be before you stole the best parts of me.

To Maggie, I salute you for overcoming all your trials and emerging stronger. You are a unique and cherished person, and I am so grateful to have met you. Although we are miles apart, I have always felt your kindness and love. I will always be here to catch up and support you.
