Best Watch Company Logos, Part 10

10. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Initials & Wordmark combo

Fir the 10th installment of my series on favorite logos, we have one of the rare logos incorporating the wordmark of the brand that I like. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s logo celebrates and remembers the 1937 joining of forces between the watchmaking expertise of Edmond Jaeger and the manufacturing prowess of Antoine LeCoultre. The JL at the top is a symmetrical joining of the last initials of both men and to me, is reminiscent of a pallet fork; making sure that even when not on a watch that the logo reminds the viewer what business Jaeger-LeCoultre are in.

Moving to the wordmark, the J in Jaeger & final ‘e’ in LeCoultre are joined by an underlining ribbon that makes a visual statement of the joining of the two men’s businesses & passions on all of their watches; an agreement that has lasted almost 90 years. May it long continue.

For a few years before World War I, a buyer could purchase mass-produced #tourbillon #watches from two different companies in La Chaux-de-Fonds. These rarely-seen today but remain remarkable historical artifacts. The Musée International d’Horlogerie has one of each in their collection!

All of Cécile Schorpp-Vaucher’s assets, including Linzaghi’s #tourbillon and the Montre Squelette #watches were purchased by Charles A. DeLimoge. He set up a company using the brand La Duchesse (another Schorpp-Vaucher trademark) to produce and sell “Montres Fantasie”.

In 1910, Charles A. DeLimoge finally brought the Linzaghi #tourbillon #watch to market. This refined version had two wide bridges to support the dial rather than four slim ones and a wide area to view the balance, which rotated around the dial every 4 minutes!

Courvoisier Frères licensed the design, producing the #tourbillon #watch at their La Chaux-de-Fonds factory as the Mobilis between April 1905 and World War I. This was sold as “the people’s tourbillon” alongside the Modernista, an unusual jump hour/flyback minute watch.

La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaker Jules Russbach was an inventor as well, selling a #watch with a built-in thermometer as well as an 8-day watch of his own design that resembled the famous Hebdomas. He spent 3 years working to bring Linzaghi’s #tourbillon to market.

Italian-Swiss watchmaker Luigi “Louis” Linzaghi invented another #tourbillon at the same time. It was a real oddball, mounting the balance and escapement on a plate that rotated around the dial every 4 minutes! He patented it on August 2, 1905 but sold the design 3 months later.

For a long time I have been looking for a midsize (36mm) Omega Seamaster for my small wrist. Omega stopped making midsize versions years ago. Now it is just 41mm and 42mm.

I originally wanted the "Bond" one with light blue aluminum bezel insert but that scratches very easily so it is very hard to find one in a good condition.

I found one with steel bezel for a good price and could not resist.

For a 20-25 years old watch it still looks very good, no big scratches or over-polishing and more importantly it still runs well so no servicing needed for now.

A Change in the Winds?

This past week, I took a Thursday-Sunday road trip and I brought a total of three watches with me; the baby Alpinist, the Blood Moon (my night watch) and my Falcon.

It was the week for the Alpinist to be on wrist, but when I travel, I like to have at least one option depending on the situation and wardrobe I pack. I packed a couple of shirts (both black with red & white features) that either the Blood Moon or the Falcon wouldn’t clash with, but it turns out that I never took the Alpinist off for the whole trip, even for bed.

I never even wore the two shirts I planned on wearing that would have clashed with the Alpinist. I actually wore a t-shirt I don’t usually wear in public and a road trip themed shirt made specifically for this trip in order to keep the Alpinist on wrist all week.

Does this mean I don’t like my Falcon any more? I don’t think so (I will be participating in @Aurelian’s #1wc with the Falcon), but it does open the door to the question, right? Maybe I just figured I was going to get a lot of wrist time for the Falcon soon, I typically always wear the Blood Moon to sleep and just didn’t want to shirk on wrist time for the Alpinist and it’s as simple as that?

Whatever it means regarding the Falcon, I know what it means for the Alpinist; it’s not leaving the collection. After I won it as a door prize at a meetup, I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it because I wasn’t even looking to add a new watch to the collection. In fact, I’m trying to downsize it to 10 watches & this complicates that. The heart wants what the heart wants though, I suppose.

week04: 2026-01-18 until 2026-01-24

Summary

I picked up a CASIO A168WA-1 watch & love the simplicity and battery life, though I’ll still need to grab my smartwatch when I actually want to track workouts. My automated Mastodon setup is working like a charm; N8N wakes up my Jenkins PC when there’s a new release, and everything updates itself in under 12 hours without me lifting a finger. The attic renovation is looking great now that the roof tiler’s finished with the windows and prep work. Also made some solid Gulasch this week and I’m still working through that Lucia Berlin book. More Ice skating on the weekend.

Old school

Finally got myself an old CASIO watch again. Noticed that the good old vintage watches became popular again. My first watch was the famous CASIO F-91W back in the 1990s. Several years battery life, water proof, sturdy, functional. Had several other CASIO watches after that. Up to the slightly bulky ProTrek with altitude and temperature sensors before GARMIN started to make Forerunner watches.

Now my son started to wear the CASIO A158 and triggered me finally getting one again as well. I had the F-91W in my shopping cart for some years now. But eventually settled for the slightly classier A168WA-1. The A158 is very similar, but to me the light just wasn’t working well enough to be able to read the time in low light condition. The Illuminator backlight of the A168WA works much better for me.

Let’s see how long this will last on me. I like the simplicity and no-worry battery life. It’s also quite affordable and durable enough for me to not worrying about wearing it in all activities.

Only drawback is that I’d have to put on a smart watch for exercises again explicitly to track the heart rate and effort.

Automation

Last week a new Mastodon security release was published. My server is running with a slighly modified version to allow for posts with 5000 characters. So for evey release I have to build a new docker image for my instances. The process of checking out the Mastodon repo, patching the sources, building and uploading the docker images is automated with a Jenkins server. That Jenkins server is an old desktop PC that’s really only used for this purpose and doesn’t have to run all the time. But when there is a new Mastodon release, I want to be able to build the new images as quickly as possible. Especially for security updates.

I’m using N8N for this part. A workflow uses the Mastodon Release RSS feed as a trigger. If there is a new release, the N8N workflow will send a Wake-on-LAN signal to my Jenkins PC and wake it up. Jenkins will do it’s job and produce the new docker images and publish them to my docker hub. On my servers Watchtower (and now a clone of the original, see last weeks post) is checking the running containers whether there are updates to their images available. If so, it’ll pull these images and restart the container.

That automation worked well again for the last Mastodon security update and brought my instance up to the latest release in less than 12hrs without me having to touch anything 🙂

Cooking

Felt the craving for Gulasch (beef stew) this week and set up a large pot for our weekly family dinner. As a side I used carrots and german dumplings. The kids each had 2 refills … so wasn’t that bad apparently.

I like those carrots. It’s really just sliced carrots and a tablespoon of butter in a pot. Cook for about 15-20 minutes until the carrots are soft to your liking. Super simple, super delicious.

Also the stew is pretty simple to make if you just obey some simple rules and have enough time of course. The secret ingredient to good food is usually patients 😉

Mini BnB

On Thursday we had a mini Beer’n’Burger meetup with a slightly reduced crew. Nevertheless delicious burgers at Rembrandt Burgers in Friedrichshain. Still shocked that our friend didn’t knew the Maulfwurfn by René Marik (who’s also outspoken against AfD and other Nazis 🙌).

The roof tiler is done with his work in the attic. All new windows are in and the roof constructions is prepared for the insulation. It’s a really nice and bright space up there at the moment. Tempted to just turn it into a loft 😉

Ice Skating

This week was rather cold and the ice on the lake got thicker again. As it was thawing a few days the week before, the surface now was rather smooth as the melted water just froze again. Best conditions to go ice skaing again. At some spots the ice was so clear I could see the vegetation below the surface. Some hexagonal air enclosures caught my attention.

Learning

mmh, can’t really recall anything particular learning in that week. Should probably take a more explicit effort next week.
