    My boss wants me to brief the #operations group on it this week.

    However, I now see the invite has been forwarded around so that now it's Operations + 7 people at my boss's level (from two groups) and 1 person a level above them.

    So I have to give a talk that addresses all those interests plus now I have stratospheric scrutiny. Well, cumulo-nimbus anyway.

    If you want to NOT have a scheduler because I've been paralyzed with fear, this is the way to do it.

  20. Internet → Cloud; Repeat

    One of the factors weighing on us as we think about ways our textbook needs to change is the relationship between the Internet and the cloud. There is an obvious symbiotic relationship: the Internet provides the communication substrate that the cloud runs on, and the cloud provides the computing substrate that enables applications to be distributed across the Internet. That part of the story is pretty straightforward to explain, and the roadmap for new sections we need to write is equally obvious. For example, we clearly need to describe how to adapt TCP congestion control for cloud datacenters, and we need to explain how multicast can be realized as a cloud-based overlay instead of being embedded in IP.

    But there are less obvious implications, which I came to appreciate as I worked on our chapter on Network Operations. This proved to be one of the most challenging chapters to write, in part because there wasn’t a lot of material we could borrow from 6E, and in part because the way different organizations operate their networks seems to be deeply steeped in legacy practices. Every network handles operations differently. The timeline of events is another factor, or at least that’s a conclusion I draw for myself as I reconstruct the incremental development of the relevant technologies.

    Going back to the beginning, if you use early editions of mainstream networking textbooks as your archaeological “core sample”, network management is synonymous with SNMP and MIB. That’s how we’ve taught network operations for years, if we covered the topic at all. 

    Fast forward to a more recent historical era (early 2010s), which is when I first encountered Tail-f, at the time a management-focused startup that collaborated on the original NFV Proof-of-Concept. (Tail-f was acquired by Cisco in 2014.) It was clear that the biggest challenge we faced was how to bring the cloud’s operational practices to a Telco setting. I didn’t appreciate it at the time, but the solution Tail-f brought to the prototyping effort—which included YANG—went on to become the foundation for today’s best practices in network operations.

    It’s a bit of a simplification, but you can think of YANG, and its companion protocol, NETCONF, as replacing SNMP/MIB—NETCONF provides the “remote procedure call” mechanism and YANG serves as the modeling language. The case for YANG is compelling. Its hierarchical approach to data modeling—coupled with the availability of open source tooling—makes the process of creating, using, and modifying models programmable, and hence, adaptable to an iterative process. This is essential for any operator who has to deal with software-paced feature velocity. Similarly, NETCONF is an upgrade over SNMP, if for no other reason than the move from UDP to a reliable, authenticated transport such as SSH.

    This is where things get interesting, and I would argue, where the cloud’s influence on networking becomes  even more pronounced. As a modeling language, YANG is no better than the data models it defines. Left to their own devices, network vendors were happy to define models for their own products, and the vendor-agnostic aspirations of the MIB were quickly lost as the collection of  configuration models became fragmented. Here’s where I resort to speculation, but it probably required a cloud provider to push for a vendor-agnostic unification of the models, which is a primary objective of the OpenConfig initiative. OpenConfig is a Google response to network management built around gNMI (gRPC Network Management Interface). The requirement that operations scale is paramount to cloud providers, and unlike Telcos which historically have depended on vendor support, they have the engineering resources to make it so. The approach OpenConfig took was to build consensus around a unified set of models, and then leverage Google’s investment in gRPC—an open sourced request/response protocol that also supported streaming—as an alternative to NETCONF. (gNMI in theory can run over either NETCONF or gRPC, but the latter is pretty clearly the more cloud-friendly approach.)

    Teaching Network Operations

    The history lesson is informative, but as we decided how to cover operations in our book, we faced a decision about whether to focus on NETCONF or gNMI. We decided to go with the latter, albeit with an acknowledgement that a large fraction of the world still favors the former. There is a little bit of reasoning—and some amount of bias—in that decision. (This seems only fair, since one’s approach to operations often involves strong opinions).

    First, as a matter of principle, NETCONF is yet another example of reinventing RPC for no apparent reason (a topic we’ve opined on many times). Reuse of gRPC by gNMI is a big plus from our perspective, and a lesson we hope our readers come to appreciate.

    Second, one of our goals is to elevate network operations to a first-class topic in networking, rather than a footnote. An important part of doing this is to take a broad look at the challenge of operationalizing a system. This starts by considering both configuration and telemetry (gNMI has the advantage of addressing both), but also by looking at the bigger picture: the role of operations in balancing stability with feature velocity. This is where the cloud’s emphasis on including software development (i.e., feature creation) as part of the end-to-end management pipeline (as opposed to being outsourced to a vendor) becomes important. If you want to talk about cloud-based tools for continuous integration and continuous deployment, then it makes sense to couple them with a cloud-based approach to configuration and telemetry.

    Finally, and probably most importantly, our treatment of network operations mirrors topics covered elsewhere in the book. All the examples could broadly be labeled as Software-Defined Networking (SDN), but they arise in different settings: virtualizing networks, routing in datacenter fabrics, and configuring networks. All depend on a programmatic device interface, and a centralized component that abstracts away the details of managing individual devices. Drawing attention to the oft-repeated pattern is an important takeaway from our book.

    Admittedly, we are still a long way from having a seamless management story across the broad range of networks that need to be managed, if that’s even possible. But a necessary step in that direction involves emphasizing the commonalities, and drawing attention to distinctions without a difference when we see them. We ended up focusing on the cloud-based approach over a Telco-based approach in part because it is gaining traction, and in part because it more fully embraces an open, software-based approach to networking. We’ve worked hard to ensure that the world doesn’t run on proprietary protocols; empowering anyone to also operate their own network, without the risk of being locked into proprietary management tools is an equally important goal.

    We note the announcement that Jupiter, Google’s datacenter network, has won this year’s SIGCOMM Networking System Award: “Another remarkable aspect of Jupiter has been its ability to accommodate constant and seamless evolution and improvement while maintaining high (99.999%) availability as a production system…. The network was built to flex for new hardware generations at higher speeds via a control and management plane designed to evolve. A decade of operation at planetary scale has been the result.”
