These #Swedes #biked from #Carmel to #Marina on Sunday, October 13 and were heading back to Carmel when we met them in #SandCity. Their cheerfulness reflects the increased #endorphins and overall #joy of #biking—not so much the #infrastructure they experienced in sections of Carmel, #PebbleBeach and elsewhere.

A quick toot in case any Swedes in the UK follow me or spot this: there's a #Lucia celebration outside Bristol on December 14th (so a mere day late, not bad!) if anyone is interested.

I've been once before and while I can't go this time it's heartily recommended. It's pretty bilingual as there's a mix of Swedish and British people present. It's super cozy.

Did you know that the first #German #adventure #novel tells us about a really #gross #punishment ?

"Der Abenteurliche Simplicissimus" by von Grimmelshausen is a book in which the main character is a reluctant #soldier.

He describes how he watched as a labourer is force-fed a vile concoction of liquid manure, which is called "Schwedentrunk" (drink of the #Swedes).

This punishment often led to fatal lung infections & was employed by #Swedish soldiers during the Thirty Years' War.

On December 13th #Swedes are all about #Lucia so today we ate homemade saffron buns (lussekatter) and watched the "official" celebration via SVT Play.

We were lucky enough to attend a live #luciafirande in #Bristol this past weekend and this is a lovely photo (one of many!) that Fox took (licensed CC BY-NC @Flamekebab) during the performance. 🕯️

Did you know that during the 17th c., multiple #Swedes were sentence to death for having #sex with nature-spirits?

One woman said she had children with a #Faerie king, with all the kids being taken by him.

A man said a mountain-spirit took advantage of him after he fell asleep.

Another was promised luck if he had sex with a water-spirit & not his wife.

It was the latter's wife who brought the case to court.
