ISWAP has released the identity of its fighter and cameraman killed on 11 July in a foiled attack when the terror group attempted to infiltrate a military base in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The Acting Military Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Mohammed Goni, had earlier stated that troops of the 19 Brigade, Sector 3, under Operation HADIN KAI, successfully foiled the attack, killing scores of terrorists and forcing them to retreat in disarray after attempting to breach the military location under the cover of night.
The identity of the eliminated terrorist has been confirmed as Abu Salim al-Barnawi, the notorious Boko Haram/ISWAP raid commander who later became the group’s chief photographer and propaganda operative, during the failed terrorist attack on a military location last week.
According to recent information from the Nigeria Army, the Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, confirmed that Abu Salim was killed alongside other ISWAP fighters.
In its report, it stated that, “Abu Salim was eliminated alongside other members of the ISWAP mobile media team, including Abu Umar Khattab and Abu Khalid Usman. It could be recalled that the video camera was recovered among the other items stated in the OPHK official statement.”
‘The remains of Abu Salim al Barnawi been dragged by its member after the Nigerian Army Successful thwarted its infiltration inflicted massive blow on the terrorist on 11 July’
It went further to say that, “The terrorist group has now been compelled to acknowledge his death through the publication of an obituary, exposing yet another significant loss within its dwindling ranks. Intelligence indicates that Abu Salim al-Barnawi previously led cross-border terrorist raids into Cameroon before being reassigned to the group’s media wing, where he was responsible for photographing and filming terrorist attacks, producing propaganda, and glorifying the group’s atrocities in an attempt to recruit impressionable individuals and deceive the public.”
Evaluating the devastating blow inflicted on the terror group by Operation HADIN KAI during the failed attempted attack by the group at Cross Kauwa on 11 July 2026, the Nigerian Army spokesman for Operation HADIN KAI stated that:
“The elimination of Abu Salim’s led ISWAP mobile media team during the failed infiltration attempt at Cross Kauwa on 12 July 2026 further underscores the devastating impact of Operation HADIN KAI’s sustained offensive operations. During the failed attack, troops inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists, eliminating several high-profile fighters, including a Syrian Arab, a Quaid named Aliyu Zabarmari, while another Arab mercenary remains missing till date. Several other key fighters sustained severe injuries as they fled under intense military pressure.”
“His elimination is another clear demonstration that the sustained offensive operations of Operation HADIN KAI are yielding tangible results. The loss of such seasoned operatives further degrades the terrorists’ operational capability, weakens their propaganda apparatus, erodes their command structure, and diminishes their ability to spread extremist narratives and fabricate an illusion of strength.”
“The issuance of an obituary by the terrorist group is a direct confirmation of the increasing pressure being exerted by Operation HADIN KAI. It also reflects the growing difficulty the terrorists face in replacing experienced operatives who have been systematically eliminated through sustained military operations. As their ranks continue to shrink and their propaganda machinery deteriorates, the group’s capacity to inspire, recruit, and coordinate attacks is steadily being eroded.”
While reaffirming its commitment to combating insurgents, Captain Mohammed Goni maintained that Operation HADIN KAI remains resolute and relentless in carrying out intelligence-driven offensive operations to hunt down and eliminate the remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as dismantle their support and propaganda networks in order to deny them freedom of action and ensure the complete restoration of peace and security across the North-East region.

Japan Attracts Over 21 Million Foreign Visitors In First Half Of 2026

Japan, voted the “world’s most favorite destination” by readers of Condé Nast Traveler last year, received 21.08 million foreign visitors in the first half of the year, down 2% from the same period a year earlier, marking the country’s first decline in inbound tourism for the January-June period in five years.
The drop was largely driven by a sharp decline in arrivals from mainland China after Beijing advised its citizens against traveling to Japan, while strong growth from South Korea helped cushion the decline, Japan Today reported.
Mainland Chinese arrivals plunged 56.4% year-on-year to 2.06 million in the first half, while visitors from South Korea rose 18.6% to 5.68 million, and from Taiwan increased 20.9% to 3.97 million.
Hotel operator Mori Trust forecasts Japan will welcome between 40.5 million and 42 million international visitors in 2026, slightly below the record 42.68 million arrivals recorded last year, The Japan Times reported.
The company said demand for hotel bookings remains strong for the summer and autumn travel seasons, despite airlines increasing fuel surcharges on international flights amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
