  1. theguardian.com/environment/20. "Plans for new #onshore #windfarms in #England have reached their highest annual level in a decade, after the #Government overturned the #Conservatives’ de facto ban [of] 2015. About 45 applications for new onshore windfarms were submitted in the year to March, according to a Guardian analysis of government data."

  2. The #Trump administration has finally come up with an odd rationale for banning #windfarms : they confuse radar, so drones can sneak past them and do drone things, so clearly they are an existential #nationalsecurity risk.

Next up: "You know, when drones fly just above trees in national forests, it confuses radar, so ..."

  3. Labour’s priorities are totally wrong

This week, the government published the long-delayed Defence Investment Plan, which increases military spending by a further £15 billion, with military spending planned to rise even more to nearly £80 billion per year by 2029. This will be at the expense of other much-needed projects.

Keir Starmer said that the government will be spending £64 billion on nuclear weapons over the next four years. This is 20% of our defence spending. It’s enough money to build 64 brand new hospitals or 18 massive offshore wind farms, which would make us much more self-reliant.

Labour’s priorities are totally wrong. I acknowledge the threat of Russia, but what use are nuclear weapons against them? Relying on nuclear weapons drags the world closer towards a nuclear conflict. Should they ever be used, they won’t just kill millions, if not billions, of innocent people, but they would throw so much ash up into the atmosphere that it would lead to a nuclear winter, where the sun is blocked out. This would mean ecocide as well as genocide, and it would be impossible to grow food.

Using drones in warfare is deeply concerning. In Gaza, Israel has programmed drones to broadcast the sound of Palestinian babies crying or children shouting “I want my mother”. Of course, this brings out concerned residents, looking for the child, at which point the soldiers shoot them.

Defence spending should be directed to defence, not to weapons of mass destruction.  What we need are systems that can protect us from drone warfare.

Meanwhile, our greatest security threat is the climate crisis. We need our forces ready to set up emergency flood barriers, rescue flood victims, fight wildfires and support the NHS when heatwaves overwhelm it. Governments’ priority should be urgently reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and preparing our nation to cope with the more extreme weather just around the corner.

  4. Proponents of #wind projects criticized the deals, pointing out that regions like the NE #US were counting on the #WindFarms to meet rising #electricity demand & could now face future #shortages.

“Replacing coastal offshore wind with geothermal or natural gas infrastructure in another region does nothing to address rising ratepayer #affordability concerns, reliability challenges or potential gaps in #power supply in the #Northeast & #midAtlantic,” said Hillary Bright, exec dir of Turn Forward….

  5. #Wind #power generates far fewer #planet-warming #emissions than using #FossilFuels. But #Trump has criticized the technology as ugly, falsely claimed it is inefficient & has sought to block new #wind turbines. Last year, the #Interior Dept ordered work to stop on 5 #WindFarms already under construction off the East Coast, but federal #judges struck down all of those moves. The #Pentagon has also sought to halt approvals of wind farms on land.

  6. The agreement is similar to deals that the #Trump admin has struck since March with other companies, including French energy giant TotalEnergies, to abandon #WindFarms off California, New Jersey, New York & North Carolina in exchange for investing in #FossilFuel projects.

The announcement means the government has so far spent roughly $2.5 billion of #TaxpayersMoney to get companies to terminate offshore #wind leases.

  7. Under the agreement #Invenergy will voluntarily surrender 4 leases in federal waters for #WindFarms that would have been located in the New York Bight, off the Central Coast of California & in the Gulf of Maine. All of those projects were in the early stages of development & had little chance of moving forward under the #Trump admin, which has halted all federal permitting for offshore #wind.

  8. "The Trump administration has brought US onshore wind development to a halt citing national security concerns, representing a major escalation in the president’s crusade against renewable energy.

Approvals for about 165 onshore wind projects on private lands are being stalled by the Department of Defense, including wind farms that were awaiting final sign-off, others in the middle of negotiations, and some that typically would not require oversight by the department, according to the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and people close to the matter.

Wind farms require routine approval from the Defense Department to ensure they do not interfere with radar systems. This typically involves the level of risk being assessed and the developer paying an agreed sum for the army to update its radar filter system so it can locate the windmill. Some projects can be deemed not to pose a risk due to their distance from army facilities and flight paths. Normally these assessments can take as little as a few days to complete.

Since August 2025, developers have faced a mix of setbacks, including not receiving expected communications from DoD, having meetings to discuss the status of their projects canceled without the opportunity to reschedule, and being informed that the department has stopped processing their applications, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The affected projects include 35 that had completed negotiations and are awaiting sign-off from the DoD—first reported by Axios in March."

  10. The UK's large #windfarms have also helped to lower the wholesale power price by a third last year and insulated the UK from some of the price shocks we’ve seen

  11. Trump Administration Will Pay More Energy Firms to Cancel #WindFarms
Companies will invest in #oil and #gas projects, echoing an earlier deal with the French energy giant #TotalEnergies.
Forfeit leases in federal waters for two wind farms, one to be built off New York and New Jersey and the other off California. The government will reimburse the companies a combined $885 million, the amount they paid for the leases under the Biden administration.
