Spent the day constructing my solar panel mounts. We have a south facing wall, I'm not allowed to put panels on it as it where we sit in the sunshine.
So! It's not sunny any longer, so I've built a temporary mount for 2 of the cheap eBay panels (1 broken, 1 good). The frame wedges them into a retaining sleeper plank so they can't slip forward. Currently they are resting on the brick but I'll anchor them subtly. When we reach Spring it will be a quick deconstruction and store the panels back in the garage.
Both show 34V open circuit, I've ordered some wire so make up connectors to run to my inverter/battery.

I had to crack open the plastic tupperware box my garden web server sits in, and bring the hardware bits and pieces inside for maintenance.
Logging of boot and shutdown events has been broken since I changed the settings on my solar charge controller. The controller had an idea that the battery under its care was a lead acid battery instead of a LiFePo4 battery, and that it had strange and undesirable charging cycles. So it stopped distributing charge from the battery to the Raspberry Pi server, in a misguided attempt to lengthen the battery's life.
To overcome this executive decision, I set it's battery mode to 'always on'.
I think this broke my logging because my microcontroller was looking for a certain charge state to send a boot up signal to the Pi. Which the battery now never reports.
So I updated the microcontroller code and reflashed it, then stuck the whole thing back in the box. Let's hope that will fix it...

Bloody hell.
While doing the wiring on our solar system, I did get a spark that fried our Outback communications hub.
I immediately ordered the hub4 from The Solar Store. They called this morning to tell me it's out of stock and that Outback looks like it's going under, so no restocking in the future.
Luckily they had the hub10 in stock - which is twice the cost but will work.
The more concerning part is Outback going out of business. I talked to the Solar Store rep and he said it's not official yet, but they heard outback has laid off most of its staff.
So now we're going to have to order a few key parts to make sure we have spares on hand. Especially the Mate3.
This also likely means they're going to stop maintaining the OpticsRE website that allows us to get system data when we're not here.
Really glad we have Phase 2 of our solar upgrade in the works which will transition our main system to EG4, and the Outback system will then just be a backup.
Dank ordentlicher Batterie war mein Haus von 24.02.2026 bis 09.10.2026 fast ohne Netzbezug beim Strom. Bis auf die Schwankungen rum ums Einspeisen und Finetuning der Anlage, hatte ich nur einmal kurz nen Konfigurationsfehler.
