  3. 30°C rooftop solar action: setup upgrade, part 1.

Initial condition: dead battery, molten screw terminals, two solar panels with broken sealing / corrosion inside. Panels screwed to tiles (9 tiles with holes!), ratsnest of wires.

I did not know that BP made solar panels. According to some research this one is pre-2000 (old logo), so approx. 30 years old and delivers approx. 30-50W.

I reused two of the mounting rails that sit on the tiles (it worked fine for 30 years after all), but added standard solar rails and gaskets. The new module is 200W and should be enough to run a small fridge, charge electric garden tools, charge an electric bike, run a small kettle for tea/coffee/instant noodles, ... so get rid of some fossil fueled devices.

Next time I will pick colder weather as 30°C on the roof and ~40°C+ under the roof was not great.

I will prepare a simple metal plate with new charge controller, inverter etc. to get rid of the ratsnest of wires going everywhere.

fun times in the forest: last night i heard some scrambling under the bed and thought "if this is a rat, then all 3 of these cats are useless because this is the bedroom - our most 'home-base' space - and it should therefore be the least likely to have a rat."

i thought i heard it scrambling toward the cat food bowl which is next to the bed. so i rolled over, turned on my phone flashlight, and was face to face with THE biggest cane toad i've ever seen. possibly it seemed bigger because it was <1 foot from my face and illuminated in the flashlight and i wasn't expecting it at all 😆. it was bigger than the toad that was using the cat water as a personal chillout pool last month (this one would not have fit in the cat water bowl), or perhaps it was that same one, but grown substantially since then!

anyway, after i composed myself, i blocked off its path back under the bed with a book, got my garden gloves and a bucket, and put it in the bucket (i could barely hold it in a single hand, it was so big). these guys don't have much of a defensive strategy aside from "be still, sit facing a corner, and hope you are mistaken for a rock", so they don't really try to escape too much. i tossed it in my azolla pond (where it should be much happier than under my bed). really hope the sucker doesn't try to come back.

fun/unfun fact: they were introduced to hawai'i because of their 'voracious appetite', as pest control. i really should make a zine highlighting at least a handful of the invasive species that were *deliberately* introduced to the island.

anyway, the pic doesn't really do it justice, but there ya go.

  23. Finally finished some light engineering for a bioacoustic monitoring job this summer, within the context of an agro-ecology grant. Test rig is currently running in the garden with the others in storage. Still missing some odd bits (U-bolts seem hard to source).

  24. Can anyone recommend a portable power station (which I would charge with solar panels) that is capable of running various 120V power tools? I have a Pecron LFP2000 which can run *some* tools, but can't handle the startup surge of my mitre saw, 8gal air compressor, or electric log splitter. If anybody has actually run tools like these on a power station I'd love to hear about it.

I'm considering the Anker C2000 v2 as they claim a 4000W surge capacity on it, but prefer not to spend $1000 to find out.

  25. Interesting Kickstarter project for the off-grid crowd. PREP is a portable wind turbine — 250W, 6 lbs, backpack-sized. Automatically aligns to wind direction with a patent-pending finless yaw system.

Solar is great but doesn't work at night. This fills that gap: kickstarter.com/projects/43819
