It is said the 2026/27 summer fire season here in South East Queensland, is looking like it'll be the worst in 50 years.
That is a period longer than I've been alive.
Meanwhile @eff @internetarchive and others are cheering fucking #LLM bots. Technology that works half-arsed for 3 years at a time, then has to be ripped out and replaced because the new generation of parts are incompatible with the previous one and the old ones have depreciated to be worth less than raw sand.
Yeah, great show. Seems in a time of crisis you know who your true allies are.

The drought threw up many surprises. I gave this Rodgersia very occasional water to keep it in the game but certainly not enough to keep the area damp. This fresh green growth only unfurled when the rain arrived. It seems well able to go into stasis when not in marshy conditions.

"...What’s more, in Memphis, xAI datacenters, including the largest data center in the US, maintained their power while residents were in the dark. In an Instagram video, state representative Justin J Pearson, whose campaign volunteers canvassed the Hickory Hill neighborhood to check on residents and share resources, said: “Working-class Black and rural communities are bearing the brunt of fallout from extreme weather events and the pressure that our grids are facing from the AI data center boom.”..."
-
"...But while Memphians are proud of their neighbors, of themselves, for immediately stepping in and working together to ensure that people didn’t suffer during the power outages, they’re frustrated that the work has been left to them...."

The Guardian: When Memphis went dark, community members brought the light: ‘We keep ourselves safe’
"...In the absence of governmental resources, the organizers relied on skeletal plans and protocols for what to do in rapid response scenarios. They were able to respond to the crisis almost immediately....He went across the city, servicing people without lights. He set generators up for them, running the cord through their homes and explaining to them how to use the machine... he expects communities to come together in times of crisis as those in Memphis did. “We all stick together and make things happen and use our resources, most likely, we can take care of each other with no problem.”..."

Tidbit here about EVs in this LA times article:
"...California’s EV adoption keeps climbing, with nearly 1 in 6 new cars fully electric, robust used sales and hundreds of millions in state incentives replacing lost federal rebates...."
(California) "now has more public chargers than gas pumps"

The Guardian: ‘Godzilla-level’ El Niño could cause hottest year on record - The Latest
"...The UN has warned that the El Niño climate phenomenon is ‘supersizing before our eyes’. The event is forecast to be the largest in at least 1,000 years and will almost certainly shatter temperature records. After a summer of record-breaking heatwaves and extreme weather due to global heating, El Niño means 2027 is almost certain to be the hottest year ever recorded. ..."

El Niño is being supersized before our eyes. The science leaves no room for doubt: the planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up.
The race now is between rising risks and our commitment to take climate action and protect people. We must win that race.

The most depressing news of the week, and this decade so far, is the UN's report that leaves no doubt that we will fail to hold global warming below 1.5ºC. But there is also hope, read on.
The world agreed in 2015 on 1.5ºC, championed, I might add, by a certain Canadian Prime Minister. Now, the best we could hold it to would be 1.8ºC and that would be at breakneck speed.
That Prime Minister is now hanging out with his kids, his girlfriend, and is generally getting on just fine...while his party oversees what they intend to be the greatest expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure and emissions (LNG and TMX2) in Canadian history.
Meanwhile the rest of us are left breathing in the smoke and fleeing the fires.
As a young adult 25 years ago, I thought we had time. I was optimistic. I thought surely we'd make the correction once the every-day consequences started to hit.
Well here we are, fully in the *beginning* of those consequences, and our governments have never been more committed to being the last one to sell the last drop of oil, coal, or gas.
No one disputes anymore that we have and are changing the climate.
The deniers lost.
But the oil companies are still winning.
The only way to save ourselves at this time and to have any hope of 1.8ºC or 2ºC or whatever the lowest possible temperature is that we can achieve, is to take the fight to the oil companies directly.
Physically.
Economically.
Until they cannot operate, pollute or continue as going concerns.
We are all of us feeling the impacts of climate change and what oil companies have done. That means today we have many many more people ready to fight than we ever have before.
We have to fight because they are already killing us, and because the rest of us must survive.
We will fight because if we don't, both they, and we, will die on a planet rendered unliveable by our own stupidity and greed.
So we fight. In every way you can. You fight.

"...The most optimistic scenario will see temperature rise peak at 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels, above the goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C set by the Paris Agreement. Most other scenarios predict higher peaks...."
-
United Nations:
UNEP: World set to cross 1.5°C global warming, but can still limit, adapt to and return from higher temperatures
"...“This summer’s scorching heat, raging wildfires and deadly floods are a warning of what lies ahead. We must make the overshoot above 1.5 degrees as small and short as possible. That demands an overshoot of ambition” said UN Secretary-General Antőnio Guterres. ..."
