So many of the funded PhDs I can find in my and adjacent fields while I'm searching are things shoving AI into things. Not only is that the wrong thing to do, but there is NOT a corresponding funding of the many serious things PhD students could be doing for food security, ecology, etc. because higher ed and gov policy people go for this AI cult stuff hook, line, and sinker.

@peplech @cycling_on_rails @HaTetsu My point was that people who aren't in the covered groups tend to be quick to defend "remember the taxpayers are paying for it...they don't want to pay for free rides for those who are not paying into taxes" when talking about visiting children and disabled people...but a lot slower to shift to why it is that there have to be fares for public transit in the first place, especially in the face of climate emergency.
I used "private planes and private yachts" taxation because y'all were on the whole "how do we afford public transit" thing. The discussion of taxation and better regulation of multinational corporations is an even bigger discussion. Including whether corporations should even exist in their current "no one goes to jail for corporate misdeeds" form, in my opinion.
