Tha lack of funding means unless someone is independently wealthy, they're going to have a hard time doing a PhD that does not have AI shoved in there in some inappropriate way (while simultaneously not funding effective non-AI research on urgent problems brought on by #ClimateEmergency).
The wealthy do not care about how society might struggle when there's a gap in well-trained STEM personnel - they know they have enough money to afford research and treatment from those that remain.
