  1. Buying the most efficient retrofit window glass (lowest SHGC possible) for the windows/sliding glass door I replaced last year is paying off big time today.

Current California building code says Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, SHGC, of 0.23 or less required, but you can get much more efficient windows designed for Arizona (SHGC 0.19). That means the amount of heat absorbed when the sun is shining into a window is minimized. It's dramatic. (you can also put heavy curtains and reflective attic insulation, etc. in a window as a temporary measure that accomplished similar).

(the sales guy was "no one orders those windows here, they aren't as clear!" I was "I'm speccing these windows" and he was "okay... are you an engineer?!?!") 🤪

  2. I keep going back to Pamela Swanigan's magnificent 2024 essay "It’s Time To Give Up Hope For A Better Climate & Get Heroic".

Tolkien's Long Defeat, the heroic rearguard action of the Elves of Middle-Earth to keep darkness at bay, has become a major source of inspiration for me as I join my chosen battle lines. We won't win, I know. But we can forestall doom for a time, and protect people and things that are beautiful and worth protecting.

  3. 🥵

    101.6F, 33% humidity, heat index is 106.9F.

(I am indoors, air conditioning is on, so I am fine... but.... yeesh).

(and yes, yes, some future September 9th, the universe willing, I will look at this fondly "look! it was only 106.9F heat index, instead of 134F! Do you remember when we didn't have to jump in the refrigerated survival pods during heatwaves?")

  4. NWS Los Angeles (9/9/26)

"The next two days (Today and Thu) will feature very dangerous and unusual heat. High pressure over AZ will bring 596 dam hgts to Srn CA today and 595 dam hgts Thu. SFC high pressure to the NE will bring 2-3 mb of offshore flow this morning both from the N and E. This one two punch will bring 3 to 6 locally 8 degrees of warming to areas south of Pt Conception and a whopping 10 to 15 degrees north. This will lead to max temps of mid to upper 80s at the beaches, 90s across the rest of the csts and 100 to 108 degree temps for the vlys. The big kicker for this two day event will be the humidity which will be much higher than normal due to the remnants of Hurricane Marine and the much warmer than normal sea sfc temps. This extra humidity will make the temps feel much worse and will lessen the bodies cooling abilities. This humidity as well as the strong inversion will also lead to much warmer than normal overnight lows which will make heat recovery difficult for people without Air Conditioning.

Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect today and Thursday. The added
humidity really make this heat event much more dangerous than previous ones. All residents should limit your outdoor activities during the afternoon, seek air conditioned spaces, and take lots of breaks."

  5. Something that was clear to me decades ago was that if those with power did not listen to climate scientists and others ringing the alarm on climate change, there were going to be A LOT of climate refugees. And that sadly those most affected would be from countries that were not creating as much of the GHGs.

So it is annoying as hell to me that news outlets, when covering immigration policies, when covering xenophobia, when covering current migrants, do not explicitly point out that some of this is due to climate change, more will be due to climate change in future, and the countries that contributed most to climate change are the ones shutting their gates hardest to immigrants.

  6. More than 140 golf clubs in England have breached their water extraction licences in the past five years.

Punitive fines and a threat of closure would be a first step.

  8. Maricopa County, Arizona

629 possible heat deaths on this chart 😬

  9. Hmm, only have up through April, but LA had some kinda heat death spike in 2024. (this of course pales to desert parts of the southwest... i.e. Phoenix, which absolutely is a killer). That said, I am aware of a number of heatwave deaths up here in my county (Ventura)... quite a few compared to normal years, a lot more than expected.

"...Public health officials in Los Angeles County have seen an increase in emergency visits for heat-related illness during the heat wave over the summer months, according to a heat-related illness and mortality dashboard maintained by the county health department...."

  14. Every damned day there are so many news stories where people are upset but also surprised by things that were predicted for decades by climate and other scientists.

Yes, people were failed by their politicians, but many were also in damned denial and surprise, surprise, GHGs are increasing global average temperature, melting polar caps, making sea levels rise, shorelines erode, etc. etc.
