TITLE: Forced Birth Control in Greenland Violated Women's Rights, Experts Find

    URL: socialpsychology.org/client/re

    Source: Al Jazeera

Greenland is establishing a truth and reconciliation commission regarding a forced contraceptive scheme against Indigenous girls and women, after two expert reports failed to agree whether it constituted genocide. From the 1960s to the 1990s, at least 4,000 Greenlandic Inuits—including girls as young as 12—received intrauterine devices or contraceptive injections, often without their consent or knowledge, a joint Danish-Greenlandic inquiry...

  6. The fight isn't over to #ProtectTheSacred!

"#NDNCollective, a Rapid City-based nonprofit that advocates for #IndigenousRights, is among the lawsuit plaintiffs.

" 'From the #LandDefenders who occupied two active drill pads for a week, to fighting in the courts through multiple lawsuits and a temporary restraining order, today’s win is multi-faceted and offers a blueprint for future #LandDefense fights,' NDN said Friday in a press release.

"Future fights include one scheduled for the week of May 18. The state Board of Minerals and Environment is scheduled to conduct a hearing in Hot Springs on a proposal to conduct exploratory drilling for #uranium in the southern #BlackHills.

"That project would be near #CravenCanyon, where the rock walls are carved with Native American petroglyphs believed to be thousands of years old."

  9. Critical minerals collide with #tourism in B.C. resort town.

A #Calgary based mining company called West High Yield Resources wants to extract #magnesium ore from Record Ridge, about seven kilometres outside of town, and ship it overseas.

West High Yield holds mineral claims over 8,972 hectares at the site — an area 4.6 times bigger than the city of Victoria. In October 2025, the #BCgovernment approved the company’s #mining permit.

Several #Rossland residents say they have been confounded by what they see as abnormalities in the siting and permitting of the mine. Many have united under the banner of the non-profit Save Record Ridge Action Society ( #SRRAC ).

At one point, WHY Resources sought to remove up to 200,000 tonnes of ore a year, but later reduced that to 63,500 tonnes per year — below the 70,000-tonne limit that often triggers an environmental assessment.

In a May 2025 letter to the province, the #Ktunaxa Nation Council argued alongside SRRAC that the mine footprint only dropped by 5.7 per cent, despite a 68 per cent cut in proposed production.

The stated lower production capacity “masks and understates its true capacity” and environmental footprint, added the nation, arguing it’s designed to avoid initial regulatory hurdles and be scaled up later.

SRRAC requested that Ottawa carry out an environmental review of the Record Ridge mine project.

A report issued last month from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada rejected that request. It found the mine project did not require federal designation, and that existing laws were enough to manage the potential impacts on fish, migratory birds and Indigenous rights.

  12. #WhiteMesaUte Invite Public to Join #SpiritualWalk to Protest #UraniumMill, Oct. 4, 2025

    by #CensoredNews, September 20, 2025

Excerpt: "The rally and spiritual walk is to protect the White Mesa Ute Community’s health, water, air, land, culture, and sacred sites from the nearby #EnergyFuels uranium mill and show community opposition to the mill operating as an international dumping ground for radioactive waste from North America, Japan, and Europe. All relatives and allies welcome.

"The rally on Saturday, October 4, 2025, 11 a.m. MDT will be followed by a spiritual walk to the Energy Fuels uranium mill, about five miles on relatively flat pavement. Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Limited number of vehicle seats available for elders and those not able to walk the whole way.

"The White Mesa Ute Community Center in White Mesa, Utah, is just south of Blanding, Utah off Highway 191. The community center is on the west side of the highway. Turn west at the gas station
    and go one block south.

"The Ute Mountain Ute Community of White Mesa and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe are concerned about #contamination from the nearby #UraniumMill and desecration of sacred sites.

"The uranium mill, owned by Energy Fuels Resources, is also where uranium ore from controversial #UraniumMines, including #PinyonPlain Mine, near the #GrandCanyon, is sent for processing; #NativeAmerican tribes, including the #HavasupaiTribe, strongly oppose that mine. As far away as #Madagascar, #IndigenousPeople strongly oppose Energy Fuels’ operations. The October 4 protest and walk are sponsored by the #WhiteMesaConcernedCommunity and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe."

  13. Sifting the wheat from the chaff in our technological and social mess is an important challenge. This is why the #OMN approach of leveraging work across communities and utilising multi-tag aggregation is an elegant and powerful solution. It would be useful to look at this from a more #mainstreaming prospective.

Aggregated work across communities of subjects, the first step in the #OMN path involves gathering and organising work created by various communities around specific subjects or interests. Subject-centric hubs, decentralised indexing, curating content based on subjects (e.g., #ClimateChange, #TechEthics). These hubs wouldn’t rely on centralised algorithms, but instead draw from a network of community-curated sources. Community moderation by trusted communities who moderate and curate content within their subject interested. This ensures quality and reduces noise while resisting gatekeeping tendencies of centralised control.
Reputation by contribution by encourage subject-focused communities to reward contributions, promoting collaboration and surfacing valuable work naturally.

Dynamic and live updates, newsfeeds, can be feed by aggregating real-time updates from communities working on the same subjects using open protocols like ActivityPub. This would provide a live pulse of discussions, innovations, and trends across diverse groups and subjects.

Multi-tag aggregation, the next step is to create a system that enables the mash-up of multiple tags to filter and organise the aggregated content dynamically. Advanced multi-tagging allow people to filter aggregated work using combinations of tags, e.g., #ClimateChange + #IndigenousRights + #CommunityProjects.

Visualisation of tag relationships, tag webs, implement visual tools that map relationships between tags, communities, and subjects. People can explore how different concepts connect and navigate the network intuitively. Trend overview, within tag intersections to help people identify emerging areas of focus and overlooked intersections.

Tools for aggregation and mashing, to make this work practically, we need powerful, accessible tools that build on the #OMN ethos. Open aggregators, open-source aggregators that collect data, metadata, and content flows from diverse platforms and formats, such as blogs, Fediverse instances, wikis, and video platforms that can be made compatible with the #openweb, we simply ignore the #dotcons which are to #closedweb to be worth plugging in to these flows, they will wither in the self-sustaining destruction of their own #techshit, sadly taking a part of our communities with them, we do not have the focus to rescue everyone as we push this shift.

Community buy-In and participation, To build the #OMN path in an effective and relevant direction, it must gain support and participation from the communities that create it. This needs: Simple, intuitive interfaces for tagging, curating, and contributing to subject hubs. Guides and incentives to help non-technical people engage with the paths. Decentralised decision-making, with democratic governance paths like the #OGB. Education and outreach, with educational campaigns to teach people how to use multi-tag aggregation and curated subject hubs that work.

Guarding against pitfalls, while the #OMN approach is promising, it’s essential to mitigate potential risks. We need to keep vigilance on balancing noise and redundancy. Centralisation risks, by keeping to decentralised and open paths to avoid reliance on any single platform, database, or organisation. Bias in curation is kept in check by the networks being inherently leaky, people will see other points of view – we do not subscribe to the #blocking inherent in #fashernista safety culture.

What would this look like, the end goal: Collaborative Knowledge Commons. The aim of the #OMN path is to create a living, breathing commons of human knowledge and action. By aggregating community work and enabling meaningful mash-ups through multi-tag aggregation, we create a powerful tool to cut through the noise, enabling better collaboration between communities, richer understanding of complex, intersectional issues, stronger foundations for the native #openweb.

  17. Unfortunately, the #ShundahaiNetwork's website is no longer maintained by the group. #CorbinHarney founded the group years ago. I managed to find it on the #InternetArchive. Here's a snapshot from 2002. I had a link to their website from the now-defunct What? Magazine Online back when I first heard about Shundahai back in 1998/1999.

"Shundahai Network was formed at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site in 1994, by a council of long-term nuclear disarmament activists, at the request of #CorbinHarney, a #WesternShoshone Spiritual Leader. We have evolved into an international network of activists and organizations bridging the gap between the environmental, peace and justice and indigenous land rights communities.

"Shundahai Network opposes all nuclear weapons research, development, testing and production. We actively seek to close down the Nevada Test Site to all nuclear weapons programs except for radioactive contamination containment and cleanup. Shundahai Network also opposes all nuclear waste dumping on indigenous peoples lands. We are fighting to halt the proposed high-level nuclear waste dumps at #YuccaMountain and #SkullValleyReservation. We work to educate about the dangers of #RadioactiveWaste transportation and promote a safe and sane energy policy based on conservation and #renewable resources. To this end, Shundahai Network organizes and participates in nonviolent direct actions, demonstrations, workshops and conferences.

    "Shundahai Network Mission Statement

"Shundahai Network, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the nuclear chain by building alliances with #indigenous communities and #environmental, #peace and #HumanRights movements. We seek to abolish all #NuclearWeapons and an end to #NuclearTesting. We advocate phasing out #NuclearEnergy and ending the transportation and dumping of #NuclearWaste. We promote the principles of #EnvironmentalJustice and strive to insure that indigenous voices are heard in the movement to influence U.S. Nuclear and environmental policies. All of our campaigns and events incorporate the values of community building, education, spiritual ceremonies and nonviolent #DirectAction.

"Our staff and volunteers work on a wide range of community outreach, education and public action campaigns. Through our events and campaigns, Shundahai Network helps train activists in community organizing and the use of nonviolent direct action to generate public awareness and apply political pressure on nuclear and #IndigenousRights issues."

The large group from the #MashcoPiro appeared in recent days near the southeastern village of #MonteSalvado, which belongs to the #Yine people. A smaller group of 17 appeared near a neighboring village.

The Yine, who speak a language related to that of the Mashco Piro, have previously reported that the #UncontactedTribe has been angry about the presence of #loggers on their land, according to the #IndigenousRights group #SurvivalInternational.

“This is irrefutable evidence that many Mashco Piro live in this area, which the government has not only failed to protect, but actually sold off to logging companies,” Alfredo Vargas Pio, president of the local Indigenous rights group #FENAMAD, said in a statement from Survival International.

💚 Following the devastatingly divisive Voice to Parliament last October, so-called Australians (Yes and Sovereign No/Abstaining voters alike) NEED to be advocating for Treaty and Truth Telling NOW.

    🔗 events.humanitix.com/truth-tel

Event brief: "A Truth Telling & Treaty forum In conversation with Senator Lidia Thorpe, Uncle Gary Foley, Uncle Jim Everett and others.

This event aims to provide an opportunity to hear from First Nations Elders and leaders about where to go from here on First Nations Justice.

We will be discussing the importance of Truth Telling as the first step – looking at current developments, and what a national Truth Telling process would contribute. We will also discuss what genuine, inclusive Treaty processes would look like, from the grassroots to National & International levels.

Treaty must be for the people, by the people. It has to come from the ground up, and each of us have a role to play in making it happen."

"Gómez’s fight to preserve the forests had been tough, he’d told the international press. He said his work had been endangered by criminals, including illegal loggers and the cartel-infiltrated avocado trade. 'Gómez was probably hurting the interests of people illegally logging in the area,' Mayte Cardona, a spokeswoman for the State #HumanRights Commission of #Michoacán, told journalists shortly after his disappearance."

  22. Mexico: defender of monarch butterflies found dead two weeks after he vanished

    - Homero Gómez González was found floating in a well
    - Activists say death could be over illegal logging disputes

A #Mexican #environmental #activist who fought to protect the wintering grounds of the monarch #butterfly has been found dead in the western state of Michoacán, two weeks after he disappeared.

#HomeroGómezGonzález, a former logger who managed #ElRosarioButterflyReserve, vanished on 13 January. His body was found floating in a well on Wednesday, reportedly showing signs of torture.

“The motive for his murder remains unknown, but some activists speculated that it could have been related to disputes over illegal #logging.

“Last week, authorities called in 53 police officers from the surrounding municipalities for questioning.

“Gómez González’s death comes as the murder rate continues to surge in a country where environmental defenders, human rights workers and community activists are routinely targeted for their work.

“President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised to halt attacks on environmental defenders, but the killings continue.

“‘This is a very regrettable act, very painful,' López Obrador said at his morning press conference on Thursday. 'It’s part of what makes us apply ourselves more to guarantee peace and tranquility in the country.'

“According to Global Witness 14 defenders were murdered in Mexico in 2018.

“Gómez González grew up in #ElRosario, a hamlet in the hills of western Michoacán, where monarch butterflies winter amid dense forests of fir and pine trees.

“Millions of the butterflies make a 2,000-mile (3,220km) journey each year from Canada to pass the winter in central Mexico’s warmer weather. But the forests and the monarchs are threatened by climate change and the incursion of illegal loggers and #AvocadoFarmers.

“A gentle man with a salt-and-pepper hair and thick mustache, Gómez González was born into a logging family according to a profile in the Washington Post.
“‘We were afraid that if we had to stop logging, it would send us all into poverty,' he told the newspaper.

“But he eventually convinced others to abandon logging and protect butterfly habitats instead, figuring tourism would replace the lost income. The sanctuary is now a #UnescoWorldHeritageSite and federal law outlaws logging in the site.

#GómezGonzález often posted mesmerising videos of fluttering monarchs to social media.

“In one of his last videos, shared on Twitter a day before his disappearance, Homero Gómez González stood amid a cloud of butterflies. 'Come and and see this marvel of nature! [The #butterflies] are lovers of the sun, the souls of the dead,' he said, referring to #IndigenousLegends about the migratory butterflies.

“Speaking to the AP, #HomeroAridjis, an environmentalist and poet who is a longtime defender of the butterfly reserve, said: 'If they can kidnap and kill the people who work for the reserves, who is going to defend the environment in Mexico?’”

"The Federal Court rejected arguments that the Project will cause unnecessary and undue degradation to the local sage grouse population and habitat, groundwater aquifers and air quality; that the BLM [Bureau of Land Management] failed to adequately assess the Project’s impacts on air quality, wildlife and groundwater; that the BLM failed to adequately consider the Project’s impacts to culturally or religiously significant areas; and that BLM acted unreasonably or in bad faith in identifying tribes for consultation before approving the Project."

They are beginning to destroy the land. The legality of this is questionable, but they are doing it anyway. And BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is allowing them to do it.
