#Drumpf admin vowed on Wednesday to pay $765 million to a power project developer #Invenergy to abandon planned #windmill projects off the coastal states of New York, #California and #Maine and convert resources to developing natural gas power plants in five landlocked Midwest states.
Seven U.S. states sued the admin this month over a similar $800 million payment to #TotalEnergies TTEF.PA to cancel an east coast offshore wind project. The state AG's suing the #ExecBranch allege payments are not proper #USA govt process and illegally misuse fund$ reserved for legal settlements when there was no actual #litigation.

…While previous deals had committed companies to investing only in #FossilFuels like natural #gas, #Invenergy said it was also planning to invest in #geothermal #energy projects. Geothermal plants, which can run at all hours & emit few #GreenhouseGas #emissions [shhh, don’t tell #Trump], are one of the few #RenewableEnergy sources that have found favor with the Trump admin.
Trump admin officials indicated that more such agreements could be in the works.

The government will then reimburse Invenergy $765 million, or somewhat less than what the company had paid for the leases under the #Biden admin.
In exchange, #Invenergy said it would put that money toward the development of at least 5 new natural #gas fired #PowerPlants in the #Midwest, as well as in geothermal projects in the Western #US.

Under the agreement #Invenergy will voluntarily surrender 4 leases in federal waters for #WindFarms that would have been located in the New York Bight, off the Central Coast of California & in the Gulf of Maine. All of those projects were in the early stages of development & had little chance of moving forward under the #Trump admin, which has halted all federal permitting for offshore #wind.
