  1. So, Uber asked me if removing UberX (the standard option) would make me sad. They wanted to know if I'd choose a different option or leave the platform entirely.

In all honesty, that would allow only the newer, eco-friendly vehicles to run around, so that's something. The prices aren't any higher, especially if you choose the wait&save option.

The downside, from what I've noticed, is that (all???) EVs have ad displays in the back. Look, I want to do my part and reduce CO₂ emissions, but I absolutely detest ads. Plus, I'm paying for my ride. At least make them free, you know, like those awful mobile games that people play in the bathroom.

  6. An analysis carried out for the Guardian has found that in areas with the fewest sunny days, solar panels could bring annual savings of about £450 a year on the average household electricity bill. In areas with the brightest skies, this figure could climb to more than £600.

Findings provided by the UK solar firm Recharge Renewable.

  7. This is an interesting article. Why? Because it goes beyond the normalized threadbare reporting we are subjected to from main stream media. And because the information imparted by the article is so… *refreshing* ?… due to its structure (the way it is written) and the information it reveals, both of which entice the reader to pay attention while reducing the temptation to *skim* the article — *skim reading* is a pathology thrust upon readers of social media platforms, it is highly infectious and to date there are no remedies (but maybe this article and the type of *journalism* it champions is the antidote).

The article **explains** (wooaah, that’s bold and inovative) that the #TomagoSmelter bail out isn’t, in fact, a run-of-the-mill govt *bail out*.

“…there is every chance that this arrangement will be cost-neutral over the decade, while at the same time turbocharging the energy transition and economic diversification of Australia’s most prominent industrial region.” That is the exiting part.

But there is a dependency and #RioTinto needs to stick to the commitment for a decade at least. “ For its part, Tomago has committed to investing a minimum of $1.1 billion in reducing energy usage and switching to renewables. Not only will closure be avoided, but there will be a value-add to the region.”

    And that #Corporation has a track record : accr.org.au/news/rio-tinto-cli

If it all works out as planned, this public funding/investment (not a bail out as such) will benefit all parties including the #HunterRegions and support the transition to #Renewables energy.

  8. How To Store Renewable Energy

Image credit: Pramote Polyamate via Getty Images Renewable-energy storage is important to help humanity reduce its dependence on fossil fuels such as oil and coal, which produce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that cause climate change. Harnessing the power of the sun with solar panels and utilizing wind power with wind turbines are two common ways to generate renewable energy. But the sun isn't always shining and the wind isn't always blowing when we want electricity, and […]

  9. We Are Not Mining with Renewable Energy

…and when we do, shit's going to get real

There are no “renewables” without mining, an unsustainable practice turbocharged by the burning of fossil fuels. Yet, advocates of green technologies still believe that we could “somehow” electrify the recovery of critical minerals, and continue with civilization in a “business as usual but greener” manner. In reality, this could not be further from the truth.

  10. Could this simple idea revolutionise #Scottish #energy industry?

The idea is to co-locate specially designed “Tide-Torrent” #turbines on the #sea floor alongside #offshore #wind farms.

Water moving past wind turbine foundations gains speed, McAnally said, suggesting smaller #tidal generators could be positioned to capture that extra energy.

  13. Someone finally built the car that charges itself.

Just talked to Robert Hoevers, CEO of Squad Mobility, about their solar-powered city car. Panel on the roof. Battery underneath. Park it in the sun, drive it around town—it just keeps charging.

Live somewhere sunny? You literally never plug in. The average person drives 12km a day for errands. This does 150km max range. The math works.

5,300 pre-orders. €1.5M in European funding. Production starts next year.
    Street legal. Crash tested.
Robert put it simply: "It's like a second car."

Exactly. Not for highway commutes but perfect for the grocery run, city trip, the school drop-off and all those short trips where driving a massive polluting vehicle makes zero sense.

Sometimes the obvious solution just needed someone to build it.

Naja... bisschen genauer ist es, sich am schwankenden #Strompreis zu orientieren, aus dem wir ersatzweise den voraussichtlichen Anteil Erneuerbarer Energien im Stromnetz ableiten. 17. "The research was led by [student] Divya Tyagi of Penn State’s Department of #Aerospace #Engineering. Her work focuses on how #turbines exchange momentum with the air and how that shows up in power and structural loading. [.] the method delivers closed forms for total thrust and total flapwise bending on the blades. That is valuable because it lets designers compare power gains against structural costs without guessing."

  18. Weekly output: Android and Wear OS updates, Gmail’s Manage Subscriptions tool, Grok coming to Teslas, clean-energy rebates and tax credits

This week saw the return of one of Washington’s most treasured rites of summer: the free outdoor concerts at Fort Reno Park in Tenleytown. Unfortunately, I let myself get spooked by the weather forecast for Monday’s show and then had a schedule conflict for Thursday’s show–and now I see that the forecast calls for rain tomorrow evening.

7/9/2025: Google Unpacks Another Round of AI Features, Starting With Gemini On Wear OS, PCMag

SamsI contributed a tiny bit of PCMag’s coverage of Samsung’s latest Unpacked product-announcement event with this writeup of some new features Google announced for some of Samsung’s new hardware.

7/9/2025: Gmail’s New ‘Manage Subscriptions’ Feature Is Here, But It Doesn’t Go Far Enough, PCMag

If I had written about this new Gmail feature only from Google’s announcement of it, this might have been a much more positive piece. But what they rolled out doesn’t come close to helping Gmail users cope with their overflowing inboxes.

Writing this short post took longer than I expected because it represented my belated introduction to the content-embedding feature in PCMag’s CMS.

7/11/2025: Interested in Clean-Energy Tax Credits? The Clock Is Ticking Thanks to Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, PCMag

Researching this piece felt like doing my taxes, with the added annoyance factor of my knowing that we were never eligible for some of the Inflation Reduction Act’s incentives anyway.
