Large parts of New England are facing #WaterRestrictions amid rare #drought conditions
Ayesha Rascoe, October 5, 2025
"RASCOE: When you think of droughts, the first place that comes to mind probably isn't New England, but a dry summer has led to low water levels in large parts of Massachusetts. Most of the state is under significant drought conditions, and that means water restrictions and an increased risk of brush fires. To talk about this and when it may end, we turn to Ken Mahan. He's the lead meteorologist at The Boston Globe. Welcome to the program.
KEN MAHAN: Thanks for having me, Ayesha.
RASCOE: How bad are these drought conditions throughout the state right now?
MAHAN: So the entire state as a whole is running what we call abnormally dry, which means that we've seen a prolonged period of precipitation reaching substantially below average. The Capes specifically are in a level of severe and moderate drought, and along Route 2 in northern Massachusetts is in a moderate drought as well, all stemming from the beginning of summer after a rather wet spring. But yes, this is becoming more common, and unfortunately, we've seen back to back and now back summers where we've seen less than average precipitation across the state.
RASCOE: Well, can I ask you - you said that it's becoming more common. We always have to ask, like, is this climate change?
MAHAN: Yeah, unfortunately, a big piece of it is climate change. When you do have a warming atmosphere and warming sea surface temperatures, then that is going to naturally change the way the atmosphere behaves. You think of the jet stream. The jet stream is the highway in which weather patterns traverse across the country. And over the last few summers, we've seen that jet stream become a little bit more to the north or diving down to the south of New England, which simply redirects storms away.
RASCOE: So what you're saying, just in layman's terms, is that the atmosphere conditions are changing, and so the jet streams are not bringing the storms and the water precipitation that they usually would to Massachusetts. They're sending them elsewhere.
MAHAN: That's absolutely correct. And also, with more heat in the atmosphere, it could hold more water vapor. And unfortunately, during the summer when we need precipitation the most, the storms that do come through are much weaker.
RASCOE: So can you give us a sense of how unusual it is for it to be this dry right now?
MAHAN: Well, you think of Massachusetts - I was looking at the data. This summer alone, Massachusetts saw anywhere between 2 to 7 inches of rain deficit from June 1. That has brought down 70% of stream flows and groundwater storages statewide, so that is a pretty significant drop. Northern New England as a whole - they saw the driest summer on record dating back nearly 130 years, with rainfall deficits over the summer reaching a foot, which is...
RASCOE: Oh.
MAHAN: ...Pretty astonishing."

Study Directly Links Emissions from #FossilFuel Producers to Devastating #Heatwaves
The findings could have legal implications for oil, gas, and cement producers, experts said.
By Ellyn Lapointe Published September 11, 2025
"A new study directly links hundreds of major heatwaves since 2000 to the emissions from fossil fuel and cement producers. Among its fundings, the researchers conclude that as many as a quarter of all heatwaves since the start of this century would have been 'virtually impossible' without emissions from any of the world’s 14 largest fossil fuel and #cement producers.
"The study, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, shows that greenhouse gas emissions from 180 of the world’s biggest cement, oil, and gas producers have significantly contributed to climate change over the last two decades.
"They linked the emissions to 213 heatwaves, finding the pollution made the #ExtremeHeat more likely and intense. Of those 213 events, 53 were made 10,000 times more likely as a result of the emissions, according to the researchers."

International Survey Shows 81% Back Forcing #BigOil to Pay for #Climate Destruction
"People are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of #FossilFuel giants all over the #storms, #floods, #droughts, and #wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said the head of one green group.
by Eloise Goldsmith, Jun 19, 2025
"Large majorities of people around the world support both taxing #oil, #gas, and #coal companies for the #EnvironmentalDamage made worse by fossil fuels and using higher taxes on #polluters to support communities most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis, according to the results of an international survey released Thursday.
"The study, which was jointly commissioned by #Greenpeace International and #Oxfam International, surveyed roughly 1,200 people in each of these 13 countries: #Brazil, #Canada, #France, #Germany, #India, #Italy, #Kenya, #Mexico, #Philippines, #SouthAfrica, #Spain, #UnitedKingdom, and the #UnitedStates. The research was conducted by the data company Dynata, and field work was done between May 9-28, 2025. Greenpeace noted that, taken together, the countries represent close to 50% of the globe's population.
"The results of the survey showed a whopping 81% of those surveyed would support taxes fossil fuel companies to pay for damages wrought by 'fossil-fuel driven climate disasters.'
"These survey results send a clear message: people are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of fossil fuel giants all over the storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said #MadsChristensen, the executive director of #GreenpeaceInternational.
" 'It's only fair that those who caused the crisis should pay for the damage, not those suffering from it,' he added.

Trump taps #OilIndustry insider to oversee drilling on #PublicLands
#BureauOfLandManagement nominee #KathleenSgamma heads a #FossilFuel industry trade group that sued the Biden administration over a landmark #conservation rule.
By Maxine Joselow
"President Donald #Trump has nominated oil and gas advocate #KathleenSgamma to lead the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management, the agency tasked with managing millions of acres of public lands and waters for the benefit of all Americans.
"The nomination of Sgamma, who heads a Denver-based oil and gas industry trade group called the #WesternEnergyAlliance, heralds a seismic shift in the management of roughly 245 million acres of public property — about one-tenth of the nation’s land mass.
"If confirmed by the Senate, she would be a key architect of Trump’s #DrillBabyDrill agenda alongside Interior Secretary and '#EnergyCzar' #DougBurgum. An MIT graduate who previously worked in consulting, she has advocated for the BLM to prioritize oil and gas drilling, #HardrockMining and #livestock grazing on public lands nationwide.
"A spokesman for Sgamma did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
"During his first term, Trump tapped conservative lawyer William Perry Pendley to lead the BLM on an acting basis. But Trump never nominated Pendley, a vocal advocate of selling off public lands, to helm the agency on a permanent basis, prompting a rebuke from a federal judge.
"President Joe Biden in 2021 chose Tracy Stone-Manning, a prominent Montana-based #environmentalist, to lead the BLM. Earlier in her career, Stone-Manning worked on conservation policy at the #NationalWildlifeFederation and led Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality.
"Under Biden, the BLM finalized a landmark rule that sought to put conservation, #recreation and #RenewableEnergy development on equal footing with #ResourceExtraction on public lands. Sgamma’s Western Energy Alliance filed a lawsuit challenging that rule, which the Trump administration is expected to overturn.
"In an interview with The Washington Post in April, Sgamma criticized the regulation for allowing ranchers, renewable-energy developers and other interests to lease federal lands for the purpose of #conservation and #HabitatRestoration.
"We have no choice but to litigate,' she said. 'These conservation leases seem to be designed to preclude energy development on federal lands.'
#Environmentalists criticized #Sgamma’s nomination.
"'This choice shows that the new administration will leave no favor ungranted for the oil and gas industry and the wealthy #FossilFuel #executives who funded Trump’s campaign,' #AlanZibel, oil and gas research director with the liberal advocacy group #PublicCitizen, said in an email.
"#JeffEshelman, president and #CEO of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, which represents small oil producers, praised Sgamma’s selection while critiquing the Biden administration."

"#JeffEshelman, president and #CEO of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, which represents small oil producers, praised Sgamma’s selection while critiquing the Biden administration."

It's NOT a wonderful life when #ClimateChange is involved!
Oscar-Winning Director #FrankCapra Made an Educational Science Film Warning of Climate Change in 1958
in Education, Environment, Film, Science | July 15th, 2024
"Shown on American TV and later in US classrooms, The Unchained Goddess explains what weather is, and how weather works. And, really quite presciently, it talks about the risk of man-made climate change … in 1958. One of the narrators declares:
"Even now, man may be unwittingly changing the world’s climate through the waste products of its civilization. Due to our releases in #factories and #automobiles every year of more than six billion tons of #CarbonDioxide, which helps the air absorb heat from the sun, our atmosphere may be getting warmer.
"And is that bad, the question gets asked?:
'Well, it’s been calculated a few degrees rise in the Earth’s temperature would melt the polar ice caps. And if this happens, an inland sea would fill a good portion of the Mississippi valley. Tourists in glass bottom boats would be viewing the drowned towers of Miami through 150 feet of tropical water. For in weather, we’re not only dealing with forces of a far greater variety than even the atomic physicist encounters, but with life itself.'"

Supreme Court lets #Hawaii sue #OilCompanies over #ClimateChange effects
#SCOTUS won't answer 'recurring question of extraordinary importance' to #BigOil.
by Ashley Belanger – Jan 13, 2025
"On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to decide whether to block lawsuits that Honolulu filed to seek billions in damages from oil and gas companies over allegedly deceptive marketing campaigns that hid the effects of climate change.
"Now those lawsuits can proceed, surely frustrating the fossil fuel industry, which felt that SCOTUS should have weighed in on this key 'recurring question of extraordinary importance to the energy industry' raised in lawsuits seeking similarly high damages in several states, CBS News reported.
"Defendants #Sunoco and #Shell, along with 15 other energy companies, had asked the court to intervene and stop the Hawaii lawsuits from proceeding. They had hoped to move the cases out of Hawaii state courts by arguing that interstate pollution is governed by federal law and the Clean Air Act.
"The oil and gas companies continue to argue that greenhouse gas emissions 'flow from billions of daily choices, over more than a century, by governments, companies, and individuals about what types of fuels to use, and how to use them.' Because of this, the companies believe Honolulu was wrong to demand damages based on the "cumulative effect of worldwide emissions leading to global climate change."

Their fortunes are the result of poisoning you, me, our children and grandchildren, every other living thing on Earth, and destroying the temperature stability of our atmosphere. This week it's horrifying to look out and see the world they are creating for the rest of us.
by #ThomHartmann, Jan 11, 2025
"#PublicCitizen would like you to know that there are killers among us.
"They wear $2,000 suits and travel in #PrivateJets, unbothered by the TSA or the teeming masses. Their children attend the finest universities in the world, and they vacation on private islands and yachts. Many 'earn' more in a day than most Americans take home in a year; their positions ensure their heirs will never have to work a day in their lives.
"Their fortunes are the result of poisoning you, me, our children and grandchildren, every other living thing on Earth, and destroying the temperature stability of our atmosphere. This week they’re arguably responsible, in part, for billions of dollars in losses, numerous deaths, and thousands of shattered lives in Southern California."

#Protesting the #FossilFuelIndustry and their political allies can help fix the narrative, and turn disasters into opportunities for #ClimateAction
by Margaret Klein Salamon, January 12, 2025
"Who is to blame for the #LosAngelesFires? For the destruction of #Asheville? The devastation of #Acapulco? If you listen to the mainstream media, you would get the impression that no one is truly responsible. These are framed as tragic but random events– acts of nature without clear cause or accountability. Even if articles do mention climate change, which they tend to bury toward the end, they won’t tell you the people and companies who caused these disasters in order to enrich themselves. And if you listen to right-wingers, you will get the mistaken impression that DEI, arson, and the Democratic Party caused these disasters.
"But here’s the truth: These mega-disasters are caused by the climate emergency, which has been caused by fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry has raked in obscene #profits for decades, while knowingly bringing down apocalypse onto the rest of us.
"We have the power to change the narrative. Imagine this: As fires rage through the city, a group of climate activists non-violently occupy the California State House in Sacramento. Or LA City Hall. Or Marathon Oil’s refinery in Los Angeles County. They would demand that fossil fuel companies pay for the damage they’re causing, and face criminal prosecution for the harm that they have inflicted.
Such a protest would be covered on front pages across the globe, shifting the narrative from passive victimhood to active accountability. This is an opportunity that the climate movement has yet to fully seize."The climate emergency is accelerating, and so is the frequency and scale of disasters. When these disasters occur, the eyes of the country and sometimes the world focus on the crisis and its fallout. This should be a tremendous learning opportunity for the public about the dangers of the climate emergency, but the media obscures the true cause of these events. While truthful headlines would report along the lines of, “The Climate Emergency Strikes Again,” the media continues to largely report these disasters as anomalous weather events.
"Activists have a unique role to play in these moments. By connecting fossil fuels to the damage we’re seeing — floods, fires, hurricanes — they can elevate the conversation and force the public to reckon with the reality of the climate emergency. Activists can also call for proactive policies: investments in renewable energy, phasing out fossil fuels, and sustainable rebuilding efforts. The “Make Polluters Pay” demand, which New York State just passed after facing pressure from the New York climate movement, offers a compelling framework for justice in the wake of climate disasters. With millions or even billions of dollars in damage, justice demands that the culprits — fossil fuel companies who have knowingly warmed the atmosphere for decades — foot the bill.
"Disasters are opportunities to shape long-term policy change. Disasters create a unique moment when the public and politicians are more open to new ideas and transformative policy changes. Naomi Klein argued for the unique political opportunities that disasters open up in her 2007 book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Activists can use this moment to demand not only immediate relief but also policies that challenge the fossil fuel industry’s grip on power.
"Climate Emergency Fund is dedicated to supporting the nonviolent disruptive activists who are pushing these important conversations forward, through raising money and making grants. We saw an example of how climate protest can determine the narrative around climate disaster by accident — we supported a protest of Burning Man. The protest wasn’t terribly successful until Burning Man flooded and became a mud pit. Stories about the disaster, which were quite widespread, harkened back to or were even framed around the protest. This made the coverage more climate-focused and more politically activating.
"In moments of crisis, we must demand that climate change be treated not just as an afterthought, but as the root cause of the disaster. It’s time to stop focusing exclusively on short-term relief and rebuilding the status-quo and start building towards a fossil-free, climate-resilient future.
"So when disaster strikes — as it will more and more in the coming years, first, make sure you and your loved ones are safe. Second, see if there is anyone in your immediate vicinity who needs your help. And third, join, or plan, a protest that shifts the narrative. Let’s make it clear: These are not random catastrophes — they are the consequences of the fossil-fueled climate emergency. And we can and must hold the culprits accountable."

Commentary: #Fires, #Hurricanes, #ExtremeWeather: The Media Misses the #ClimateLink
Personally, I think this winter storm should be named "Winter Storm #TonyBlair" -- considering how cosy Blair was with #BigOil!
What to Know About #WinterStormBlair—And Who Will Be Impacted
By Jeffrey Kluger, January 3, 2025
"According to Accuweather, the cold air from the far north will arrive in pulses, with repeated blasts keeping much of the country below average temperatures. The Midwest and mid-Atlantic states are projected to be from 12°F to 25°F below historical averages throughout at least portions of the next two weeks. All five Gulf coast states—Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida—may see snow and ice. A region extending 1,000 miles from western Nebraska to West Virginia could see up to three to six inches of snow, or 'enough to shovel or plow,' says Accuweather. And the more snow that falls, the colder it will get, as the planet’s albedo—or reflectivity—increases, meaning that incoming sunlight bounces from the white ground back into space rather than being absorbed by darker surfaces and increasing warming."

When I wrote "conscious," I meant that the intellectual capabilities were sufficient.
Also: #BigOilKnew for decades but has been trying to mislead the public with PR campaigns:

It really is the insatiable greed of certain individuals that is destroying the basis of the current global biosphere.

#Maine Sues Major #OilCompanies Over ‘Ongoing Deception’ About #ClimateChange
The lawsuit follows similar suits by eight other states and the District of Columbia against major oil companies, all alleging complicity in climate change. Those states are New Jersey, California, Delaware, Minnesota, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island
Story by Nina Golgowski
November 27, 2024"The state of Maine has filed a lawsuit against five major oil companies and their top lobbying group, accusing them of carrying out a decades-long disinformation campaign about climate change and their contribution to it in order to maximize profits.
"Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, in his lawsuit filed Tuesday in state court, accuses Exxon Mobil, Shell, Chevron, BP, Sunoco and the American Petroleum Institute of withholding internal knowledge about fossil fuels’ catastrophic effects all while spinning public doubt.
"'For over half a century, these companies chose to fuel profits instead of following their science to prevent what are now likely irreversible, catastrophic climate effects,' said Frey in a statement. 'In so doing, they burdened the State and our citizens with the consequences of their greed and deception.'"

@Snoro "fix the broken homeowners insurance markets" is not really the issue... #ClimateBreakdown will, as predicted, make vast tracts of land uninhabitable. While we can pretend it's not happening or that we actually can defend #Florida or a better insurance system "will fix it", it's just a matter of when people will have to move.
Unfortunately, we squandered decades to do something meaningful about it and now it's going to simply get worse each year, while we still have to do all these things we did not want to do then just quicker ... We'll find out in less than 20 days, if the world has any chance left to avoid widespread #societalcollapse. #WeHadItAll #BigOilKnew #billionairesfundfascism -

what's even more disgusting and infuriating about everything that you've written is that these #pimps from #bigoil use their ginormous profits to demonize scientists. they go after people who protest and call us terrorists. when they're the ones causing the terror!
That's why they should receive the bill for billions of dollars of damage that these storms cause! where is senator Elizabeth Warren when you need her? she needs to be writing legislation that takes those profits and pays for the destruction.
