International Survey Shows 81% Back Forcing #BigOil to Pay for #Climate Destruction
"People are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of #FossilFuel giants all over the #storms, #floods, #droughts, and #wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said the head of one green group.
by Eloise Goldsmith, Jun 19, 2025
"Large majorities of people around the world support both taxing #oil, #gas, and #coal companies for the #EnvironmentalDamage made worse by fossil fuels and using higher taxes on #polluters to support communities most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis, according to the results of an international survey released Thursday.
"The study, which was jointly commissioned by #Greenpeace International and #Oxfam International, surveyed roughly 1,200 people in each of these 13 countries: #Brazil, #Canada, #France, #Germany, #India, #Italy, #Kenya, #Mexico, #Philippines, #SouthAfrica, #Spain, #UnitedKingdom, and the #UnitedStates. The research was conducted by the data company Dynata, and field work was done between May 9-28, 2025. Greenpeace noted that, taken together, the countries represent close to 50% of the globe's population.
"The results of the survey showed a whopping 81% of those surveyed would support taxes fossil fuel companies to pay for damages wrought by 'fossil-fuel driven climate disasters.'
"These survey results send a clear message: people are no longer buying the lies. They see the fingerprints of fossil fuel giants all over the storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires devastating their lives, and they want accountability," said #MadsChristensen, the executive director of #GreenpeaceInternational.
" 'It's only fair that those who caused the crisis should pay for the damage, not those suffering from it,' he added.

#ClarenceThomas Secretly Participated in #KochBrothers Network Donor Events
by Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott and Alex Mierjeski
Sept. 22, 2023, 5 a.m. EDTExcerpt: "Thomas has attended at least two Koch donor summits, putting him in the extraordinary position of having helped a political network that has brought multiple cases before the Supreme Court.
" 'In the 15 years since, the Koch network has left a deep imprint on American society. Its advocacy is credited with helping stamp out Republican Party support for combating #ClimateChange, once an issue that drew bipartisan concern. The “full weight of the network” was thrown behind passing the 2017 #TrumpTaxCut, securing a windfall for the Kochs and their donors. And the upcoming Supreme Court term could bring the network a victory it has pursued for years: overturning a major legal precedent known as #Chevron.
"While most Americans aren’t familiar with the 1984 case Chevron v. #NRDC, it’s one of the Supreme Court’s most-cited decisions. Legal scholars sometimes mention it in the same breath as Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade. In essence, Chevron is about government agencies’ ability to issue regulations. After a law is enacted, it’s generally up to agencies across the government to make detailed rules putting it into effect. The Chevron decision said courts should be hesitant to second-guess the agencies’ determinations. In the years that followed, judges cited Chevron in upholding rules that protect endangered species, speed up the approval process for new cellphone towers and grant benefits to coal miners suffering from black lung.
"The Koch network has challenged Chevron in the courts and its lobbyists have pushed Congress to pass a law nullifying the decision. It has also provided millions of dollars in grants to law professors making the case to overturn it.
"The network’s position has become increasingly popular in recent years. Once broadly supported by academics and judges on the right, Chevron is now anathema to many in the conservative legal movement. And there’s no more prominent convert than Thomas.
"In 2005, Thomas wrote the majority opinion in a case that expanded Chevron’s protections for government agencies. Ten years later, he was openly questioning the doctrine. Then in 2020, Thomas renounced his own earlier decision, writing that he’d determined the doctrine is unconstitutional after all — a rare reversal for a justice with a reputation for being unmovable in his views.
"By last year, Koch network strategists sensed that victory could be at hand. During an internal briefing for network staff, Jorge Lima, a senior vice president at Americans for Prosperity, said the Supreme Court seemed primed to radically change its approach to the issue. The network was trying to find cases that could bring about major changes in the law, according to a video of the meeting obtained by the watchdog group Documented. “We’re doubling down on this strategy,” Lima told the crowd.
"Several months later, the Supreme Court announced it would take up a case, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, in which Koch network staff attorneys represent the plaintiffs. If Thomas and his colleagues side with them this coming term, Chevron will be overturned once and for all."

#US #SupremeCourt’s New Docket Spells Trouble for #PublicHealth and #Environmental Protections
You may recall that most recently, the Court overturned a 40-year precedent known as the #ChevronDoctrine, which gave deference to federal agency efforts and expertise in issuing rules integral to public health, food safety, and climate change. And now, the justices have three new environmental cases on their upcoming docket, so hold on to your hats.

#SupremeCourt Swamped With #EmergencyAppeals, Led by Challenges to #EPA
Away from its main docket, conservative-led court has been willing to intervene in cases early, seeing grave danger when lower #court permits government to implement regulations that industry sees as too burdensome. Because most rules won’t take effect for years, critics question need for high-court intervention so soon.

Oil and gas supermajors recorded big profits in 2023
By Nancy Vu
February 2, 2024"Three of the largest oil and gas producers this week reported strong combined profits of $85.6 billion in 2023.
On Friday, #Exxon Mobil reported $36 billion in profit for the year, supported by further oil and gas production. #Chevron outlined profits of $21.4 billion — the second-largest profits in a decade for both. #Shell on Thursday, reported adjusted earnings of $28.25 billion for the year, down significantly from 2022 but also the second-largest in a decade."'In 2023, we returned more cash to shareholders and produced more oil and natural gas than any year in the company’s history,' said Mike Wirth, Chevron’s chairman and chief executive officer.
"For Exxon and Chevron, the resilient profits were partly driven by strong growth in oil and gas production in the United States. The companies’ renewed focus on domestic #FossilFuel production has spurred backlash from #environmentalist activists.
"The decrease in profits in 2023 reflects that oil prices have weakened since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, some of the figures beat estimates from Wall Street. Exxon and Chevron were able to report higher than expected earnings per share during the fourth quarter but fell short of expected revenue. Shell was able to report higher than anticipated earnings for the final quarter and net income for the full year.
"Exxon was able to return $32.4 billion to shareholders last year, Chevron $26.3 billion, and Shell returned $23 billion to shareholders.

#USAirForce avoids #PFAS water cleanup, citing #SupremeCourt’s #Chevron ruling
#EPA says Tucson’s drinking water is contaminated but air force claims agency lacks authority to order cleanup
by Tom Perkins
Mon 12 Aug 2024"The US air force is refusing to comply with an order to clean drinking water it polluted in Tucson, Arizona, claiming federal regulators lack authority after the conservative-dominated US supreme court overturned the 'Chevron doctrine'. Air force bases contaminated the water with toxic PFAS '#ForeverChemicals' and other dangerous compounds.
"Though former US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) officials and legal experts who reviewed the air force’s claim say the Chevron doctrine ruling probably would not apply to the order, the military’s claim that it would represents an early indication of how #polluters will wield the controversial court decision to evade responsibility."

It's kind of worse than this, though, right? When have the US armed forces ever fussed about the cost of anything? They usually just pass costs through to taxpayers. Strange that this would be the one place where they say "oh, THIS way of protecting citizens is too expensive".
They are among the very places in government that, unlike the Post Office and others, have not been fussed at for failure to be a proper profit&loss center told that if they don't break even, they have to be canceled as bankrupting us. And, ironically, it wouldn't be hard to make the case that they, more than any other government agency, ARE bankrupting us.
Moreover, a decent case can be made that doing environmental cleanup saves health care costs, so is not even a net cost.
But my point is this: I don't think this is accidental. Someone picked this fight in order for someone to make as much of an ideological point as was being made by SCOTUS in the ruling that unraveled the Chevron doctrine, perhaps testing its reach, or giving SCOTUS a chance to broaden the reach.

So the psycho #supremeCourt threw out the executive branch as enactor of laws with #LoperBright when they destroyed the #ChevronDoctrine
Here's a long article about places that the shipping industry will now start grinding bone against bone in the court system without that executive cartilage https://gard.no/articles/us-supreme-courts-decision-in-loper-bright-a-sea-change-for-us-maritime/
Like: the #jonesAct requires ships that go from one USA port to another be USA owned and USA built. How much foreign repair and foreign components makes a ship foreign? What percentage of what ownership structure makes a ship foreign-owned? There were answers for that once

And that’s just one example. This is going to affect air and water quality and just about every area of our lives in a more negative way than big media or Democrats that have time to go on cable TV can apparently pay attention to.
And it’s brought to us by Trump appointing 1/3 of our federal judiciary.
Please pay attention to what’s important. #ElectDemocrats #ChevronDoctrine #SCOTUS

It is perplexing to be sure. I think about it differently, but I don't know that my way of thinking is correct.
I see two parties: the GOP is more competent at getting elected and forcing a legislative agenda, but consistently their agendas to go in the wrong direction, more evil. The Dems seem less competent that these things, but more well meaning, with agendas that seem to amble a bit but head much better in the right direction. Sometimes I wish the Dems could learn some things from the GOP.
But then sometimes I wonder if their sometimes incompetence or amateurishness is not what keeps them more moral. Maybe it's related to the Lord Acton quote "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely".
Democracy is meant to be inefficient so that it can be deliberative and can have time to engage the population. For most things and most times this may be proper. In times of crisis, which we're experiencing several of, it's a less good tool... ("except for all the others")
For just one of several possible examples, we're moving too slowly on climate. That may be an artifact of democracy. Autocracy might work better for things like that, but not the autocracy that Trump is offering. Even benevolent dictatorships melt down into malevolent ones, and he's offering to skip the benevolent part. Democracies are crappy tools, but at least they have checks and balances.
Well, they DID have checks and balances until SCOTUS was captured. Now I have fewer. Fixing that it's one of those things that the Dems are moving too slowly on. The GOP would move more quickly, but not in the right direction.
It is perhaps the number of crises we have that make people want to reach for autocracy, just install somebody who promises to fix things. Maybe that's what makes Trump appealing to some. But it's easier to promise fixes not to be them. And it's a temptation to be resisted, in spite of its appeal.
One of the things democracy is good at is distributing power. Sadly, it also distributes responsibility, and people don't always see when they are part of the problem. They blame shortcomings and outright trouble on process, but sometimes they ARE that process.
People crave efficiency, but they don't see that the large part of democracy's immune system is the distribution of power, its inefficiency in other words. The temptation is to criticize government for inefficiency, replacing nothing efficiencies with efficiencies, centralizing power. But that creates single points of vulnerability to capture, but from within and without.
SCOTUS power grabs are especially concerning here, as well that's the same excitement about a unitary executive theory. The undoing of the Chevron doctrine grabs power and reduces domain expertise, but also has the effect of centralizing decisions, which is an elimination of another check on power of government. A strange and sad choice by people who have claimed to have an ideology that opposes government power. They see the various agencies as big power, rather than as distributed power, and so they see it as an enemy instead of a friend.
I hope with this ramble that I'm leaving you with a kind of 'yin and yang' feel, that there are no perfect solutions. This is where the quote about eternal vigilance being the price of freedom goes. And this is especially a time for vigilance, because freedom is feeling especially fragile, and our democracy's immune system is seriously compromised.

"On Wednesday the Consumer #Financial Protection Bureau announced a proposed rule for bank overdraft #fees at #banks that have more than $10 bil. in assets.
While the average overdraft is $26.61, some banks charge as much as $39 per #overdraft. The #CFPB estimates that in the past 20 years, banks have collected more than $280 billion in #overdraftfees. (One bank’s chief executive officer named his boat 'Overdraft.')"

Meanwhile, a second case could give the federal courts—and, by extension, the Supreme Court—far greater influence over how agencies draft and revise new regulations.
Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo involves a challenge to a fishery-management rule for Atlantic herring.
The rule required fishing boats to host observers at the industry’s expense to monitor the herring population. While the observers aren’t unusual, Loper Bright challenged the legality of requiring the industry to pay for them.
The lower courts dismissed the company’s challenge by invoking the Chevron doctrine. That doctrine, which dates back to a 1984 case involving the oil company, instructs courts to defer to an agency’s interpretation of a statute if it is based on a “permissible construction” of that statute.
If the statute explicitly says an agency can do something or can’t do something, then the answer is fairly clear. If a statute is “silent or ambiguous” on something, then the agency gets some leeway to act.
The Chevron doctrine is a central feature of modern administrative law. Its defenders have justified it as a necessary act of judicial humility: 👉 If there are disputes about an agency’s power to do something, the Chevron doctrine means they will be resolved by the democratic process, through Congress’s power to write and amend statutes and a president’s power to order the agency to do something different.
Among the more notable voices in favor of this approach was Justice Antonin Scalia, who previously described Chevron as a preferable alternative to judicial adventurism.#LoperBright #ChevronDoctrine
