Watching Two Areas In The Tropics
The Atlantic basin is becoming a little more active, with two areas of interest being monitored for possible tropical development. Neither system poses an immediate threat to the Gulf Coast, but both are worth watching to see if we will have our fourth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
AL95: Short-Lived Development Possible Near Bermuda
An area of low pressure located a couple hundred miles east of Bermuda is moving northward at around 15 to 20 mph. Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with the system is showing some signs of organization, although the overall circulation remains broad and elongated.
There is a 50% chance of tropical development through the next 48 hours, with the same 50% chance through seven days. If development occurs, the system could briefly become a tropical depression or tropical storm as early as Tuesday.
However, AL95 is not expected to have much time to develop. The system will move over cooler waters and into increasingly unfavorable environmental conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday, which should limit its chances of becoming a stronger or longer-lived tropical system.
AL96: Watching the Eastern Atlantic
Farther east, a tropical wave and associated area of low pressure are located a few hundred miles southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands. The disturbance is currently producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
AL96 is moving westward to west-northwestward at roughly 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic. Environmental conditions could become more favorable enough for gradual organization over the next several days.
The National Hurricane Center gives AL96 a 40% chance of development through 48 hours and a 60% chance through seven days. The system could become a tropical depression during the next few days, although conditions are expected to become less favorable by the weekend.
